After announcing in our February newsletter that the NAB had withdrawn sponsorship, we received a pleasant surprise just one week later, when the bank announced that sponsorship would resume and continue. The bank has now sponsored the program for twenty three years.

We were fortunate to have Jason Verwoert, Director -

The aim of this policy is to protect children and young people whilst they participate in any of our youth programs. This will be done by providing an explicit structure when working with children and young people. Whilst the policy is too extensive to be reproduced here, we have summarised the main features and requirements as the policy pertains to Youth of the Year.

The policy, in full, may be downloaded at:

https://lionsclubs.org.au/about/governance/constitutional-policy-resources/

Lions Australia Child Safe Policy

The Interview Judges are required to possess a WWCC, WWVP, Blue Card etc. (Exemptions may apply in some

jurisdictions). Judges are to be presented with the Judges’ Code of Conduct, which will govern their conduct when

working with our youth. Entrants must be offered the opportunity to have a support person accompany them during the

interview. Judges’ panels must comprise members of each gender. Other than a support person who an entrant may wish to accompany them during the interview, it is

not a requirement to have Lions or other observers present during the interview. Where possible, the door to the interview room should be left ajar. Lions Involved At least two Lions, male and female, should manage proceedings involved in the course of the

interview. A Lion should never be in a situation where he or she is in alone with an entrant. Lions directly involved with the YOTY Program must possess a WWCC, WWVP or Blue Card. Transporting Entrants Lions should avoid being involved in the transport of students, however, there are instances where this might be unavoidable. If this is a requirement then the following should apply: Two Lions, preferably one of each gender must accompany be in the vehicle, transporting the youth/s. The two Lions must possess a WWCC, WWVP or Blue Card. Communicating With a YOTY Entrant When communicating with a Youth of the Year candidate it is important this communication is

transparent at all times, appropriate in language, content and tone. When communication is by email or hard copy, ensure that a copy of your communication is on the

appropriate letterhead and is cc’d to the parents or guardians. Accommodation at Events It is recommended that any accommodation required for a candidate is arranged by parents or

guardians. If billeting with a Lion or other host is required then the principles of Youth Exchange Hosting apply. Hosts must complete a Youth Exchange Host application form. Record Keeping The District Chairperson will be responsible for obtaining and retaining details of the judges and their

residential addresses through the YOTY Winner Advisory Form. This will apply from Club to District

It is essential to conduct a risk assessment prior to the conduct of a YOTY event. This is not an onerous task and acts as a checklist and reminder to those involved in managing the YOTY event of the need to observe child protection procedures. It should take little more than a few minutes. The Risk Assessment proforma, has been updated to reflect requirements of the Child Safe Policy. It is available at:

Risk Assessment

This is a requirement of the Child Safe Policy adopted at the May 2019, M D Council meeting.

It is imperative that the highest standards of integrity are exhibited by all those associated with the Program, includ-ing Lions Clubs members and the judges who will interview our youth. To that end, this document is provided to judges to guide them in their conduct when working with these young peo-ple.

(Youth of the Year Coordinators should present this code to judges prior to the interviews). 1. Please respect the dignity of all persons:

treat our youth with courtesy and without discrimination or harassment

apply your knowledge and skills without bias in respect of

race

religion

gender

sexual orientation

disability

a youth’s appearance

2. We require judges:

to possess a Working With Children Clearance, or its equivalent.

(A National Police Check is not sufficient).

to dress appropriately.

to refrain from disparaging comments about entrants.

to refrain from making unsuitable judgements or comments concerning an entrant’s responses to

questions.

to ensure the confidentiality of the proceedings of each interview, including to the Lions Club’s members and

to the Youth of the Year coordinator.

to agree that they will not contact an entrant after the conclusion of the Youth of the Year event.

to declare a conflict-of-interest if an entrant is known to them.

to provide constructive feedback to entrants at the conclusion of the public speaking.

3. Apart from announcing the public speaking and the overall winners, judges are not to reveal the placings, nor the

points; to the contestants themselves, any of the audience or to the Lions members. The YOTY Coordinator should receive the summary score sheet, in the event of the withdrawal of the overall winner from the next level of the Program. The YOTY coordinator must ensure the confidentiality of the scoring.
