The children will preview today’s lesson as they play with differentcolored dough.

MaterialsFor each child:• 1/8 cup of yellow play dough• 1 teaspoon blue play doughFor the teacher:• plastic sandwich bags• plastic table covering• tape (optional) • cookie cutters (optional)

Preparation1. Prepare the play dough and set aside each amount for the

children in advance. Use the sandwich bags to keep it from drying out.

2. Cover the tables completely with the plastic and secure withtape if necessary.

Instructions1. Greet the children as they arrive. Explain that in this activity they

will learn another of Jesus’ parables called the parable of theyeast. Tell the children that by playing with these two colors ofplay dough they will learn what yeast can do.

2. Give the children their portions of yellow play dough. Tell themto play with their dough and make any shapes they wish. Offerthe cookie cutters if they are available.

3. Give the children the blue play dough. Tell them to mix bothdoughs together thoroughly and watch what happens to thecolor of the dough. Circulate among the children to ask the fol-lowing questions:• Which piece of dough was bigger? (yellow) • Which piece of dough was smaller? (blue) • What happened when you mixed the colors together?

(turned green) • Did you know that it only takes a little blue to change a

lot of yellow?4. Conclude by telling the children that in their Bible Story they

will learn that it only takes a little yeast to change a whole batchof dough.

5. Let the children play with their dough until the end of Preclass.6. Collect the play dough and place in a sealed container for the

children to use another time.

Teacher Tips• Make sure the children knead their play dough until it’s well

mixed and turns green. Offer assistance where needed. • If play dough is not available, have the children “mix” colors with

crayons or food coloring with water. In either case, prepare tocover the children’s workspace completely.

ParablesLesson 2

The children will learn about the parable of the yeast.

MaterialsFor the teacher:• 1 package of yeast • 1 loaf of regular bread (wrapped in plastic)• 1 “loaf” of bread without yeast (suggest communion bread)

PreparationPractice leading this activity.NOTE: See Teacher Tips for additional preparation ideas.

Introducing the Bible StoryShow the package of yeast to the children. Does anyone know whatyeast is? Let’s say it together. “Yeast.” What words does it soundlike? Beast—as in Beauty and the Beast. Or “Least” as in “liver is myleast favorite food.” And “feast” as in “Thanksgiving dinner is alwaysa feast at my house.” Yeast is added to flour to make bread. Whenit is mixed in with the other ingredients, it makes the bread doughrise and grow. Ask the children if they remember what they did intheir Preclass Activity today. Remind them that when they mixed thesmall amount of blue dough into the large amount of yellow doughthat the whole thing changed and turned green. Tell the childrenthat yeast is like that because a little bit can change a large amountof dough. Today we will learn a parable about the kingdom of Godand how Jesus compared it to yeast.

Presenting the Bible Story Open your Bible to Matthew 13:33. Tell the children that today’sBible Story comes from the New Testament book of Matthew.Remind them that they are learning about Jesus’ parables. Ask thechildren if they remember what a parable is. (Take responses.)Explain that a parable is a story that Jesus used to teach the peopleabout God. Last week, in the parable of the mustard seed, Jesustaught us that God’s kingdom can begin as the smallest of seedsbut it can grow to become the largest of all the garden plants. Intoday’s lesson they will learn about another one of Jesus’ parablesthat teaches something else about God’s kingdom.

[Jesus] told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heavenis like yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount offlour until it worked all through the dough.” Matthew 13:33

In this parable, Jesus said that the kingdom of heaven is likeyeast that a woman mixed into a large amount of flour until itworked all through the dough. • Why do you think that Jesus compared his kingdom to the yeast?• What do you think that the yeast makes the dough do? • If yeast can make a big difference in the bread, then God’s king-

dom can make a big difference in people’s lives!

The Yeast FavoriteShow the children the two types of bread you brought. Ask them todescribe the first loaf. Pass around a piece and let the children touchand smell it. Do not let them eat it. Show them the second loaf ofbread without yeast. Ask them to describe it and pass it around.• Do these two loaves of bread look alike?• Do they smell alike?• Do they feel the same?• What is the difference between these two pieces of bread?

(yeast)

If appropriate, let the children taste a piece of each bread anddescribe the difference in taste.

The children will make plaques from dough helping them rememberthat one person can make a difference in the church.

MaterialsFor each child:• pencil• ribbon, 1/8" x 24"• 1 easy-to-seal, plastic sandwich bag• rolling pin or empty coffee can • craft stick• 1 paper plate or piece of cardboard For the teacher:• scissors• dough ingredients: 4 cups white flour, 1 cup salt, 11/2 cup

warm water• mixing bowl• dry measuring cup • wet measuring cup• plastic container• waxed paper or plastic tablecloth • unsharpened pencil • tools: forks, cookie cutters, etc. for decoratingReproducible Pages:• Page A, 1 copy for each child• Page B, 1 copy for each childNOTE: The recipe described above makes 4 cups of dough. Eachchild will need approximately 3/4 cup of dough. Make as many batch-es as necessary for your class size.

Preparation1. Cut a 24" piece of ribbon for each child. Cut out the parent let-

ters from each copy of Reproducible Page A and roll each into atube. Tie the piece of ribbon around each one.

2. Cut the plaque template from each copy of Reproducible Page B.3. Prepare the dough as follows:

A. Mix the flour and salt. B. Stir the mixture well and then add warm water.C. Knead the dough until smooth.

D. Measure and place 3/4 cup of dough in a plastic bag for eachchild. Seal the bags tightly.

E. Store any extra dough in a plastic container.4. Make a completed craft including baking the plaque to show

the children.5. Prior to class, cover the work surface with the wax paper. Place

the tools for decorating in the center of the work surface.

Instructions1. Introduce today’s craft: In today’s Bible Story we are learning

that Jesus taught his disciples that the church is like yeast thatworks its way through a large amount of flour. Even thoughyeast is small–it grows and makes a big loaf of bread. In thesame way each of you is important and can make a big differ-ence in the church. You can make a difference by your example. You can be a great example to others by using kind words, helping others, obeying and inviting friends to church. Theseactions please God and can help people want to know God.Today you are going to make a plaque from dough. Your plaquewill help you will remember that you can make a difference inthe church. Show them your sample.

2. Distribute the plaque templates and pencils. Explain that thispaper is practice for what they will spell out in the dough. Havethe children write their first names on their plaque templates sothat the letters are clear and well spaced out. See Figure A. NOTE: If a child has a long name, help the child decide ahead oftime how to make the name fit. The child can either: (1) use ashorter name, such as a nickname or initials; or (2) make a larg-er-sized plaque so that all the letters fit.

3. Have the children form a plaque as follows:A. Distribute the plastic bags of dough. B. Have the children roll their dough flat, approximately 1/4"

thick, using the rolling pin. C. Have them shape the dough into an oval the size of their

plaque template. Explain to them that may use their tem-plate to check the size of their plaques.

D. Distribute the paper plates. Have the children lay their fin-ished plaques on their paper plates.

4. Distribute the craft sticks. Using their plaque templates as anexample, have the children engrave their names into the doughdeeply, as shown in Figure B.

5. As the children are working, make two holes on either side oftheir plaques using a pencil. See Figure C. These holes are forthe ribbon.

6. If time remains, tell the children to use any remaining dough tomake small shapes, flowers, hearts, etc., to decorate their plaques.

7. Place a parent letter, tied with the ribbon, with each child’splaque. See Figure D.

ConclusionExplain to the children that you will send a note home to their par-ents that will explain how to bake the plaque at home. After theparents have opened their letters, they can use the ribbon to hangtheir finished plaques. Close with a prayer asking God to show themways they can make a difference.

Teacher Tips• IMPORTANT: This dough is inedible and should not be eaten. • Keep the dough covered as much as possible so that it doesn’t

dry out as you work. It might be helpful to have a little water andflour with you during the class so that you can adjust the consis-tency if necessary.

4. Arrange the stars on the black poster board so that they fit andare readable. Use the Velcro dots to attach the stars to the blackposter board in their order. Place the “hooks” on the blackposter board and the “loops” on the stars. Place the additionalset of eight “loops” on the front of the stars without coveringany letters.

5. Practice leading this activity.

Instructions1. Introduce today’s activity: In your Bible Story this week, you are

learning about Jesus’ parable of the yeast. Jesus told the peoplethat the kingdom of heaven was like yeast that a woman mixedinto her flour and worked all through the dough. You are learn-ing that yeast can have a very important effect on breaddough—just as disciples of Jesus can have a very importanteffect on the people around them. Jesus wanted his disciples toknow that just one person can make a big difference for God.In your Scripture Memory Verse, you will hear about anotherway that God wants disciples to make a difference in the world.

2. Show the children the Scripture Memory Verse on the back ofthis Lesson Card. Say it to them three times, pointing to thewords as they listen. Ask them to say it together with you threemore times. Ask for volunteers to say the verse alone.

3. Show the children the poster board and stars that you prepared.Display the verse for the children and say it together with them, pointing to each star.

4. Remove the stars from the poster board and give them to thechildren. Say the verse slowly as the children come up and placetheir stars in order on the poster board. Remove the stars, mixthem up and repeat this.

5. Remove the stars from the poster board, mix them up and takeone out and set it aside. Have the children come up on theirown and place their stars in the correct order on the posterboard. When it comes to the star that was removed, place itface down on the poster board as the children say the wordsfrom memory.

6. With each new round, remove one more star from the posterboard and give the rest to the children. Let them say the missingwords from memory as you place them face down on the blackposter board—until all the stars on the poster board are facedown and the children say the verse from memory.

7. Ask for volunteers to place all the stars and say the verse frommemory. Give all the children a star sticker (if available) toremind them of today’s Scripture Memory Verse.

The children will review this week’s Bible Story as they think of waysthat their examples can make a difference for God.

MaterialsFor the teacher:• scissorsReproducible Pages: • Page E, 1 copy for the teacher (on heavy paper)

Preparation1. Cut out the puzzle pieces from your copy of Reproducible Page E.2. Practice leading this activity.3. Read Matthew 13:33 to review this week’s Bible Story.

Reviewing the Bible StoryOpen your Bible to Matthew 13. In your Bible Story this week, youlearned about Jesus’ parable of the yeast. Jesus wanted the peopleto understand that just as yeast can make a great difference in aloaf of bread, disciples can make a great difference in people’s lives—and God’s kingdom can make a great difference around the world!

Jesus wanted his disciples to understand that their lives andtheir examples were very important. Jesus wants his disciples to beshining stars and bright lights for God. Just as Jesus was a perfectexample of how to live, disciples can show Jesus’ example everyday—and make a difference. In our activity today, we are going tothink of ways that we can make a difference for God.

Life ApplicationShow the children the puzzle pieces you prepared. Explain that oneach piece is a different way that the children can be a great exampleof Jesus to others. Tell the children that they will put the puzzle togeth-er as a group and think of ways that they can each be like Jesus.

Distribute the puzzle pieces to the children. Make sure that eachchild or pair of children has one piece. Have the children sit in a cir-cle. Choose a child to go first and say what is on his puzzle piece.(Be prepared to help children who have difficulty reading.) Ask allthe children to think about this idea. For example: If the child reads“Be kind” on his puzzle piece, say: How can being kind make a dif-

ference? Offer suggestions from your own life, e.g.: When I am kindto someone who is having a hard day, it shows them that I careabout them. That can make a difference in how they feel for therest of the day!

As each puzzle piece is discussed, have the children put theirpieces down and put the puzzle together. Tell the children that thekingdom of God is like this puzzle—lots of different people workingtogether to make a difference for God. Each one of us can be justlike the yeast in Jesus’ parable. If we all try to be shining stars andgreat examples of Jesus, then we can help the people around us tosee God!

ConclusionShow the children the puzzle they made. Remove one piece. Ask thechildren if the puzzle is complete. (no) Explain that just as the puzzleneeds every piece to fit together, so does God’s church. Jesus wantsall of his disciples to make a difference so that everyone in the worldcan see God through their lives. Close with a prayer thanking Godthat disciples can make a great difference for God.

Teacher Tips• Mount your copy of Reproducible Page E on a piece of cardboard

or sheet of craft foam before cutting to make an even sturdierpuzzle for this activity.

The children will think of different ways that they can lead by exam-ple in this “follow the leader” game.

MaterialsNo additional materials are needed.

PreparationPractice leading this game.

Instructions1. Introduce today’s activity: In your Bible Story this week, you

learned about the parable of the yeast. Jesus told the peoplethat the kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman mixedinto her bread dough. Yeast is an important ingredient thatmakes bread grow and rise. Jesus wanted his disciples to seethat just as yeast makes an important difference for bread, disci-ples can make an important difference for God. In your gametoday, you are going to take turns leading each other by exam-ple and trying to guess who the leader is.

2. Ask the children if they have ever played the game “IndianChief.” Explain that this game will be played similar to that oneexcept with some different movements. Have the children sitIndian style in a circle on the floor. Lead the children through thedifferent movements described on the back of this Lesson Card.Explain the significance of each one as it relates to the idea ofmaking a difference for God. Do this several times until they arecomfortable and remember them.

3. After you have led the children through all of the movements, choose one child to lead the group in a series of different move-ments that you have just learned—without saying anything.Explain to the children that in today’s game, they will take turnsbeing the “leader” and the “guesser.”

4. Choose one child to be the “guesser” and have him leave theroom (or activity area). Once he is gone, choose one child in thecircle to be the “leader.” Tell the children that the leader willdecide which movements the group will do and at any time, theleader can change to a different movement. The object is towatch the leader closely and to change movements as soon as

he does. When the ”guesser” returns, he will observe the groupand try to guess who the leader is. Tell the children that theyshould not try and give away who the leader is.

5. Give each child a chance to be a “leader” or a “guesser.” Play asmany rounds as time permits.

ConclusionAsk the children how it makes them feel to know that they can set agood example for others to follow. Encourage the children to thinkof ways at home, school, church and in their neighborhood in whichthey can be a great example. Remind them that when they are likeJesus, they can be like the yeast in the parable and make an impor-tant difference for God. Close with a prayer for the children to seeways that they can make a difference for God.

Teacher Tips• Think of additional movements or gestures for the children to use

for this activity.• If necessary, use a large writing surface to give the children

visual cues for each movement, e.g. a simple picture, object orkey word.

The children will practice looking up Paul’s letters in this activity.

MaterialsFor each child:• pencil For the teacher:• a few letters (personal, business, junk mail)Reproducible Pages:• Page F, 1 copy for each child

Preparation1. Complete the activity on your copy of Reproducible Page F.2. Practice leading this activity at home.

Instructions1. Introduce today’s activity: In this week’s Bible Story, you learned

about Jesus’ parable of the yeast. Jesus wanted his disciples tounderstand that something small—like a little yeast—can make abig difference, just like one disciple’s example can make a bigdifference in helping people to know Jesus. Have you ever won-dered how the first Christians who had never met Jesus learnedto be like Jesus? Some of the apostles—like the apostle Paul—traveled to many new churches to teach the young discipleshow to live like Jesus. Not only did Paul travel to the churchesbut he wrote them letters, too. In our activity today, we willlearn about some of Paul’s letters.

2. Show the children the letters that you brought. Explain the dif-ferent kinds of letters and their importance to you. Tell the chil-dren that you will probably throw out the junk mail, and fileaway the business letter. Show them the personal letter and saythat this is a letter that you will keep and read many more timesbecause it is special to you. Explain it is special because of theperson who wrote it and the ideas that are expressed in it.

3. Tell the children to open their Bibles to their Table of Contents.Help them find the book of Romans. Point out all of the lettersfrom Romans to Philemon. Explain that Paul wrote all of these let-ters to disciples all over the world. Tell the children that when thedisciples received a letter from Paul, they read it to the entirechurch and saved it so that they could read it over and over again. • What kinds of things do you usually write about in your let-

ters to people? (Take responses.) • What kinds of things do you think that Paul wrote about in

his letters? (Take responses.) Paul wrote letters to the disciples to remind them of Jesus’teachings and to encourage and teach them how to be greatexamples to the people around them. Paul knew that if the dis-ciples were like Jesus, they would “shine like stars” and helpmany people learn about God and be saved.

4. Distribute the copies of Reproducible Page F and pencils. Leadthe children through the questions. Encourage the children towork together to help each other. Use the Answer Key on theback of this Lesson Card to check their work.

ConclusionAsk the children to think of some ways that Jesus made a differencefor people. Ask them how it makes them feel to know that disciplescan make the same kind of difference today. Encourage the childrento remember the parable of the yeast as they try to be an exampleof Jesus. Close with a prayer for the children to see ways that theycan make a difference this week.
