Useful Hints and Tips!

BEFORE YOU START WORKING:

1. Make sure you understand the task and what is to be completed. Ask the teacher all questions before you start to work.

2. If working in a group, discuss the task to make sure all members understand what is to be done. 3. List everything that must be done to complete the task, don't worry about what is the most important yet. 4. Prioritize your tasks. On your list, number the tasks in order of importance. Rewrite the list if necessary.

Make sure the tasks can be completed in a timely manner - do not have a task that is next to impossible to complete in the time allotted.

5. If working in a group, delegate responsibilities. Divide up the tasks as equally as possible and assign people jobs that best complement their strengths (for example: give the artist of the group the drawing tasks).

6. Plan what needs to be finished and when. Individually or as a group, set deadlines so as not to get stuck or in a rut on a particular task.

LET’S GO ALREADY!

1. Once you have your personal list of priorities, start on the most important one. If it is a larger task, divide it into smaller ones.

2. As you finish a task, cross it off your list. This will give you a sense of accomplishment and show that you are really making progress.

3. Concentrate only on the task at hand. Do not be distracted by the other items to be completed; you will get to them later.

4. Put yourself into an environment that suits your working style. If you need to isolate yourself from your fellow students to work efficiently, do it! Put distracting items away or move away from them.

5. Once you have finished a task, move on to the next one. You can go back and make small changes later. TIPS TO AVOID PROCRASTINATION:

1. Don't draw out the planning process; just get it done and start working. 2. Complete the task and move on, don't be a perfectionist. Go back to it if you have time later. 3. If it is not the most exciting task, don't let boredom distract you. An even better reason to get it done. Show

some self-discipline. 4. Putting a task off until the last minute can result in the task being incomplete or of a lesser quality. It can also

affect tasks that require the completion of an earlier item. In the end, don't procrastinate. TIPS FOR SUCCESS:

1. Take on only what you can handle in the time allotted. If you get overwhelmed with too much work, you might just decide to give up.

2. If you can't work efficiently with friends, then don't. It is always tempting to talk with your friends about the latest movie, what your did last weekend, or who likes who, but save those conversations for lunch, break, or recess!

3. Make sure your goals are realistic. This works two ways, don't make them too difficult or too easy. 4. Never lose site of the end product. While completing the individual tasks, remember they are part of a larger

assignment. 5. Know what you are looking for. When doing research, avoid wasting time by knowing exactly what you are

trying to find.

Useful Hints and Tips! (Continued)

x Plan your Exhibition space. Think about how it will look and what the layout will be. Think

about space, wall space and eye catching ideas.

x Make sure all of your group members are active and productive. Help each other to gain a good understanding of each other’s tasks and information.

x Keep organised and keep communicating with all of the other members of your group. Support each other and do your best to cooperate.

x Keep your Exhibition Journal up to date and read it regularly. It will help you to stay focused on the Key Concepts and Central Idea.

x Reflect on your progress and make sure that you are proud of it! Think about ways to make your tasks more memorable and informative.

x Use your class teacher and mentor to answer questions and get feedback. They will be useful in guiding you on your way.

x Be focused on solutions not problems. Be independent and responsible, being determined to tackle obstacles that may get in the way.

x Edit and check your work very carefully. Spelling or Grammatical errors should not be your teachers or group member’s responsibility.

x Save your work regularly and keep it in a safe place that is accessible to all group members!

x Take the time each week to look back on your selected Transdisciplinary Skills. Think of ways that you can work on these during the Exhibition.

x Revise and rehearse individually and with group members. It is VERY important that you are well planned and as confident as possible

Enjoy yourself and be proud of your achievements!

You are capable of AMAZING things! -

CENTRAL IDEA

As you know, the Central Idea is the ‘Big Idea’ at the centre of a Unit of Inquiry. It is an enduring understanding that could be explored in depth at any age or ability. It is challenging and engaging, covering a range of big ideas and concepts.

Formative Reflection

What do you think this Central Idea means? What does this Central Idea make you think of? What words don’t you understand? What do we mean by this Central Idea? What are the meanings of these words? Do you agree with this Central Idea?

Immersion Engagements

Immersion Engagements are created and designed to get you thinking about the Central Idea and some of the important issues, concepts, ideas and problems at the centre of the Unit of Inquiry. To get the most out of these Learning Engagements you may need to stay focused by using some of the PYP Attitudes and Learner Profile.

Key Concept: Responsibility

In our ‘How We Share The Planet’ Unit of Inquiry, our Key Concept is Responsibility. All children in Year Six will be thinking about their responsibilities and what we are responsible for at school, home, in the community, our country and our world. As responsible global citizens we can take action to make a difference.

The Year Six Exhibition is a time to celebrate and extend your thinking and learning. Who is responsible for your learning? Who can help you to reach your goals and contribute to your successes? Who plays an important role in your learning?

Create a Pie Chart in the circle below with the people that you think are most responsible for your learning. You may include one, some or all of the ideas below.

Inquiry Questions

Inquiry questions are important because they help to guide our Inquiry and research. Before we begin to inquire, we need to know what we want to find out or discover. Inquiry questions need to...

x Be interesting an engaging

x Link closely with the Lines of Inquiry

x Be open ended with room to evolve

x Unable to be answered quickly

x Explore the Central Idea

x Direct us to detailed and thoughtful answers

Use the Lotus Diagram to help you formulate your questions. You may not have eight.

Key Concepts

For every Unit of Inquiry that we do at Benton we have explored big ideas and understandings. These are what we know as Key Concepts. There are 8 Key Concepts that encourage a wide range of thinking and questioning skills. They are like lenses that help us to explore information in different ways.

The Key Concepts are used to help focus our Inquiry questions and provide us with a variety of ways to explore our broad and interesting questions. Use the table below to identify the Key Concepts that are evident in your questions. You will need to be CREATIVE and OPEN-MINDED when linking the Key Concepts to your Inquiry questions. Try and limit yourself to two Key Concepts per question.

This table covers a wide range of skills that will enhance your learning and development. We will be focussing on these as the unit progresses, monitoring areas for improvement and celebrating successes. You should be extremely proud the skills that you already bring with you to the Exhibition. It is equally as important to be reflective on the skills that you would like to improve upon and develop further over the duration of the unit. Inquiry Tips and Recommendations

x Choose sources and resource materials carefully. Not everything including Wikipedia is reliable and current.

x Accessing information from a variety of sources can improve the quality of your Exhibition.

x Follow up all sources; a reference book might have a useful bibliography, the person that you interview might have some interesting ideas or a website might lead to other resources.

x ALWAYS write down the source of your information

9A printed text: record the author(s), title, publisher and date of publication

9A website: record the website address

9An interview: record the name, address, role of the person and the date

9A work of art/photo/song: record the title, artist and reference

9A television show/multimedia clip: record the title, date, channel

x Communicate with each member of your group to keep them informed and enthusiastic

x Make sure every member of your group is contributing and doing their best

x Take the time to carefully read resources, taking notes of the main points

x Gathering quality information is often better than gathering a large quantity of information

PLEASE KEEP ALL OF YOUR INFORMATION AS THIS WILL COUNT TOWARDS YOUR ASSESSMENT

Weekly Reflection Journal Reflection is an extremely important part of any Unit of Inquiry. Reflecting constructively on your progress throughout the Exhibition will be useful for you, your group and your teachers. Making weekly journal entries about all of your ideas, challenges, skills, decisions and actions will keep you on task. It will be a detailed record of your progress that will document the work you have been doing, as well as showing how your understanding of the issue is evolving. Journal reflections are listed in the timeline and will be read by your teachers as well as your mentors and parents. Please make sure that you work hard to keep your journal up to date.

Taking Responsible Action

An important part of any Unit of Inquiry is being able to share your new understandings and finding with your peers. A great way to share this knowledge is to teach it to them! This is taking responsible action! Each group is required to create a 30minute workshop informing other children in your Mentor’s class about the key understandings from your inquiry. Some of your creative exhibition tasks may be appropriate to use as part of your workshop. However, you will have to work as a team to write a detailed workshop that shares important knowledge and ideas from all of your group members. The format of each workshop will be different depending on your group members and their ideas. Each workshop will consist of a small variety of tasks, events or activities. Here are some ideas...

A short play A news report A word game

A PowerPoint A quiz Rotations

YouTube clip Game show Short speech

Comprehension task Role play Simulation

Puzzle Art activity Demonstration

Photostory Graffiti reflection Experiment

You might have your own fantastic ideas to add. Ask your teacher if you need help to find some that will be appropriate for your group. Think about....

x How you like to learn and what helps you to learn

x How you will introduce your workshop and how you will end it

x What you can cover in the 30 minute time limit

x The skills and talents of your group members

x What information and knowledge is important to share

x Who your audience is and what they would find interesting and engaging

x What will make your workshop stand out and be impressive?
