Donations Committee Recommendations Evergreen Golden Retriever Rescue The club takes in dogs from shelters, people giving up their dogs to rescue for numerous reasons and have begun importing dogs from Asia. Unfortunately, many of these dogs have health issues that are brought into Rescue, which require medical visits, surgery, medicine, special shampoos, etc. This gets costly, with the dogs that are released to the Rescue club. There is also time involved with each dog making sure they can be placed into new homes. The donation committee recommends $250.00 be donated to the Evergreen Golden Retriever Club Rescue for all the hard work they do on these dogs that come into their group. WASART (Washington State Animal Response Team) WASART (Washington State Animal Response Team) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit all-volunteer organization that helps companion animals and livestock out of immediate crisis and dangerous situations. For example, if your horse falls into a well, your dog falls over a cliff, your cow gets stuck in a barn wall, or your com-munity needs help sheltering animals for short-term issues such as threat of fire, WASART is trained to help out in these situations. Though WASART does not self-deploy, the team may be called out by an own-er or an agency such as the fire department or sheriff's office. WASART responds to disaster and emergen-cy situations involving all domesticated livestock and companion animals. We are not trained to handle wildlife or exotic species. This group of people came to our club meeting about two years ago, and the members that attended were immensely impressed by WASART. The committee recommends $250.00 be donated to this organization. Golden Retriever Foundation From their website:” To further understand the diseases, genetic defects, injuries and other ailments that af-flict dogs in general and Golden Retrievers in particular. To foster and promote the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of displaced Golden Retrievers.” They also donate money to the Morris Animal foundation for research specifically on Golden Retrievers, and American Kennel Club for their ongoing research of dis-eases in dogs such as hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, other cancers in dogs, and also pigmentary uveitis. The committee recommends $500.00 be donated to the Golden Retriever Foundation with an emphasis on cancer research of our breed. Friends of Guisachan https://friendsofguisachan.org/main/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/FOG-tri-fol_brochure.pdf To support the organization that is trying to save the mansion, property, etc., where the breed was created. Donations will help fill in windows, stabilize walls, eliminate trees growing inside the former structure. They also educate the public and Golden Retriever owners about the history of our breed. The committee recommends $500.00 be donated to this organization for the education and saving of the ancestral grounds of our wonderful breed.

The Rescue Report
This article is different from any article I’ve written in the past 20 years. Yes – I
have Rescue Reports on my computer from as long ago as 1999. This one is differ-
ent, however, because I was asked to write it and in addition to numerous facts, it
contains my thoughts and opinions. Hopefully, it will answer at least some ques-
tions.
The topic of interest is our international rescue efforts. I am aware of the controversy they have created
and the strong feelings and opinions that have been expressed on FB pages, in emails and at meetings.
As with most controversial topics, feelings often get in the way of reason – on both sides.
So let me start with some facts. Over ten million dogs are slaughtered every year in China for food and
as many as 70% of these dogs are stolen pets with the remainder being bought from poor villages with
excess dogs. What makes the situation even more horrifying is that it is felt that the meat tastes better if
the animal is tortured before being slaughtered so they are sometimes electrocuted (takes up to 5
minutes for the dog to die) or hanged or bludgeoned to death. Those are only three of the cruel methods
used to kill these dogs. Stray dogs are bludgeoned to death on the street by police. Only 20% of the
population in China eat dog and those who do are primarily older and male and they think it provides
health benefits. Google Yulin Dog Meat Festival.
The Humane Society International (HSI) is working in China, South Korea, Viet Nam and Indonesia to
support efforts by local groups and individuals to both rescue a small fraction of the dogs, close slaugh-
terhouses and change public attitudes. The HIS was involved in the creation of the China Animal Pro-
tection power which is a team of volunteers who join with the local police to stop trucks full of dogs
and cats, who are usually being transported illegally, on their way to the slaughterhouse. Xioli, the vol-
unteer with whom we have worked in China has herself shut down several slaughterhouses. She also
has excess dogs turned over to her but she does not buy dogs and none of the rescue groups who work
with her have ever paid for the dogs themselves – only for vet care, supplies and food/boarding. There
is little chance that these dogs will be adopted in China especially since large dogs were recently
banned from much of Beijing. This ban resulted in Xioli having to move her rescue facility to a new
location.
South Korea is also a big consumer of dog meat and many of the dogs ultimately slaughtered for food
are raised on dog farms. It is estimated that there are as many as 17,000 illegal dog farms in South Ko-
Please note that the opinions expressed in this article are not necessarily the position of your Editor or of the EGRC Board of Directors. EGRR is an independent organization.

rea. The HIS since 2015 has closed over 12 dog farms each having from 50 to 250 dogs. They assist
the farmer to learn to raise a legal and more profitable product. On July 1, 2019, with the assistance
of the HIS and other animal welfare groups, a dog meat market in Busan, one of South Korea’s big-
gest, was closed and 19 dog meat market sellers ended their businesses. More than 80 dogs were
saved. https://economy-chat.com/index.php/2019/07/03/busan-dog-meat-market-finally-shut-down-
once-and-for-all/ Mr. Kwon, the person we work with in South Korea, rescues Goldens and other
breeds from local shelters much like we did here 30 years ago. He is one of many rescue volunteers
who do this work. If these volunteers did not take these dogs, they would be either euthanized or sold
to slaughterhouses.
There are many people in China and South Korea who rescue dogs besides Xioli and Mr. Kwon.
Plush Bear shelter is located over 900 miles north of Beijing and they take all breeds and other animals
rescued from slaughterhouses. https://www.plushbearsshelter.org/. One US Golden Retriever rescue
group has recently started working with a man from New York who also has a boarding facility. I
know of volunteers in Beijing who rescue dogs from local shelters and care for them until they can,
with the assistance of volunteers in the US, be sent to a rescue group in the US. One will also find
Americans, Canadians and western Europeans living in these countries who have joined the volunteer
effort after witnessing firsthand what the animals are subjected to. These young people in these Asian
countries (and other countries like Turkey and Mexico) are true heroes. They are working to change
centuries old customs but they cannot do it by themselves.
One of the first questions people ask me is how did the dogs get to Asia? Some traveled with people
relocating there or moving back home but most were bred there from dogs purchased from breeders in
other countries including the US. Their next question often is how could breeders do that? That’s a
question I don’t have an answer to because I can’t imagine sending a dog off to a country where dogs
are consumed as food. How can a breeder be responsible for these puppies living so far away?
Where will those puppies end up? Check this video out and you’ll see how some puppies are sold in
China: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgzWoLFc6us
I need to dispel the often used argument that by rescuing these dogs we are creating a market for the
breeders. It may seem like a lot of dogs are taken by rescue groups from these countries but the 100 or
so Goldens and those other breeds who are fortunate enough to be rescued are not even a drop in the
bucket compared to the 10+ million who are slaughtered every year. Additionally, I’ll repeat it – no
money is paid for these dogs. Hence, no market.
EGRR was actually late in getting involved in international rescue efforts. Rescue groups in southern
California started bringing dogs in from Taiwan in about 2008 and many groups and countries have
been added to the list since then. As a result, we were able to learn by their experiences. So why
have we gotten involved? I have tried to explain it before but I’ve come to realize that if you don’t
have a rescue mentality – or more accurately, rescue in your heart, you won’t understand.
These dogs are members of a breed that we all love and their future is certain death without us. We
The Golden West Page 11 The Golden West
have the resources (financial and adopters), the means (non-stop flights and volunteers in the countries), a
commitment to the breed and the vision to see that we’re helping to change the future. 30 years ago a
healthy Golden in a shelter in our area would be euthanized after a short period of time unless rescue took
him. Now, local shelters have their own foster homes and can easily adopt out a Golden of almost any
age. Imagine what changes in these countries we can be part of over the next 30 years. I checked with a
contact in Taiwan and they are not getting very many Goldens anymore.
Already we’re seeing change in just 10 years! Margaret Mead said “Never doubt that a small group of
thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” I believe
that is what is happening in these countries.
As I mentioned, the importing of rescue Golden Retrievers has been going on for over 10 years now. All
of the rescue programs involved work with multiple veterinarians often including their state vet. I spoke
with many program presidents about their experiences and consulted with several veterinarians including
Dr. Brian Joseph, the Washington State Vet. Additionally, I had an open, educational and non-judgmental
conversation with Ane Brusendorff as I wanted to know what the breed club members/breeders concerns
were. She explained to me the concern about Brucellosis and as a result of our conversation our dogs are
tested for it even though it is not required by the CDC, USDA or Washington state.
Communication is very open and prolific among the many GR Rescue groups involved with importing
dogs and they all are working very hard to insure that the dogs arrive healthy. Because of my discussion
with Ane along with the support of a rescue group in the Midwest, all of Xioli’s dogs are now being tested
for Brucellosis and vector borne diseases in China. Mr. Kwon is doing the same. The canine flu vaccine
is not available in China but it is in Korea and all dogs receive it. Mr. Kwon’s dogs are also tested for
Parvo and Distemper. The dogs are held for several months or longer in their country of origin during
which time they are vaccinated and their medical needs are addressed. We are one of a few programs who
quarantine the dogs after their arrival for two weeks to prevent the spread of Bordatella or the Canine Flu
should they come down with it. To date, none have but we will continue with this policy.
I read and take seriously the articles about dogs being brought into the US with Canine Flu or Distemper.
In October 2018, a 12 week old Sheltie arrived in New York and a 12 week old Beagle arrived in western
Canada – both from Korea and both had Distemper. One was mentioned as possibly having been a rescue
dog. The youngest age a rescue dog can be to legally travel to the US is 4 months and that is only under
very limited conditions. Our dogs do not travel until they are at least 6 months of age. Additionally, if
you read to the bottom of this article in the Washington Post about the Beagle, https://
www.washingtonpost.com/science/2019/03/27/want-rescue-dog-overseas-it-might-carry-new-strain-
disease-researchers-say/ you will see that they are not at all entirely certain he was a rescue dog. Addi-
tionally, the HSI estimates that more than 200,000 puppies are purchased on-line from puppy mills around
the world and shipped to the US annually. Because these dogs are purchased on-line, the only vaccination
they need is rabies. Incidentally, after reading about the Sheltie with Distemper, I contacted one of the
main manufacturers of the Distemper vaccine in the US and was told that their vaccine would cover the
strain of Distemper prevalent in Korea.
The Golden West Page 12 The Golden West
I have to get something off my chest. I’ve noticed in the FB messages and other negative comments
we’ve received that none were polite and all had an argumentative tone to them. That I can actually
understand. What I can’t understand is not one person expressed a word of sympathy for the fate of
these dogs. I have asked other rescue programs and they’ve noticed the same thing. Lots of vitriol and
no sympathy.
To use a common analogy, the genie is out of the bottle and there’s no putting it back. International
rescue efforts will continue with or without our assistance or approval. The temperament of these dogs
is almost universally wonderful – so wonderful that many rescue programs have adopters applying only
for an international dog. These dogs are, after all, Golden Retrievers just like your own only they were
unlucky in where they were born. Look at your dogs and then imagine them being bludgeoned to
death. Then you have a choice regarding the issue of importation – you can ignore the topic, you can
argue and/or actively work against it or you can support groups like EGRR who are working hard to do
it in the safest way possible while at the same time, trying to educate groups who are not. Choose wise-
ly.
