    Hea l t h a n d We l l n e s s

It is important for us to take care of our eyes as we age. Poor eyesight not only affects how we drive, but can also affect our balance. Clear eyesight can help reduce the risk of falls, and by association, brokenbones, sprains, and bruising. Degenerative problems like cataracts and glaucoma may also be issues.

It is important to take measures to see clearly as we age. If you have problems with blurry vision and do nothave glasses, going to a specialist would be beneficial. You may find that if your vision is clear, but you havetrouble viewing things up close, that you may need reading glasses. Both of these are things that may notnecessarily be caused by anything other than your eyes aging.

Cataracts cause your vision to appear cloudy. In most cases, they develop slowly and the affects are notimmediately noticeable. Glasses and brighter lighting will help in the early stages, but if your visiondeteriorates beyond that, surgery is the only option. The procedure is generally both safe and effective.

There are multiple types of glaucoma that can be found, with the two most common being Open-Angle andAngle-Closure glaucoma. These are both caused by drainage canals in the eye being either clogged or blocked.Glaucoma causes vision to slowly fade, and can cause blindness if left untreated. There is currently no cure, although medication and/or surgery can cease any further loss of vision.

To schedule an appointment with a University Hospitals physician, please call 440-285-3030.

    Q. What About My Will?A. If you use the “Good Deeds” checklist below toarrange transfer of all your assets, your family may noteven need to use your will. However, it is stillimportant to have a will in case something is missedand needs to be transferred through probate. Forparents with younger children, a will is importantbecause the parents can designate their choice ofguardian for their children in the will. Your will shouldbe stored in a fireproof place. You may also deposityour will with the Geauga County Probate Court for anominal state required fee.

Real Estate Survivorship Deeds for CouplesUnless your property is in a trust or an LLC< your deedMUST include language to the effect of “for their jointlives, remainder to the survivor of them.” Otherwise, your property would be considered a probate asset. Therefore, in most cases, couples buying property maywant survivorship language in the deed at the time ofthe purchase. If there is no survivorship language, couples should consider a “survivorship deed” in whichthey transfer their property from themselves tothemselves and include the survivorship language. If aperson wishes to add a second person to a deed, he orshe may also do this by way of survivorship deed, butbe aware that the additional person becomes a co-owner of the property, which could expose yourproperty to that person’s creditors. Preparation NOWwill save your family time and money! You shouldconsult with an attorney before executing asurvivorship deed.

Transfer on Death Affidavit for Singles andWidows- Single property owners may want to file aTransfer on Death Affidavit that states the individual’sname, legally identifies the property and names thebeneficiary or beneficiaries upon death. Bank AccountsPayable on Death (POD) –POD Bank Accounts –Single account owners can add POD beneficiaries tobank accounts at no cost. All you’ll need are thenames, addresses and social security numbers of anybeneficiaries and the bank that holds the account cando the rest at no cost. Upon death, the money is paiddirectly to the POD beneficiary when he or she shows adeath certificate. Until that time, the beneficiary cannotaccess your account. Joint Account – You also have the option to add abeneficiary to an account as a co-owner will havecomplete access to your account and will be able towithdraw money from the account. Be careful.

Motor Vehicles Transfer on Death (TOD) – The vehicle owner canhave a TOD notation placed on a car title by going tothe Geauga County Clerk of Courts Title Office, 470Center Street #8-b,Chardon, Ohio 44024, phone: 440 279-1750 with theoriginal title, the names of up to two beneficiaries, theiraddresses and social security numbers. Boats, Campers, RV’s, Mobile Homes These areall titled assets that need either a co-owner or a TODnotation on the title to avoid being held up in probate. The procedure is similar to a TOD notation on a cartitle.

Bonds/Stock SharesSavings bonds- The asset must be jointly owned orhave an official Transfer on Death notation right on thebond in order to transfer directly. Good Deeds continued

Bonds/Stock SharescontinuedIndividual shares of stock- Most stocks are now held inmutual fund accounts that already have a beneficiarydesignation on them. However, individual shares ofstock must be transferred through probate court if youown them as an individual with no co-owner. You mayplace a Transfer of Death notation on shares of stockthrough the issuer. Find help online atwww.compushare.com or contact the issuer.

CD’s, Life Insurance, Annuities, InvestmentAccounts, Retirement Accounts, IRA’s, 401K’s403B’s You should have beneficiary designations onall your long term investments. Typically, you wouldhave identified beneficiaries when you signed up forthe insurance or investment and so the proceeds arenot likely to go to probate court. Be warned: If youname “my estate” as a beneficiary, it will go to probatecourt. Check your beneficiary designation forms byasking the issuer for a copy. If divorced, check to see ifyou have updated your beneficiary designation.

Emotional and psychological trauma is the result ofextraordinarily stressful events that rock our sense ofsecurity, making us feel helpless and vulnerable. Asituation that leaves one feeling overwhelmed andalone can be traumatic, even if it doesn’t involvephysical harm. As much as we hope that our family, friends, and community would not experience

trauma, the reality is that negative events can occur at any time.

Immediately after the event, shock and denial are typical.Someone may have frightening memories, or a sense ofconstant danger. A person may feel numb, disconnected, andunable to trust other people. When bad things happen, it cantake a while to get over the pain and feel safe again. Longerterm reactions include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships and even physical symptoms likeheadaches or nausea.

These symptoms and feelings typically last from a few days toseveral months, gradually fading as the trauma is processed.Painful memories or emotions can be triggered by ananniversary of the traumatic event, or an image, sound orsituation may remind you of the experience.

In response to this need, the Geauga County Board of MentalHealth and Recovery Services offered a series of workshops sothat social workers in Geauga County could obtain NationalTrauma Informed Specialist Certification while learning the keyconcepts needed to be effective responders to trauma inducingevents.
