Sticks and Stones Advisor Guide You Should Have: 1) A Guide for the Square, X, and Cobra weaves 2) 15-20 Tongue Depressors/Craft sticks per participant a. Ideally, each group member should have a different color Instructions: 1) Split up NCSYers into group of 4-6 with an advisor or two to facilitate and help with the activity. One advisor should present the scenarios, while the other should help the role- plays/conversations get started and keep them going. 2) Each NCSYer should choose a color, and receive 3 sticks to start off with. 3) Explain that they earn more sticks by providing examples of positive verbal interactions-each PVI is worth 1 stick. You’ll be the judge of what’s considered positive- a. Positive Verbal Interactions (PVI) should contain positive words and positive messages. “That’s not so stupid” does not count as a positive statement. 4) Use the provided list of scenarios (see below) as prompts for them to begin earning sticks and sharing PVI’s. It is recommended to set it up as a role-play/FREEZE game so that they become conversations with multiple opportunities for PVI’s, instead of one-and-dones. 5) Be sure to give them sticks for PVI’s while building the stick bombs, or when coming up with other PVI’s! 6) The teens can decide which weave to use for their bombs-the cobra is harder but more powerful, while the square is much easier but less powerful when set off. Debrief: Right before setting off the bomb, gather the team in for a debrief. A successful format for a debrief is WHAT à SO WHAT à NOW WHAT. Validate the responses you receive by succinctly repeating the idea; keep everyone involved by asking group members to repeat ideas or comment on suggestions. 1) What-What did we do? Keep it simple, very basic-we earned sticks by coming up with PVI’s while responding to fake scenarios and building our bomb. If it was hard in the beginning, or it exploded a couple of times too early, or they figured out to use teamwork to stop it from exploding-that’s all great, and should be mentioned in this step, but it won’t be the focus of your debrief. 2) So What-What happened during the activity; what did you notice while we were coming up with PVI’s. This is where you push the teens to go a little deeper-rather than just reporting on the facts of what happened, you’re asking them to make a statement about what was going on internally or behind the scenes, so you may have to give them a little more time to come up with responses. In this activity, we’re looking for comments relating either to coming up with PVI’s for the scenario (it was hard for me; some scenarios were easier than others; I noticed that we started using PVI’s in real life while working on them for the scenarios; person A was really creative in coming up with PVI’s). Spend some time on this step, reflecting on responses and pushing for a little bit more thought with each one (some scenarios were easier than others-did other people feel the same way (validation)? Why do you think that was? What type was easy
