Youth in Action Balochistan (YIAB) is a non-governmental, non-profit and non-political, development, advocacy and youth led organization dedicated to working with the deprived, neglected oppressed rural communities to fight against poverty and injustice. We strive, we engage effectively all the low-income communities in the fight against poverty. We are committed to serving the people in need, regardless of their religion, race or gender.

In 2007 a group of educated, dynamic and like-minded youth working in the development sector, got together to establish an organization, for addressing the most urgent and pressing needs of the people of Baluchistan. True to this spirit the organization was named Youth In Action Baluchistan (YIAB).

Considering their association with the development sector the group was cognizant of the plethora of problems plaguing the province. Consequently, the organization’s focus was not kept limited either in in terms of geography or sector. Whilst operating in different districts of the province, YIAB has been carrying a range of interventions in the areas of microfinance, education, health & hygiene, youth & women empowerment, emergency response & preparedness, governance, free legal aid, human rights, etc.

The type of activities undertaken by the organization range from capacity building to service delivery, with focus remaining on the deprived and marginalized segments of the society. Whereas in terms of operations what characterizes YIAB’s functioning are its efforts to (a) enlist involvement of the locals when initiating activities at the grass root level; and (b) mobilize women for bringing peace, tolerance, and development in society. Although a somewhat new entry in the development arena, YIAB – owing to the linkages of its members with national & international funding agencies – enjoys a diverse portfolio, characterized by partnership with organizations like Orix leasing Pakistan, USAID, UN-FAO, UN-Habitat, UN-WOMEN, Ministry of Human Rights & Rural Development Department, Government of Baluchistan, Baluchistan Education Foundation.

VISION“An enabling environment for the realization, respect, and protection of

Page 4: YIAB Profile (1)

Work through integrated approach that combines economic, social, political development and advocacy to address the root cause of poverty.

Focus on community empowerment rather than service delivery. Develop local level intuition and build partnerships with communities in order to enhance

their capacity to sustain positive change.

STRATEGY

We are working on three interrelated dimensions that include Economic, Social and Political. To eradicate poverty and improve the quality of life of the poor and low-income communities, YIAB employ a holistic and integrated approach coupled with long-terms economic aid, environmental security and partnership development.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE IN YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Last 08 years, we effectively engage the low income youth, communities and are committed to serve youth and people in need regardless of their religion, race or gender. YIAB’s area of expertise in community development includes.

Social MobilizationSocial Mobilization is at the heart of everything we do. Wherever YIAB works, whether expanding its regular core programme, implementing donor-funded projects, or responding to disasters, the principles and practices of social mobilization remain the same. These are: establishing mutual trust; understanding that there are mutual rights and responsibilities related to accountability and transparency; observing the principle of benefitting the youth and communities at large, rather than individuals, and ensuring that the poorest and most vulnerable people are included in the programming.

We work with rural youth and women to release their potential abilities and skills so as to build their knowledge and enable them decide their own development priorities. We also help youth to find the resources they need to meet their identified needs. The purpose is to break the cycle of poverty, both economic poverty and ‘poverty of opportunity’. When youth come together for a common purpose – which is ultimately village wide socio-economic development – they are in a stronger position to bring about sustainable improvements in the quality of life.

The first step of our approach to addressing development problems is to organize youth into village level organizations known as Youth Development Organizations (YDO) YIAB’s integrated community development approach works through boosting active youth participation and further farming multi-functional youth groups under YDO i.e. Enterprise Development Group, Men Support Group, Women Support Group, Farmer Support Group, Health Committee, Women Health Committee, WASH committee, Education Committee, Disaster Management Committee and Child Protection Committees that are then able to identify and address local issues. We refer to this

YIAB supports a comprehensive community health program to reduce the number of newborn and maternal deaths in the remotest rural areas of Balochistan. We provide curative, preventative or even palliative solutions.

Water and SanitationWater, sanitation and hygiene underpin a hefty portion of our destitution battling improvement ventures.
