The Kremlin and Red Square (1156 - 1850) Moscow, Russia.Built as a residence for Ivan I, the Kremlin was the official residence of the Tzars until the 1917 Russian Revolution. Today, it is the President’s office. The Kremlin is a unique monument of Russian culture and a symbol of Russia. In front of the Kremlin is Red Square. Red Square is the central square of all Russia. The name of Red Square does not come from the red bricks, but from the Russian word «красная» means "red" or "beautiful" (an older meaning) and was used to express the beauty of the nearby St. Basil’s Cathedral.

St.Bazil’s Cathedral. The Cathedral was built in the 1550s to commemorate Ivan the Terrible's capture of the stronghold of Kazan. Not very large, the cathedral consists of nine chapels built on one foundation. The cupola roofs are all different from each other. Inside the cathedral, the walls are decorated with paintings and frescoes of the 16th to 19th centuries. The legend says Ivan the Terrible had the architect, Postnik Yakovlev, who designed St. Basil’s. He was blinded so he would never design such a beauty for anyone else. Now St. Basil’s is a symbol of Russian culture. It is used as a museum and a church.
