You Only Live Twice

You Only Live Twice is the fifth instalment in the James Bond franchises andtakes a different approach to the earlier Bond films. Lewis Gilbert directed thisfilm that takes the audience on a journey to Japan where James Bond played by

Sean Connery woos many woman and has a very impressive final fight scene.The production design created by Ken Adams has been debated by many critics.

You only live twice uses Classism in the villains lair to emphasise his power,shown in figure1.

The classical art work on the walls connote order balance and power which areonly a few things that are associated with classism. Classical architecture is usedby many rulers to emphasise their power over their people. It is likely that theset designer may have added these paintings into the scene to make him appearmore powerful.

The lair incorporates a few ostentatious elements such as a piranha tank that blofeld uses to kill a few people. Its likely that these elements have put of viewers to the second segme nt of the film, as the plot escalates beyond thebounds of preposterousness , that the film starts to fragment. (Berardinelli,1995) As elements in the film become more outrageous it ispossible that the believability of the scene is lost. It is probable that Berardinelliis trying to say that for a bond film it lacks credibility, the elements of realismthat the newer bond films have are not apparent in this film making the plot highly unbelievable.

This film possibly inspired many films like Austin Powers because You only livetwice is very easy to make fun of. Dr evil is said to be a spoof of James Bondsnemesis blofeld (IMDb,1990) and in the Auston powers film there is also avolcano hide out in the Caribbean that Dr evil uses in figure 2.

Figure two is probably mocking the original set in you only live twice but hasexaggerated everything to gain that comedic approach. Alothough figure two ishighly exaggerated it reflects Dr Evils personality perfectly its bold and lacks theinconspicuous nature that a true secret lair should have. But this works for thisfilm because this probably works as comical visual satire that pushes the plot along.

When comparing The spy that shagged me to You Only Live Once , there aremany things that screamed Oston powers in You only live once, It appears that the only thing missing was mini me from the Austin powers spoof. It appears asif the James bond franchise spoofed the Austin powers films because You onlylive Twice marks a shift away from the earnest espionage thrills of the earlierBond films toward the over the-top camp phenomenom quality of the laterefforts (starpulse,1999)The film appears to have an over the top quality to it, AsStarpulse points out it doesnt seem to have the sophisticated nature of olderbond films but it was entertaining and it is apparent that it inspired others likethe Austin powers franchise. Although they use this film in a mocking way it demonstrates the failure of this films credibility because a film like, The spy that shagged me was heavily influenced by it.

The volcano lair looks amazing in this depiction and the fight scene chosenseems lie it would have looked like an interesting film to watch. But the Posterart fails to tell the viewers of the cheesy route that this film has taken.

Overall Blodfelds secret lair on first sight appears to be loud and vulgar in someplaces but it still represents power and dominion over his workers with theclassism used. The grander in size of the lair and location connotes that Blodfeldthinks highly of himself. It is probable that this character does like most evilvillains, therefore his piranha tank and over exaggerated lair represents him.
