PROGRAMWe have some exciting and interesting guest speakers lined up for the 2017/2018 guild year! Here’s the fall lineup.

Tuesday, September 19 at 7 p.m.Céleste Compion - The Bolt and the Beautiful - The Shweshwe Sagawww.meerkatshweshwe.com/

Shweshwe fabric is an indigo dyed, discharge printed fabric. The process is still done traditionally whereby fabric is fed through copper rollers which have patterns etched on the surface, allowing a weak acid solution to be fed into the fabric, bleaching out the distinctive white designs. The fabric

can easily be identified for its intricate all-over prints and beautiful panels.

Céleste was born and raised in South Africa, and now lives in Elora, Ontario. She will be presenting an informative and entertaining talk on the history of Shweshwe cloth that will include a slide show presentation and a trunk show of Shweshwe items. She will also bring some of the lovely Shweshwe fabric to sell at the guild meeting.

Tuesday, October 17 at 7 p.m.Ana Buzzalino - The Quilter in Mewww.anabuzzalino.com/

Looking forward to October, Ana Buzzalino will join us from Calgary. Ana has been a frequent guest on Quilting Arts TV and contributes regularly to Quilting Arts Magazine. Her work has also appeared in the American Quilter’s Society Magazine, in A Needle Pulling Thread, and in Modern Patchwork, as well as in 101 Patchwork Projects and Quilts and Quilt Scene. Ana’s quilts have won several awards at local and national shows, and have been juried into major International shows. At Quilt Canada 2017 in Toronto, you may have seen her quilt "The Shape of Things Unseen", which won the award for Excellence in Threadwork, using WonderFil Thread.

Tuesday, November 21 at 7 p.m.Libs Elliott - Quilting with Codehttp://www.libselliott.com/Toronto's own Libs Elliott is known for using computer code and algorithms to create her random quilt patterns. Libs will discuss her ongoing exploration of how technology can transform a traditional craft into modern, functional art. She will show examples of her work and give us a peek into her process.

WORKSHOPS

Ana BuzzalinoIf you watch Quilting Arts TV, you may recognize Ana as a frequent guest. She teaches at the acclaimed Houston Quilt Festival, so we’re extremely fortunate to have her visit us to share her artistic talents.

Tuesday, October 17 - Simple Landscapes with Stitch and Paint9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Fee: $100In this workshop, students will work on a small wallhanging (10” x 20”), learning to cut and sew simple curves without marking or pinning. Once the background is finished and the basic landscape sewn, a design is drawn on the fabric. The piece will be quilted in preparation for painting. Painting techniques will be demonstrated, including shading and highlighting. Kit fee: $15

Wednesday, October 18 - From Sketch to Stitch in Inktense Pencils9 a.m. to 12 noon Fee: $50In this class you will use a sketched design and free motion quilt it on the fabric as if you were sketching on a sketch pad. Free motion techniques will be demonstrated. Once the design is fully quilted, it will be coloured using Inktense pencils. Kit fee: $40

Wednesday, October 18 - Feather Quilting1 to 4 p.m. Fee: $50Students will learn tips and tricks to start their journey into quilting beautiful feathers. From traditional to modern, these are one of the most difficult motifs to master, so why not learn from a master? Sewing machine required.

Libs Elliot Libs is a local Toronto artist known for using computer code and algorithms to generate her random quilt patterns.

Tuesday, November 21 - The Rebel Quilt9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Fee: $100This workshop is for anyone who wishes to make a bold and modern geometric quilt. The session allows for time to cut and learn to make each block type and stay organized, as well as learning how to choose fabrics. This most popular of Libs’ patterns is suitable for all levels of quilters.

Wednesday, November 22 - An Exercise in Controlled Randomness9 a.m. to 12 noon Fee: $50In this class, students will use only paper and pencils to walk through a series of worksheet exercises that Libs uses to generate her quilt patterns. Using controlled elements in a random way, each participant will end up with a unique quilt pattern layout - no two Chaos Quilts will be the same.

Wednesday, November 22 - Introduction to English Paper Piecing1 to 4 p.m. Fee: $50Students will have an opportunity to slow things down and do a little hand sewing. Using “The Wicked Hex Mini” design will allow participants to see the final result more quickly. The class will also review fussy cutting techniques, different basting methods and how to procure shapes.

COMMUNITY QUILTING NEWSMonday meetings continued through the summer months, with members doing CQ projects or working on their own quilt projects.

A recent fabric donation that was retrieved from a deceased Brampton donor spawned four bins of 100% quilting cotton fabric, two bags of miscellaneous fabrics for the touch quilt project and another 15 bags that will be passed along to Arts Junktion (a centre that distributes assorted materials for use by Toronto District School Board teachers).

We encourage members to continue to contribute to the CQ effort by picking up pre-cut quilt top packages or a quilt sandwich to complete at home from our table at the September meeting.

We have a full complement of volunteers for the Monday meetings at Stan Wadlow Community Centre, and are unable to accept new attendees at the moment. To address this situation, a new initiative is being launched in the form of informal small groups of quilters meeting in homes to work together on CQ projects. The suggestion is for friends to organize their own get-togethers, weekly or bi-weekly, or whatever frequency suits. Since we continue to receive fabric donations, your group will be invited to ‘shop the stash’. Batting and backing fabric could also be made available to complete the quilts. OR, your group could get together to assemble ‘Touch Quilts’.

Please contact me with any questions and/or to schedule an appointment to ‘shop the stash’.

President’s MessageI would like to welcome back our members – new and old - to the 2017/18 guild year. What a great program we have this year. Mark your calendars with all our upcoming events – our monthly guest speakers, the workshop, the quilt show! Come and reconnect with your quilting community.

Quilting to me is all about community, and York Heritage Quilters Guild helps me satisfy my need for quilts. I share with others in the guild my love of fabric, of piecing, of appliqué, of quilting. I just love quilts – traditional or modern, practical or artistic. After our monthly meetings, I go home re-energized with visions of quilts dancing in my head.

Our first meeting of the year will be busy:• You can renew your membership, if you have not already done so. • Sign up for a workshop. We have an exciting range of classes available. Information is on our website and

brochures will be available at the meeting.• Do some shopping. Our guest speaker, Céleste Compion, will be selling her gorgeous line of fabric and the guild

will also have a table of bargain-priced fabrics and books for sale. • Show and share your latest creations!• The quilt show is fast approaching and it’s time to submit the entry forms for the quilts you wish to display. The

deadline is September 30. Forms have been issued with this newsletter, and are available on the website.• Sign up to volunteer at the quilt show on November 10 and 11. Many hands are needed to make it a success.

The executive has worked hard to put together an exciting year for all.

Come, share, quilt!

DISPLAY & COMPETITION

We welcome all members, both old and new, for another entertaining and educational year at YHQG. It looks like a great line up of speakers and classes, and you too, will have an opportunity to join in by displaying your quilts at Show and Share.

What have you been up to in your sewing room this summer? As I recall, June was a rainy month, so I suspect a number of you spent the time working on something creative to cheer you up. It’s time to come and show it off to the rest of us!

Please come to our table adjacent to the left stairs up to the stage to “sign in” your quilt or wall hanging. Large quilts will be returned immediately after showing, and wall quilts will be returned at the end of the meeting.

White Glove People for the September 19 meeting are: Anne Oliver, Laurel Rowbotham, Gail Shaw, Daniela Tiger, Chris Trottier and Margaret Whitehead.

WANTED!Your Guild is looking for an individual, or a group of individuals, who would like to showcase their quilts at one of our Guild meetings. We are a curious group, and enjoy being stimulated by other people’s creativity and sewing skills.

Perhaps you have just inherited a trunkful of quilts, and there is an interesting or mysterious story to tell about them. Perhaps you are a member of a small quilting group who work on pieces that have a central theme, such as embroidery or Japanese design, or whatever else makes you happy. Perhaps some of you have won prizes for your work, and are too shy to tell us.

Just give me a call, and we will find you a spot on our agenda that is suitable to you and/ or your group. We would ask that there be no more than 10 quilts, and we will give you 10 - 15 minutes to tell us all about them.

I am looking forward to compiling a waiting list!

The exception is the November meeting, since we

do not meet in December.v A sign-out card is in each item and we ask that you print clearly: borrowing date, your name and telephone

September Sale! Bring lots of loonies and tooniesWe were fortunate late last year to have a large number of books donated to us and many have now been placed into the library. In June, a group of volunteers painstakingly carried out an inventory of our library collection. As a result, many of our older books have been removed. Those, along with some of the donated books, will be displayed for sale at the September meeting. There is lots of variety and everything is reasonably priced, so remember to bring your coins and small bills! Members: the library is always willing to accept donations from you. For large quantities, please call first to make arrangements, since we have limited storage space.

If you come across a recently published item you would like to recommend that we purchase, please provide me with as much information as you can (e.g., title, author, publisher, date of publication, etc.).

In Memory of Kiyomi SakamotoCanadian Federation of University Women, North Toronto chapter ScholarshipAt the April guild meeting, CFUW NT member Pat Steenbergen accepted donations from members in memory of Kiyomi Sakamoto for the CFUW NT Scholarship Fund. Approximately $800 was collected. And, with the help of Kiyomi’s friends Christine Bowers, Sherry Davidson and Judy Murikami, fabrics which Kiyomi had collected were sold off at the Guild’s annual Sewing Room Sale and at Pieceful Nights. The $1800 raised will also be donated to the Scholarship Fund. So thanks to the Guild members, $2,630 will be donated to the Fund in Kiyomi’s memory. At the Quilt Show in November, there will be a special display of Kiyomi’s work.

A Look Back - From Mary Lou Watson

York Heritage Guild was nearly a decade old, had organized quilt shows and challenges and fabric exchanges and guest speakers. In 1987 (30 years ago!) we brought Mary Ellen Hopkins to Toronto from California. Her book, “It’s okay if you sit on my quilt book” was self-published in 1982, with four subsequent editions. We had read her book, expected to hear her new ideas. Perhaps we would leave behind a few of our firmly rooted quilting traditions. We were not disappointed. Not for a minute. Mary Ellen was all about “attitude adjustment”. We quickly learned that her approach to quilting was efficient, effective, and most important, fun. And more fun.

She challenged our fixed ideas about colour: No matchy uppy Black is bright and gay, intensifies other colours A bit of green will add some spark to almost any quilt Navy kills All reds go together Taupe is a valuable colour Go for clash

Mary Ellen died following a stroke in 2013. We take for granted many of the ideas she was promoting when she visited our Guild in 1987. And she made it so enjoyable!

Directions for 4” Permanent Sleeve

This sleeve is applied at the same time as the binding. Cut a strip of fabric 8 1⁄2” wide and about 2” shorter than the width of your quilt. For example, a 70” strip for a quilt that is 72” wide. Hem the ends and fold the strip in half, lengthwise, with right sides out. Place raw edges of the sleeve along the unfinished top edge of the quilt and pin to the quilt back, as you’re pinning the binding to the quilt front. Stitch through all the layers. Blind stitch the binding over the stitching line on the quilt back, then blind stitch the bottom, folded edge of the sleeve to the quilt.

Directions for 4” Temporary Sleeve

With this method, you apply the sleeve after the binding has been finished. Cut a strip of fabric 8 1⁄2” wide and 2” shorter than the width of the quilt. Hem the ends and sew into a tube. Turn right side out. Hand stitch one edge of the sleeve just below the binding. Leave a bit of slack when sewing the other edge.
