I know! I know! The song about the most wonderful time of the year was not written about the last Sunday in March. However, the last Sunday in March is, without question, one of the most wonderful times of the year. It is always a special time of year because it always marks the beginning of the annual Memphis School of Preaching lectureship. I am always enthused for the lectures but my anticipation for this year’s lectures seems even more heightened. I can’t wait for March 29-April 2, 2020! Why will this year’s lectureship be so wonderful?

It is always wonderful to see old friends and make new ones. Singing praise to God with fellow members of the family of God is also a wonderful experience! This year’s theme is especially wonderful: “Magnify His Name.” Can you think of a better theme to investigate? If you peruse the lectureship flyer inside this edition of the YokeFellow, you will see the broad array of subjects to be covered during this lectureship. This lectureship will magnify the Messiah! The Messiah is magnified in the Law, the Psalms, and the Prophets. Gospel accounts of the Messiah’s life (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) all magnify His name, and they show us how Jesus magnified the Father with His matchless life, His miracles and His resurrection. The Book of Acts is the story of how the early church magnified His name by evangelism. The Epistles taught the church how to magnify His name in daily living, and the Book of Revelation shows us the reward for so doing.

The importance of humbling ourselves and magnifying Him is a major emphasis of this study. The creative power of God, in making everything from the stars to the human body, humbles us to magnify His name. Another part of this humility will be seen in our willingness to do all in His name, instead of in our own willful way. This includes our worship to God (preaching, praying, singing, communion, and giving).

Moms and Dads need to know how to magnify His name. We need to know how to magnify God in the workplace. This lectureship is jam-packed with character studies of men and women who show us how to, or how not to, magnify His name. Many of these characters faced bad news, enemies, and hard times, and yet they magnified God in the midst of it all.

These characters show us how to magnify God by what we say, what we do, what we see, and where we go. Indeed, the entire Bible shows us how to magnify His name, from our youth until the twilight years. We can magnify Him both in life and in death. His Word teaches us how to magnify Him as both our Saviour and our Judge.

Please accept the following as a personal invitation to experience a most wonderful time of the year at MSOP: “O come and magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together” (Psa. 34:3).
