  • my identity in Christ 3

One summer a family visited a local theme park. The price of each ticket allowed each family member the full benefits of the park. The tickets included all the rides and shows that they had time for during their visit. If a person did not have a ticket, he did not get into the park.

Your ticket into Heaven is Jesus Christ. However, accepting Him as your Savior is not all there is to it. You now have a new identity that came with that decision. You are born again into the kingdom of God. You are a child of the King of kings. The Creator of the universe is your spiritual Father, or Daddy.

Your identity in Christ is your key to victory in this world. When you were born on Earth, you were given a first and last name. Your last name identifies the family to which you belong. With your spiritual birth, you have been given a new name and identity in Jesus Christ. There is nothing that can ever take God’s love away from you.

See what God says about you now:

    • You are My child. (John 1:12)

    • You have been born again. (John 3:3)

    • I have given you new life. (John 10:10)

    • I am your heavenly Father. (Romans 8:14-15)

    • You are no longer a slave of Satan, but you are My child. (Colossians 1:13-14)

    • You are born into My kingdom. (John 1:13)

    • You are a new creation. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

    • You were crucified with Christ, and your sins are gone forever. (Galatians 2:20)

    • You are a saint, set apart. (1 Corinthians 1:2)

    • I live in you. (Colossians 2:6-10)

    • I have blessed you with every spiritual blessing in Heaven. (Ephesians 1:3)

    • You are sealed by My Holy Spirit for eternity. (2 Corinthians 1:22)

    • You are seated with Me in Heaven. (Ephesians 2:5-6)

    • You have direct access to Me. (Ephesians 3:12)

    • Your body is My temple, and I live in you. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

    • I have made you My ambassador. (2 Corinthians 5:20)

As you continue your journey with God, you will learn even more about whom you are in Christ and what God has done for you through Him. Through your identity in Christ, you can have victory over the flesh, the world, and the devil.

In this devotional book, you will be learning about your identity in Christ. The following list is a quick reference to remind you of whom you are in Christ. The statements correlate to each week’s lesson in this book.

    • I have been delivered from darkness.

    • I have overcome the world.

    • I am a new creation in Christ.

    • I have every blessing in Heaven given to me.

    • I am God’s temple.

    • I have direct access to God.

    • I am seated with Christ in Heaven.

    • I am a friend of God.

    • I am at peace with God.

    • I am the light of the world.

    • I am chosen of God and dearly loved.

    • I am an enemy of the devil.

    • I am in a spiritual battle.

    • I am in a battle with the f lesh.

    • I have the Holy Spirit in me.

    • I am in a battle for my mind.

    • I sow spiritual seeds.

    • I am a witness for Christ.

When you decide to get serious about walking with Christ, the battle will intensify. That is why you should pray on the armor of God every day.

“ Lord Jesus, I desire to be obedient to You today by being strong in the Lord and the power of Your might (Ephesians 6:10). I take up the armor of God so that I can stand firm against the devil’s schemes. I recognize that Satan wants to destroy my life and to take advantage of me (John 10:10a). Thank You, Lord, that You have given me Your armor for my spiritual protection. Thank You that I have been seated with You in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6) and that I have authority over Satan and all of his demons. I give You my life today as a living and holy sacrifice (Romans 12:1).

As an act of obedience right now, I take the belt of truth. Thank You for Your Word, which is truth. Protect me from Satan’s lies.

I take the breastplate of righteousness. Thank You that I have been made righteous by faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1). Lead me in the path of righteousness today.

I put on the sandals of peace. Thank You that You have not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Empower me today to share with others about the Gospel of peace.

I take up the shield of faith so that I can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one. Help me, by faith, to obey You in everything.

I put on the helmet of salvation. I cover my mind and my thoughts with Your salvation. I recognize that my mind is a major target for Satan. Help me to take every thought captive to obedience to You (2 Corinthians 10:5).

I take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Help me to stand on the promises of Your Word today. I choose to be wise in what is good and innocent of evil, and soon You will crush Satan underneath my feet (Romans 16:19-20).

Thank You for Your armor. Help me to pray at all times today for my brothers and sisters in Christ. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray. Amen.”

quiet time with Godhow to have a

    1. Before you get started each day, pray for the Holy Spirit to help you stay focused on Him, to open your heart and mind to His Word, and to speak to you as you spend time with the Lord.

    2. Decide on a time each day that is good for you for having your quiet time with God. Plan to meet with Him at that time every day.

    3. Find a quiet place where the radio, TV, and computer are turned off—a place where there are no distractions.

    4. Approach God with the highest respect.

    5. Remember, God loves you more than you can ever imagine, and He cares about your every need.

    6. Do not do all the talking. Let God speak to your heart.

    7. If God shows you something in His Word, “do it.”

    8. As you spend time with the Lord in prayer, you must realize you are in the midst of spiritual warfare. Paul tells us, “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:3-4). In your Christian walk, you have an enemy. The only way you can stand against him is through the power of Christ. Revelation 12:11a says, “They overcame him [Satan] by the blood of the Lamb [Jesus] and by the word of their testimony.” By Jesus’ death, you have victory over the devil—Satan. Jesus’ disciple Peter wrote: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith” (1 Peter 5:6-9a). There is no need for us to fear Satan. Jesus Christ defeated Satan on the cross. When he tries to attack us (and he will), all we have to do is stand firm in Jesus.

    9. Put on the full armor of God every single day. Remember, you have an enemy, and God has provided you with His armor for your protection. “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” (Ephesians 6:10-11)

    10. Using your Prayer Journal (see page 130), write down your prayer requests and the date so that you can see how God answers your prayers. You can write about your struggles or needs, or those of your family and friends. You can also write about how God has helped you or what He has shown you. Write out your prayers as you pray to the Lord so that you can go back and remember what the Lord has done in your life.

    hear from Godlearning to

Each day as you approach the Lord during your quiet time, you must go to Him with an open heart and with the understanding that He wants to speak to you. “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). This is one invitation you do not want to miss. God makes a promise to us in this verse: “You will find me.” If you seek the Lord with all your heart through prayer, He promises to answer you. Here are some helpful things to keep in mind when you pray and ask God to speak:

    1. Be open to listen and obey the voice of God.

    2. Do not quench or stop the work of the Holy Spirit by disobeying His voice when He speaks to you.

    3. God may tell you that He loves you.

    4. God may reveal sin through the conviction of the Holy Spirit. If so, confess or tell Him you are sorry for your sin.

    5. He may speak in the middle of the night. Sometimes, God even speaks through dreams.

    6. He may speak during your Bible study.

    7. He may speak during your prayer time.

    8. He may speak through your thoughts.

    9. He may call you out to speak to someone about Him. Make sure you obey His voice if He does.

    10. You must believe that He can speak to you. Remember, be sure to write everything down in your journal. When God speaks, write down in your journal what He shows you.*

    PRAYER AND WORSHIP

GOD ENCOUNTERSIsaiah had an encounter with God that resulted in God calling him out in obedience to Him. Isaiah

saw the worship of the angels, he felt convicted of sin in the presence of God because of God’s

holiness, and he felt a burden for the people of Israel. Isaiah said, “I live amongst a people of

unclean lips,” then he surrendered to God’s will for his life, “Here am I! Send me.” Each day as you

approach the Lord, pray in the Spirit as instructed in Ephesians 6:18. Approach Him in worship and

thanksgiving, confess any known sin to Him every day, ask the Lord what to pray for according to

His will, and then surrender yourself fully to His will for your life every day.

    P.R.A.Y. Isaiah 6:1-8

Praise & Thanksgiving “ I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.’ At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.” (vs. 1-5)

Repentance & Confession “ Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips...” (v. 5)

Asking “ . . . And I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.” Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” (vs. 6-7)

Yield & Surrender “ Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” (v. 8)

    take up your cross

dailyLiving a life of obedience to Christ will be the result of daily taking up your cross and following Christ. You must deny yourself—surrender fully to Christ every single day. Take up your cross daily by reading God’s Word, praying and worshiping Him, putting on God’s spiritual armor, sharing the Good News of Christ, and using your gifts to minister to others. This equals radical obedience to Christ. Living out the cross every day helps you to discipline yourself for godliness. “Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” (1 Timothy 4:7-8, NASB)

“Then he said to them all: ‘If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.’” (Luke 9:23)

    developing a Christian worldview

    parent talk:

“Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” (Deuteronomy 6:7)

There are many beliefs in the world. These beliefs can be considered a person’s worldview. A worldview is how a person determines what they believe about who they are as a person, their purpose for being here on earth, what they believe to be truth, what they believe about family, and how they view the needs of the world around them.

For the Christian, your view of all these things is guided by what the Bible says. As a Christian you look at things differently because you have a tool that guides you—God’s Word. On sunny days, some people wear sunglasses to filter out the sun’s rays. They find it easier to see with sunglasses on bright days. As you live in the world, you need to have a filter to help you determine what is right and wrong. It is like putting on sunglasses to block out the sun. So the believer takes up the Bible to block out those views that do not line up with God’s Word.

On each week’s “Day 7” devotional page, you will see the “Parent Talk” logo. With your child, do the assigned reading, then discuss the topic with them. This will be a good time to discuss some cultural or societal conditions with them, answer questions your child may have, and explain what God’s Word says about those issues.

As parents, you need to teach your children how to perceive life in the world in light of God’s Word. Your decisions and your life should be directly in line with the Bible. Strive to develop a Christian worldview in your child. Next, review the past week’s materials with them and see what they have learned. Be sure to pray with your child.

I Have Been Delivered from Darkness

    1DAYMEMORIZE: Colossians 1:13

    READ: Colossians 1:13-14

If you watch TV much, you probably have seen a movie or a show in which someone was rescued from a burning house, a flood, or a battle. In real life, there have been many soldiers who have had to risk their lives to rescue fellow soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war. These soldiers are heroes to those who were imprisoned.

Colossians 1:13-14 says, “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness [Satan] and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves [Jesus Christ], in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” Jesus gave His life to rescue you from Satan’s prison. You were a prisoner of darkness, and now you have been rescued and brought into the kingdom of God, the kingdom of Light. You are free! You are a part of the kingdom of God. You are His!

You have God’s authority, through your identity, to tell Satan to leave you alone. Remind him that you are a child of God and that he has no authority over you any longer. Your identity and victory are in Jesus Christ. Give Him your all today. Be fully dependent on God in everything you do.

From what have you been delivered? ________________________________________________

How were you delivered from Satan’s kingdom? _______________________________________

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________

PRAY: Praise the Lord for saving you. Thank Him that you are a child of God and that there is nothing Satan can do to you. Give Him your life today and depend totally on Him. Pray on the armor of God, then write your prayer requests in your Prayer Journal.

Circle the box below that shows where you are now. Remember, you have been delivered from darkness.

    DARKNESS LIGHT

    MEMORIZE: Colossians 1:13

    READ: Genesis 3:1-6; John 10:10

“For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be _____________, and you will be like ___________.” (Genesis 3:5)

    “The ___________________________ comes only to ___________________________ and ___________________________, and ___________________________.” (John 10:10)

Satan robbed and stole Adam and Eve’s lives away. He deceived them into believing that they could live independent of God. “You will be like God,” he told them. When they made the choice, they were removed from the presence of God and banned from the Garden of Eden forever. Satan wants to rob you of your identity in Christ (just as Adam and Eve lost everything). Satan wants to make you believe that you can live independent of (separate from) God. Remember, your identity and only hope of victory is in your identity in Jesus Christ. You must submit yourself in total dependence on God today, fully relying on Him, and He will give you the victory you need to overcome Satan.

Who wants to rob you of your identity? ______________________________________________

How does he go about doing that? __________________________________________________

    _______________________________________________________________________________

    Whose child are you? _____________________________________________________________

Who gives you your identity? ______________________________________________________

Can you overcome Satan? ____________ How? _______________________________________

    _______________________________________________________________________________

    _______________________________________________________________________________

PRAY: Thank the Lord Jesus that you belong to Him and that nothing can take you out of His hands. Thank Him that you are born again and that you are a child of God. Surrender to Jesus today. Pray on the armor of God, then write your prayer requests in your Prayer Journal.

    MEMORIZE: Colossians 1:13

    READ: Romans 5:17-19

    Through one man’s (Adam’s) ___________________________, everyone was made a ___________________________.

    “…the result of one ___________________________ was ______________________________________ for ________ men.” (v. 18)

Because of what Adam did, he brought ___________________________ to every person.

“…the result of one act of ___________________________ was ___________________________

that brings ___________________________ for all men.” (v. 18)

Who brought you life? ___________________________ What did He do to bring you life?

    _______________________________________________________________________________

“…through the ___________________________ of the one man [Jesus] the many will be made

    ___________________________.” (v. 19)

The Bible shows that through Adam’s sin (disobedience), the whole world was made sinners and condemned to death. Sin came into the world through Adam’s sin. However, through Jesus Christ, believers in Him are made free from sin. Jesus was obedient to death on the cross for your sins, so God no longer sees you as a sinner. You are forgiven, and you are His child.

The word Abba means “daddy.” When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane before His death, He cried out to God, “Abba, Father” (Mark 14:36). It is an expression of a very intimate relationship between your Father in Heaven and one of His children. God is your spiritual daddy. You belong to Him. By His Spirit He has made you His child. You can go to Him any time. He will never leave you nor forsake you.

What does “Abba, Father” mean? ______________________________________________________

You are no longer a slave, but a ___________________________ of God. (v. 7)

What is God’s Word telling you today? _______________________________________________

    _______________________________________________________________________________

According to verse 7, you are an heir to God’s kingdom through Jesus Christ. An heir means you have an inheritance, a blessing. An inheritance is something a father would leave his family upon his death. It could be land, money, or any other item he wanted to leave his child. You have been given an inheritance in Heaven by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. All the blessings belong to you, so now you will want to live for Him. Remember your identity today. YOU ARE A CHILD OF GOD!

PRAY: Give thanks to the Lord for blessing you with His love and salvation. Thank Him for giving you an inheritance and that you are an heir of God. Thank Him that you are also a “son” of God through Jesus Christ. Invite Him to come now and live His life through you. Pray on the armor of God, then write your prayer requests in your Prayer Journal.

    READ: 1 Thessalonians 5:4-8

You are a son (child) of the ___________________________ and ___________________________ of the day. You are not of the ___________________________ nor of darkness. (v. 5)

“So then, let us ________ be like others, who are __________________, but let us be ___________________________ and self-controlled.” (v. 6)

You are not in darkness. You are a child of the light. You are part of the holy kingdom. You must be ready at all times to defend your rights to the kingdom of God. Satan wants to rob you of your rights by telling you his lies. “This Christian thing doesn’t work. You are not special to God. You are always going to be this way.” Do not listen to his lies. You are a child of God—born again into new life in Jesus Christ. Claim your identity and victory every time Satan tempts you to sin. Tell him, “I am a child of God. Leave me alone.”

Why are you not in darkness? ______________________________________________________

    7DAY

    developing a Christian worldview

    parent talk:

In this study on “my identity in Christ,” you do not want your child to give Satan any glory whatsoever. Your goal as you help your child discover who they are in Christ should be to help them understand that they have an enemy wanting to rob them of their identity in Christ and to destroy their life. Your responsibility as their parent is to teach your child how to have victory over Satan.

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free...So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:32, 36). In order to be set free, you must first understand who held you captive. This week’s memory verse declares your independence as a Christian. You have been delivered from Satan’s kingdom. The Greek word rhoo’-om-ahee means “to rescue or deliver.” Christians have been rescued and delivered from the enemy’s hands and brought into the kingdom of God. You needed to be rescued from the impending judgment of God. You also needed to be rescued from an evil taskmaster and given a new life. You have been delivered from Satan’s kingdom and brought into the kingdom of God. You no longer belong to the enemy.

MEMORY VERSE: “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.” (Colossians 1:13)

THIS WEEK: Explain what it means to be rescued. Give examples of some different rescue situation. Discuss the idea that you have been delivered from the hands of Satan.

QUESTIONS: 1. If you are delivered from Satan, why does he still attack Christians?2. Why is it important to know that you are no longer a part of Satan’s kingdom?3. Whose kingdom do you belong to now if you do not belong to Satan?

PRAY TOGETHER: Thank the Lord together for rescuing you from darkness and bringing you into His kingdom through Jesus Christ. Pray on the armor of God together, then have your child write their prayer requests in their Prayer Journal.

PRAYER JOURNALIntroductionAs you embark on your journey of prayer, you need to realize this is spiritual warfare. Paul tells us, “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:3-4). In your prayer life, you must realize that you have an enemy, and the only way you can stand against him is through the power of Christ. Revelation 12:11a says, “They overcame him (Satan) by the blood of the Lamb (Jesus) and by the word of their testimony.” By Jesus’ death, you have victory over the devil—Satan.

When we pray for the lost, we are praying that the enemy’s stronghold would be broken down. “He has blinded their eyes and deadened (hardened) their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn (convert)” (John 12:40a). When you pray, ask the Lord to open the eyes of those who are lost so that they might find the Lord Jesus and become a part of His family. When you pray to God, you can approach Him with confidence through the Lord Jesus and expect Him to hear your prayers. Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Knowing that the Lord hears us, we can pray effectively in His name. Jesus tells us, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened” (Matthew 7:7-8).

How to Use Your Prayer JournalOn the next several pages, you will find a guide to help you pray. These guides cover the following areas to help you get started in your prayer life:

    • Sunday—Pray for church services.• Monday—Pray for people in authority.• Tuesday—Pray for lost family members and friends.• Wednesday—Pray for your family and friends.• Thursday—Pray for missionaries and servants of God.• Friday—Pray for personal needs.• Saturday—Pray for ministry opportunities.

When you write down your request, be sure to write the date beside it. God is ready to spend time with you. He wants to show you great and mighty things. He wants to let you know that He is there 24/7, ready to hear your requests. Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Call on Him right now—He is waiting for you.
