Why Cleaning and StoringYour Fur Is So Important

Annual cleaning and storage prevents your fur from drying out and protects your investment.

The number one concern with fur garments is that the natural oils in the pelts can dry out if the garment is not properly cleaned and stored during the summer months. Once this happens, the pelts become brittle, easily tear, and cannot be repaired.

And that’s not all. While a slight oiliness to your fur is normal, that oiliness also attracts dust, pollutants, and airborne particulates that get caught in the hairs of the fur and removes moisture from the pelts.

The fact is, when you take care of your fur, it will take care of you for years to come!

How To Care Properly for Your Furs• Storeyourfurgarmentsincoldstoragewhenyouare finished wearing them for the season or not using them. The more time fur garments spend in cold storage, the longer they will last.• Cleanyourfurgarmentsat least once per year. If your fur is exposed to beauty products or smoke on a regular basis, you may choose to have it cleaned mid-season as well.• Haveyourfurgarmentcleanedbyaprofessional furrier only. Dry-cleaning, washing or laundering will severely damage your fur. • Neverstoreyourfurinacedarcloset.Cedar absorbs moisture and will dry out your fur.• Usebroad-shoulderedhangerswhenhangingafurgarment.• Whenhanginginacloset,allowspacetopreventitfrom being crushed or creased by other garments.• Haverips,looseseamsanddamagerepairedas soon as possible by a professional furrier. This prevents minor problems from becoming major, more expensive problems.• Neverstoreyourfurwithmothballs.• Donotstoreyourfurinabagofanytypewhileathome or in a storage facility.• Hangyourfurawayfromheatsources(i.e.,radiators, heat vents).• Donotexposeyourfurtodirectlightforalengthyperiod of time. Long-term exposure to direct light can cause oxidization and discoloration, particularly with white fur.• DoNOTstoreyourfurinafreezer…ever.• Neversprayalcohol,solvent,andsilicon-based substances directly onto your fur. • Avoidperfume,hairspray,ormakeupfromcominginto direct contact with your fur. The alcohol content in these products will dry the leather and stiffen the guard hairs.• ItisOKtowearyourfurinsnoworlightrain.Justshakeitout afterwards and allow it to hang in an open area.• Clothcarupholsteryshouldbecoveredtoprevent damage to your fur. • Clothcarupholsterystretchesunderweightandwillgrab the guard hairs on your fur and pull them out when you leave your seat.• Becertainyourfurgarmentsareadequatelyinsured.
