‘30,000 feet view’: The big picture of Dalal Street

Dear Valued Investor,

Good Morning & Welcome to Wednesday’s trading action at Dalal Street, dated 13th June

2018.

The positive takeaway from Tuesday trading session was that Dalal Street took US-North

Korea summit outcome in its stride. The joint text signed by Trump and Kim, committed to

"complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula.

This Wednesday morning, SGX Nifty is seen trading tentatively subdued after the annual

consumer inflation rose to 4.87% in May as compared to 4.58 per cent in April.

Focus now shifts away from Trump-Kim summit to the three central bank

meetings slated in next three days.

1. The Federal Reserve is expected to raise interest rates when its two-day meeting

concludes on Wednesday.

2. The European Central Bank policy makers are expected to announce the timing of a

reduction of its crisis-era asset-purchase initiative on Thursday.

3. On June 15, Bank of Japan holds monetary policy meeting.

Amongst key domestic macro watch:

• On June 14th, the Indian government will announce inflation data of WPI for May

2018.

What Technical Tells Us on Nifty: CTRL Z function was into play in yesterday’s trade at

Dalal Street; as the benchmark Nifty reversed all its Monday’s losses. (Ctrl+Z: undo the

object deletion).

Nifty’s spectacular come back indicates strength and is eye-popping. We say so because,

investors did not resort to ‘buy the rumor, sell the fact’ after Trump-Kim summit.

The BSE Mid-Cap index recovered yesterday, up +0.84%. The BSE Small-Cap Index too

recovered by 0.65%. Both the indices outperformed Sensex in Tuesday’s trade.

Technically speaking, Nifty is likely to consolidate with downside well supported at 10,761-

10,777 zone and then at 10,585. Buying on any corrective declines should be the preferred

trading strategy. Immediate upside targets on Nifty now seen at 10911 and then at 11000

mark.

The technical landscape will worsen only if Nifty slips below the 10327 mark as that would

open the door to massive technical selling, possibly quickly to the 10000-10050 zone.

The price action for Nifty is suggesting that we are likely to see a 10,550-11100 range in

near term with positive bias. Hence, establishing long positions with strict stop below

10501 should be the preferred trading strategy for the day.

Outlook for Wednesday: BUY ON CORRECTIVE DECLINES.

Judging by early trends at SGX Nifty, it appears that it will be a relatively quiet day for our

stock markets. Investors’ would prefer to stay sidelines and be reluctant to make any big

moves ahead of two central bank meetings. Meanwhile, Wall Street ended Tuesday’s

session absolutely flat, struggling for direction.

Now, before we get into detail; let’s look at major instruments.

Technical Strategy

‘30,000 feet view’: The big picture of Dalal Street

Our call of the day says the benchmark Nifty may consolidate its recent gains. Any sharp

corrective declines should be well supported at 10,761-10,777 zone. Aggressive buying

recommended only above Nifty 10,875 mark.

Commodity Cues:

A. In commodities, Crude -oil prices inched up on Tuesday, despite rising Russian

production and U.S. drilling activity creeping to its highest in more than three years.

All anxious eyes now turn to OPEC’s next meeting on June 22 in Vienna.

In India, Asia's No.2 buyer, May fuel demand rose by 3.4% compared with the same

month last year, data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the

oil ministry showed on Monday.

Currencies & Bonds:

• The yield on the U.S benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell 1 basis point to 2.92%.

• The U.S. dollar was seen struggling for direction at 93.57 on Tuesday, even as

inflation data came in at a level supportive of an imminent Federal Reserve rate hike

at Wednesday’s meeting, and the U.S. and North Korea signed a historic

denuclearization deal.

• Euro was seen drifting in Tuesday’s trade as attention shifts on the European Central

Bank that is likely to provide guidance this week on how it plans to wind down its

quantitative easing program.

• In Tuesday’s trade, the USD/INR gained 5 paise amidst value buying.

Macro Watch:

• This June 14th, the Indian government will announce inflation data of WPI for May

2018.

• Today late in the evening, the US Federal Reserve ends a two-day meeting with a

decision on interest rates and a statement on the economy. The central bank is

widely expected to raise its target for short term interest rate for the second time

this year. The Federal Reserve left its target range for the federal funds rate steady

at 1.5-1.75% during its May 2018 meeting, in line with market expectations.

• Rain seen progressing in parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka - IMD

• The key takeaway from RBI’s MPC’s policy meet outcome: RBI’s ‘neutral’ stance

and most importantly RBI’s maintaining GDP growth target for FY19 at 7.4%. The

key positive takeaway was that the stance was neutral, which indicates a dovish

tone.

Long story short: The street seems to have already factored the repo rate hike, and

that’s good news for bulls camp.

• On June 14, the ECB Governing Council meeting will be followed by interest rate

announcement.

• On June 15, Bank of Japan holds monetary policy meeting.

Stocks To Watch:

• Our chart of the day suggests establishing long positions in stocks like BAJAJ

AUTO, BHARAT FINANCIAL and ADANI PORTS.

• Bullish stocks: INDUSIND BANK, TECH MAHINDRA, CAPITAL FIRST, JUBILANT

FOODS, MARICO, TVS MORORS, MCDOWELL, L&T FINANCIAL, BAJAJ FINANCE,

JSW STEEL, HINDALCO, M&M, MARUTI.

Market Summary:

CTRL Z function was into play in yesterday’s trade at Dalal Street; as the benchmark Nifty reversed

announce the timing of a reduction of its crisis-era asset-purchase initiative on Thursday.
