Pastor’s Corner—Letter from Father Paul O’Donnell

Dear Families and friends of St. Margaret Mary’s,

This is an update on what is happening. After finally reopening our parishes, following an approved safety plan detailing some very strict guidelines, we were informed this past Monday (July 15th) that the Governor of the State of California is shutting us down once again. Unfortunately, and until further notice we are not allowed to hold any church services indoors, that is, inside the church. But thanks to God, this will not shut us down. We will continue to celebrate all Masses, daily and Sundays, plus f unerals, confirmations etc. outside on the beautiful Monsignor Marc Trudeau Memorial Verandah adjacent Hegarty Hall. Happily, as you know, it is a beautiful space and there is enough room and after having already celebrated two Masses there, the experience is quite pleasant, if one doesn’t mind the occasional small plane coming in for a landing at Torrance airport. Moreover, even though indoor confessions are once again not allowed, we will still be having confessions, but outdoors in the Sacred Heart Patio area. And even though our parish office will be technically closed, we will still be available (Monday through Friday, 9am—4pm)—to help, inform and guide us through all this.

The virus is real and is dangerous but God is still with us, and Sacred Scripture tells us that there is real virtue in obeying legitimate authori-ty, as long as it does not contravene God’s law. So we will all, no doubt, continue to do our best. The truth is we need God. We need faith in God. We need to keep our faith strong to face all the difficulties of these trying times. The only way to do that is through prayer and the sacraments. As Isaiah stated, “Unless your faith is firm, you will not be firm”. So, let us not be afraid, but continue out our faith and trust in God, praying for ourselves, our families, our neighborhoods, our nation, the economy, and the whole world—for an end to COVID-19 and a return to sanity. May God keep us all safe. May the Blessed Mother intercede for us and may St. Michael the Archangel defend us in battle.

With prayers and friendship, Fr. Paul

SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN

Practice safe social distancing this summer

As our churches, parks, and stores reopen to the public, it’s still important that we maintain

good hygiene and practice safe social distancing. As Archbishop Gomez has said,

“the coronavirus is still out there, it is still contagious, and it is still dangerous.” As a

family, work together to limit the spread of the coronavirus by washing your hands vigorously for at least 20 seconds, wearing masks when

out in public (unless your children are too young), and staying home if you feel sick. For

more information on social distancing practices, visit https://angelusnews.com/local/la-catholics/
