This year´s Pride on the Beach/Orgullo en la Playa will be our third year of pride in Manuel Antonio. At 10 AM

we will be gathering on the beach, Playa Espadilla near the big rock at the entrance to Playitas in order to raise the Pride flags as well as those of our sponsors. There will be music, food and beverages available at this time as well. Enjoy your friends, the sun and the waves. Meet new amigos! Check out the jungle!

At 12:30 pm we will begin assembling various groups who are participating in the march. At 1:00 pm we will begin the march down the beach to the entrance of the park and back.

We will be led by a traditional Costa Rican DRUM CORPS and MARCHING DANCERS as we make our way down and back the length of the beach. This year the tide will allow us to stay the afternoon so the music, food, fun and flags will stay up until 4:00 pm.

Come and join us for a unique Pride Parade here in Manuel Antonio.

San Jose’s Pride Parade, known as La Marcha de la Diversidad began without an actual parade

but with a gathering of the LGBT (that’s all the letters we used at the time,) community in Democracy Square (Plaza de la Democracia) beside the National Museum in downtown San Jose. These concentraciones were mostly organized by CIPAC (Centro de Investigaciones Para America Central) and the late Abelardo Araya, a great leader of our community who is fondly remembered for his vision and his efforts at the start of this movement.

La Diversidad and the march itself is the result of the efforts of these four people: Javier Umaña, Victor Montoya, Eddy Iser and Joan Acosta. They began, accompanied by a small group of about 50 brave souls marching amongst the cars of Second Avenue San José, 2008. Today La Marcha attracts more than 100,000 people as participants y spectators to the streets of San Jose. A huge challenge today is in the planning and organization leading up to the march, especially since almost everyone is a volunteer and the activity is non-profit.

There have been many difficulties to overcome and there are many stories to be told of the organization of the March. There were several years where there was no permit for the parade, but it went

ahead anyway. When Justo Orozco, a fundamentalist member of congress had the permits pulled two days before the event, we still went ahead; the ministry of health, transit police and the municipal police forbade the use of the main stage but be went ahead anyway and we are still moving forward. Last year was difficult for many of the organizers because one of our founders, Eddie Iser, passed away two days after the March. We will remember his last words at the March and will make this year better than ever.

In analyzing the last seven years of attendance we have seen an annual growth rate each year of 15 to 20%. The committee is therefore preparing for an expected 2019 attendance of 120,000 people at La Marcha. How wonderful it is to see how more and more people come with their families, their parents, their children and their friends to unite for one cause.

Everyone is invited to attend the Marcha de la Diversidad on Sunday June 23, 2019. It begins at noon leaving the Parque Metropolitano La Sabana, Cortés Lion Monument, at the far west end downtown San Jose and follows Second Avenue to the city centre.
