Homework #1. DUE: [Date]
¿Qué tal los estudios?
TASK #1: Your Spanish friend Rosa emails you about her subject choices next year.
3
Homework #2. DUE: [Date]
Mi nuevo insti
TASK #1: Read both extracts once, without stopping for unfamiliar words, sounding
out difficult words in your head without vocalising them.
Josefina R. Aldecoa was a Spanish writer and teacher who was born in 1926 and died in 2011.
She wrote as part of a literary movement that aimed to weaken the censorship of the Franco
dictatorship. The extract below is from the book Historia de una maestra, written in 1990, which
tells the story of Gabriela, a young teacher, who goes to work in different villages in Spain in
1923, and the challenges she faces. She will move to Equatorial Guinea, a country in central
Africa and a Spanish colony at that time. The extract describes how she taught the children in her
new school there.
Ningún niño sabía español suficiente para entender la explicación. Yo dibujaba en la pizarra las cosas con sus nombres e intentaba que ellos reconocieran las palabras cuando borraba los dibujos. Una pizarra gris y rota, apoyada en el suelo, era la única ayuda.
Más tarde, de mi caja salieron libros, cuadernos, lápices y mapas. Al ver los objetos los alumnos mostraban precaución. Luego se acercaban y tocaban las nuevas cosas para demostrar su inocencia.

TASK #2: Skim both extracts again and highlight all the words related
to a classroom that you can find.
TASK #3: Write the Spanish translations of the words below.
1 Spanish ________________________________
2 Blackboard _____________________________
3 Words _________________________________
4 Drawings _______________________________
5 Books _________________________________
6 Exercise books __________________________
7 Pencils ________________________________
8 Maps _________________________________
9 Students _______________________________
Ningún is a negative word, which means ‘no’/‘not one’.
Remember, ‘skimming’ an extract is to read it quickly to get an overall idea without stopping at difficult words.
4
TASK #4: Underline all the verbs in the extract and then match them to the following
English translations. The verbs appear in this order.
1 (they) knew ___________________________
2 to understand _________________________
3 I drew _______________________________
4 I tried _______________________________
5 they recognised _______________________
6 I rubbed out __________________________
7 it was _______________________________
8 (things) came out ________________________
9 to see _________________________________
10 they showed ____________________________
11 they got closer __________________________
12 they touched ____________________________
13 to show ________________________________
TASK #5: Read the extract again, more closely, and answer the questions in English,
using full sentences.
1 Why could students not understand the teacher’s explanations?
_____________________________________________________________________________
2 What did the teacher put on the board? Mention two things.
_____________________________________________________________________________
3 How would she try to help them to understand the vocabulary?
_____________________________________________________________________________
4 What was the blackboard like? Mention two things.
_____________________________________________________________________________
5 What did the teacher take out of the box?
_____________________________________________________________________________
6 When were the students nervous?
_____________________________________________________________________________
7 How did they show that they weren’t nervous anymore?
_____________________________________________________________________________
Use what you know about verbs to help you to complete this task. For example, infinitives will always end in -ar, -er or -ir and mean ‘to’ in English.
You do not need to understand every word of a literary extract in order to understand the gist of it, or to accurately answer questions on it. Focus on the language you do know first of all and begin to build a picture of what the extract is about.

Homework #3. DUE: [Date]
Está prohibido
TASK #1: Read what Enrique thinks about his school rules and answer the questions.
Creo que las normas son bastante severas pero necesarias. Se debe ser puntual y no se permite salir durante el día escolar. Está prohibido llevar piercings y no se debe ser agresivo.
1 How many words can you find that are similar to English words and help you
understand the text? Underline them.
2 What do you think Enrique’s opinion of his school rules is? (Answer in English.)
TASK #2: Match the Spanish expressions used for talking about what is allowed and
not allowed with the correct English translation.
1 se debe a. you are/one is not allowed
2 está prohibido b. you/one must not
3 no se permite c. you/one must
4 no se debe d. (it) is forbidden
TASK #3: Complete the translation of the text in activity A.
Creo que las normas son bastante severas pero necesarias. Se debe ser puntual y no se permite salir durante el día escolar. Está prohibido llevar piercings y no se debe ser agresivo.
___ ________ ________ the rules are quite _________ but necessary. ______ _______
___ be on ________ and _______ _______ ______ ______________ to ________ during
the ________ day. ____________ piercings ____ _______________ and _______ _______
______ be aggressive.
It’s possible to use ‘one
must’ etc. when translating
these but it sounds more
natural and less formal to
use ‘you’.
Think about the context of a text to help you to find the correct English words. For example, the Spanish word severas is similar to the English word ‘severe’ but this is not the word we use in English when talking about school rules.
The verb used to talk about piercings in Spanish (llevar) is not the one we would usually use in English.

Homework #4. DUE: [Date]
Destino Zaragoza
TASK #1: Asking different classmates, use the model conversation below to
complete the table of question words. Translate as many as you can before you
begin.
• ¿Tienes “what?” en español?
• Sí, “what?” significa ….
• ¡Gracias!
• ¡De nada! ¿Tienes “why?” en español?
• No, no tengo …
English Spanish
What?
Why?
How?
When?
Where?
Who?
Which?
At what time?
TASK #2: Imagine that you are talking to a Spanish
exchange student about tomorrow. Read the following
conversation out loud with a partner, choosing the
correct question word. Then swap roles.
¿A qué hora/Dónde/Cómo empieza el colegio?
■ Empieza a las nueve.
● ¿Cómo/Cuándo/Qué ropa vas a llevar?
■ Tengo que llevar el uniforme escolar. Voy a llevar una falda gris, una blusa blanca y un jersey azul.
● ¿Cuándo/Cómo/A qué hora vamos a ir al insituto?
■ Vamos a ir a pie.
● ¿Cuándo/Dónde/Cuál vamos a comer?
■ Vamos a comer en la cantina.
Depending on how much you can fill in first will guide your conversation.
You will either need to ‘give one’ (dame una) or ‘get one’ (toma una).
If you can understand key question words, you will be able to answer questions confidently.
Use the vocabulary and the main verb in the original question to help you create your own answers.
Pay close attention to the answer as this will guide you to choose the correct question word.

Homework #5. DUE: [Date]
Mis clubs y mis exitos
TASK #1: Notice the different verbs that are used to talk about activities.
1 I play the trumpet. Toco la trompeta.
2 I do judo. Practico el judo.
3 I’m a member of the Soy miembro del basketball club. club de baloncesto.
4 I dance salsa. Bailo salsa.
5 I sing in a choir. Canto en un coro.
TASK #2: Now complete these translations by choosing the correct verb from
activity A.
1 I play the violin. – _______________ el violín.
2 I sing in a group. – ______________ en un grupo.
3 I do gymnastics. – ________________ gimnasia.
4 I dance Zumba. – _____________ Zumba.
5 I’m a member of the athletics club.
– __________ miembro del club de atletismo.
It’s important to remember that the verb ‘to play’ is translated in two different ways. Tocar means ‘to play a musical instrument’ and jugar ‘to play a sport’.
Notice how all the verbs except this one end in -o – the present tense verb ending for ‘I’. This verb is an irregular verb so you have to learn it separately. (I am - soy)
In Spanish you can use the verb practicar to say ‘to do’ a sport. In English ‘to practise’ usually means to do something so that you get better at it, but in Spanish practicar can also just mean ‘to do’ when you are talking about doing a sport.
Remember from Module 1 that you do not usually need to use the subject pronoun (I, you, he, she, etc.) in Spanish. Can you remember why?
Remember that Spanish verbs have different endings depending on who the subject is (the person doing the action) and the tense it is in (present, past, future, etc).

Homework #6. DUE: [Date]
Revision
TASK #1: Read the survey and answer the questions on the next page.
