The Academic
Institute
Preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s challenges...
2007-2008
The Academic Institute Every new step that we take is
centered around our mission to
prepare students for success in
college and their lives beyond by
helping them cultivate a sense of
capability, determination, resilience,
self-advocacy, and a love of learning.
The Academic Institute was
founded in 1980 by Sherrill
O’Shaughnessy-Alexander.
Sherrill always had a strong desire
to be a part of the education field.
She started out by teaching Eng-
lish and Math for fourteen years,
first at an elementary school, then
at Inglemoor High School. Her
passion for teaching initiated an
inspiration to run a school of her
own. After overcoming the obstacles of learning the ways of the
business world, The Academic Institute was established. It has
grown from a two-teacher tutoring facility to what is now a school
with around 30 students and its largest graduating class yet.
Sherrill loves having the chance to interact directly with each
student and is proud to say she has encouraged and helped
many to maintain hope for college and successful futures.
“Dream big,” Sherrill advises, “And be willing to work as hard as
necessary to make those dreams come true.”

Predictions
⇒ Businesses claiming to be “carbon neutral” will be found out to
be nothing of the sort, causing a fallout in the green movement
⇒ At least one major U.S. airline will buy another
⇒ Music industry in crisis. CD sales will plummet while digital
music continues to grow
⇒ The gold rush in Facebook and social networks will begin to
fade as people tire of the same old thing
⇒ Internet TV will be invented. Business Week says, “if Apple
can’t do it, someone else will.”
⇒ Web 2.0 will find there are not enough ad dollars for all of
them to survive on, nor enough corporate buyers such as
Google, Microsoft, and tradi- tional media companies to
buy them all out
⇒ Internet privacy will be a
major concern
What not to expect in 2008… • DreamWorks isn’t going to leave Para-mount after all.
• Apple won’t reinvent TV viewing. • Juno won’t win an Academy award.
• Google won’t buy a media company. • Indiana Jones will not be the biggest film of 2008.
• Katie Couric won’t quit. • The Disney-Pixar deal won’t implode. • Fox Business News won’t close shop.
• MGM won’t be the first Hollywood stu-dio to get sold.
