Thomas D. O’Shea is this year’s Grand Marshal. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Tom came to York County in 1988 with his family, making his home in Spring Garden Township with his wife Kris. Tom and Kris have raised three children—daughters Kelly and Molly, and son Brian. They also enjoy two grandchildren, Mackenzie and Liam.
Tom has been an attorney at CGA Law Firm for over 25 years where he practices Family Law. In addition to a successful practice, Tom has been very active over the years with the York County Bar Association, serving as president in 2003, and their charitable arm, the York County Bar Foundation, serving as president of that body in 2010. Tom also is the York County Board Representative for MidPenn Legal Services, a non-profit organization which provides legal services to low-income residents and survivors of domestic violence in 18 counties in Pennsylvania.
At age 50, Tom took up running for fun and fitness. One of his favorite things about living in the York area is having access to the York County Heritage Rail Trail, where he runs in his spare time. Tom has run five marathons for enjoyment or charity events. Also a cyclist, he has finished two century rides (100-miles), one on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, and one around Lake Tahoe on the California/Nevada border. He is currently working on his swimming for an upcoming triathlon.
One of Tom’s true passions is his involvement with York Little Theatre. He has been a part of the theater since his move into the area, serving on the board for 20 years, including a term as president. He has acted in and directed many shows at YLT, and continues to do so. Tom has found a way to combine two things he loves—theater and the law—by writing and performing in The Bar Stools, a popular musical parody show that benefits MidPenn Legal Services as well as York Little Theatre by poking good-natured fun at local lawyers & judges.
With a name like O’Shea, it’s no secret that Tom has deep Irish roots. His grandfather was born in Tralee, Co. Kerry, and his paternal grandmother also boasts an Irish heritage. Her Whalen ancestors emigrated first to Manchester, England, and then on to the United States. Tom has visited Ireland twice—once in the 90s with his wife when they traveled to Tralee and visited the church where his grandfather was baptized. The second trip was in 2007 with his daughter, Molly. She ran in the Dublin Marathon that year, which is what got Tom thinking about giving running a try himself.
Tom has received many awards for his involvement with the Bar and York Little Theatre, and was the 2010 recipient of the Richard E. Kohler Civility and Ethics Award from the Inn of Court.
