PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
“Tell me and I’ll forget.
Show me and I may remember.
Involve me and I learn.” Benjamin Franklin
I hope you’re enjoying browsing our website and Facebook pages and
learning more about the Yorba Linda Woman’s Club. The links are
listed on the first page of your yearbook. These links will not only
open up another world of adventure connected to your membership,
they will provide the tools to get you involved. The following sentence

We are a group of women coming together to improve
our community, locally, nationally and internationally in
a spirit of fellowship and friendship.
My favorite question to ask seasoned and newer members is, “Why did you
join our club?” Most will echo the sentiments in the sentence above. If you’re
reading this newsletter, you have satisfied the eligibility requirement to
become involved. Basic obligations, as an active member, are to attend the
General Meetings and volunteer at our two main fundraisers. Thank you to
all who made our Fall Craft Faire so successful. Thank you, in advance, to all
who are committing to the success of our upcoming Spring Extravaganza.
Please consider this your personal invitation to become more involved.
When I look out from the head table at the General Meetings, it warms my
heart to see the enthusiasm and smiling faces of those in attendance. When
I see an abundance of purple shirts throughout the Yorba Linda Community
Center during our fundraisers, I’m right there smiling with you!
Your Time is Your Gift to Others, so please evaluate where it can be best spent.
Take some extra time to carefully read the reports in this award-winning
newsletter. You may learn that getting involved is as easy as an email or
phone call to a chairman. There is always strength in numbers and you are
needed!

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
The Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force has begun to encourage anti-human trafficking activists to attend
the sentencing hearings of human traffickers. This request began when in the fall of 2017 when a
trafficker was sentenced to 2 years in prison even though he had underage girls enslaved in the sex trade.
District Attorneys and police have noticed that some uneducated judges view victims of human trafficking
as people who chose the activity and not innocent people who are terrorized into sex work by a guerilla pimp. A
guerilla pimp uses threats and beatings for control. They often start out as a boyfriend to earn trust but then switch
to violence and cruelty to maintain control once the trust of a young woman is earned. The targeting of
unsuspecting women is part of the entrapment process.
At the hearing Ronald Preston Spurlock, age 39, was sentenced for the recruitment of several victims to engage in the
commercial sex industry. He placed sexually explicit advertisements on several websites. Spurlock required each
(Continued on Page 7)
YORBA LINDA LIGHTS, March 2018 Page 7
(Continued from Page 6)
victim to reach the quota of $1000 a day (10-15 men a day). He threatened multiple victims that he was watching
them at all times and was known to carry a gun that he would brandish to reinforce his threats. Spurlock was in the
NBPD (Newport Beach Police Department’s) radar. Multiple investigations by The Orange County Human
Trafficking Task Force and NBPD were able to observe the victims making contact with sex purchasers
and collected texts from Spurlock that had language consistent with pimping the victims.
Nearly all of the victims refused to appear in court. A letter from one mother conveyed that her daughter was
traumatized by the abuse she suffered at the hands of Spurlock. The mother of his four children refused to testify
against him. Even though she has been repeatedly beaten by him, she decided not to participate in the proceedings.
When Spurlock had a chance to advocate for himself he asked for the judge to consider his 3 daughters and new born
son which he has never held. He wants to protect them and teach them to avoid the criminal system. He was crying
and proclaimed that he is now a changed man who found God. His parents are considered pillars of goodness in their
community. Daniel Varon, D. A. from H.E.A.T. (Human Exploitation and Trafficking Unit) noted that it is because
Spurlock came from a good family and did not lack for opportunities to make a productive good life that his prolific
criminal record stands out.
In the end Ronald Preston Spurlock was sentenced to 20 years in prison for 2 counts of human trafficking, 4 counts
pimping, 8 counts pandering and conspiracy to dissuade a witness. His 4 years in prison is considered time served
will be subtracted from the 20 years. He is prohibited from contacting former enslaved victims, however they can
contact him. He is required to give biological specimens which will be added to the data bank that
identifies sex offenders. He has to turn over his firearms and pay a $10,000 fine for his firearms.

This year’s Relay will be May 19-20, 2018 from 9 am – 9 am at Canyon High school. The
theme is Celebrating Life’s…Moments, Milestones, and Memories. We are looking forward
to a very successful event with Placentia, Brea and Anaheim Hills. There will be lots of
activities, food, information and fun.
If you haven’t registered yet, you still have time. Go to www.relayforlife.org and search for
Yorba Linda Woman’s Club or Relay for Life of the Canyons. There is no charge to register.
Once you have signed up, send emails to friends and family for donations, read about the various ways you
can raise money, and help spread the word about our event. Our club has consistently been one of the top
fundraisers and I hope to continue the tradition.
Get ready for Relay Bunco on March 13. This is a fun way to help raise money for our team and have fun with
other club members. Crystal Gates has lots of fun planned.
If you would like to help and can spare one day, our team needs a person to organize the set-up and clean-
up of our site.
Our Spring Heroes event is scheduled for March 23 at the Nixon Library from 6–8 pm. There will be speakers,
activities and food. Thank you to Pat Porter, Pat Rune and Laverne Stern for organizing and confirming the
venue.

Beautiful things come together ONE STITCH at a time!
With the above thought in mind, the two sewing workshops in March will be doing just that. Mark the
dates of the workshops on your calendar and plan to come join the groups to help make those beautiful
things. Everyone is welcome and no sewing experience is needed.
