BRAIN AND NERVOUS SYSTEM
You will learn
The main sections of the brain, where they are and their functions
The brain can change it “rewires” itself
Healthy habits for the brain, diet is key!
FUN FACTS
Average brain is 3 pounds
2% of body weight, yet uses 20% of oxygen supply and gets 20% blood flow.

Types of Neurons (Text Pg.279) Sensory Neurons – environmental
information collected by sense organs
Interneurons – Located in the Brain & Spinal Cord, collect impulses from and send impulses to your body
Motor Neurons – send nerve impulses to muscles and glands
Neurotransmitters
Dopamine: Pleasure and Reward
Serotonin: Mood, Sleep, Perception & Apetite
Acetylcholine: Muscle Contraction
GABA: Motor Control
Glutamate: Learning and Memory
Brain Stem –Breathing and blood pressure
Limbic System -emotion, behavior, long term memory. (Animal part of brain)
Limbic System inside the brain
Frontal lobe - reasoning, planning, parts of speech and problem solving. (All decisions are made here)
Occipital lobe - Concerned with many aspects of vision
Parietal lobe- perception of stimuli related to touch, pressure, temperature, and pain.
Temporal lobe - recognition and stimulation of auditory stimuli (hearing) and memory (hippocampus)
Cerebellum
Cerebellum-coordination, smooth movements of the skeletal system.
Concussion: Concussion 101
