Mission Statement

Page 3: years Annual Report Investing in Kids & Education › documents › filelibrary › annual_r… · writing process to enhance student learning. Rib Mountain Elementary School Techno

For ten years now, Wausau School Foundation has endeavored—

with our donors, sponsors, school district colleagues, and the wider community—to address important issues of classroom innovation, education beyond the classroom, and the emergency needs of individual students. In the process, we have distributed nearly $275,000 through

a wide range of initiatives to support the students and families of the Wausau School District.

With gratitude to donor members, in 2008-2009 we continued our mission to enhance innovative education opportunities, providing the following services:

Reach for the Stars Education Grant Program funded 9 applications, distributing over $21,000 to provide teachers the financial support to institute innovative programs beyond the traditional lesson plan. Among the noteworthy programs were:

Shaken Baby Simulators, which provide all 8th grade students at John Muir & Horace Mann Middle Schools an immediate understanding of the dangers inherent in shaking an infant, which is the most common cause of death in abused children and accounts for more than 50% of non-accidental injuries to children.

Project Ring Me Up from G.D. Jones Elementary School, a summer reading program designed to encourage G.D. Jones students, family members and the Wausau community to get involved in student literacy.

Smart Board and other technology enhancements at Rib Mountain Elementary, Horace Mann Middle, and

Wausau West & East High Schools.

The John A. Waldron Student Assistance Fund continued to address issues of financial aid to children facing emergency needs or hoping to take advantage of opportunities outside of the classroom unavailable to them due to issues of financial need.

The Caught in the Act Awards recognized the excellent service rendered by 16 members of the Wausau School District staff. In September 2008, local businesses sponsored in partnership with The Foundation Forest Fest FUN’D Run bringing runners, walkers, Monopoly game players, and families together to celebrate a day supporting education. The Foundation continues its work to build community through the legacy of the Heritage Families program and the Alumni Association for alumni services.

Thank you donor members and all who assisted in last year’s activities – we could not do it without you. Planning has begun for the coming year – there is much to be done if we are to sustain The Foundation’s important role for kids here in Wausau. We appreciate your continued financial and volunteer support that makes a difference. It will be critical to grow in those areas of support – so please feel free to share your enthusiasm about the Wausau School Foundation. With gratitude,

Jeffrey T. Leigh

Grants AwardedEducation is not thE filling of a pail, but thE lighting of a firE.” ~ W. b. YEats

This past fiscal year the Wausau School Foundation awarded over $61,000 in

support of innovative classroom/school projects and technology, professional development, and program enhancements not otherwise possible with public tax dollars. The Judd S. Alexander Foundation has provided major support for the “Reach For the Stars” grant program, along with Heritage Family donor members. The B.A. & Esther Greenheck Foundation continues to generously fund SMART Board technology at Wausau East High School for 2009.

“REACH FOR THE STARS” – G D Jones Elementary School:Project Ring Me UpSummer reading program designed to encourage students, family members and the Wausau community to get involved in student literacy to maintain and increase reading levels during the summer months.

Wausau West High School:Making It ClickStudents in Algebra II Extended access the Senteo Response System, a SMART Board interactive remote that creates instant feedback and evaluation by individual students or the class. The system encourages students to challenge themselves and more readily helps the teacher determine what concepts require review.

Horace Mann Middle School:Enhancing Science Classes With the Useof a Smart BoardInteractive learning for 7th grade Science through SMART Board technology creates lessons that increase student participation and improves student learning. “I’ve only just touched the tip of the iceberg…I’m excited to continue working on the different plans and ideas that I have in mind” – N Gajewski/Science Teacher

Wausau West High School:Nonfiction Matters: Using Picture Books to Build Background and Motivation Read 180 classroom library added books that help build students’ background knowledge, improve comprehension and increase

confidence as students gradually read more challenging content. Students then moved outside the classroom to practice their reading skills by reading to elementary students. Confidence and increased ability will motivate them to continue reading outside of the classroom.

South Mountain and Rib Mountain Elementary Schools:A Trip to Grandma’sFour y/o Kindergarten students traveled to Applegate Terrace Assisted Living Apartments throughout the year to interact with the residents during activities - increasing communication skills, socialization, improve fine motor skills and…bridging generations.

Wausau East High School:School Age Mothers (SAM) ProgramAddressing the educational needs of students in grades 9-12 currently pregnant or who are parents and attending school. Physical education and support groups are part of this program with a goal to successfully graduate all students. Educating and supporting teen parents through potential crisis ultimately benefits all involved – family, school and community.

Rib Mountain Elementary SchoolTechno TeachingThis grant provided a SMART Board and supported the training of staff, students, parents and community members on the multiple uses of the board. Teachers throughout the District joined in learning how this interactive white board can enhance the curriculum and increase student participation. As a result of this opportunity, the Rib Mountain school community is fundraising with a goal to place a SMART Board in every classroom.
