Young Artists and
Authors Showcase
• The Young Artists and Authors Showcase (YAAS) is an annual contest that encourages youth worldwide to express the mission of Sister Cities International through original artwork, literature, and photography.
• Submissions are centered around an annual theme and judged based on originality, composition, and theme interpretation.
• Monetary prizes are available at the local and International level. Local winners will be recognized by the Mayor at City Council. After the International finalists for art, literature, and photography have
been announced, their works are displayed in Sister Cities around the U.S. in a year-long tour.

Guidelines
How to Enter
Students should send their art and/or literature, along with their corresponding completed
entry form, to the Sister Cities of Long Beach by emailing [email protected]. Visit sistercities.org/YAAS to download and
complete the entry form.
Fees
• There is NO fee to submit an entry to YAAS.
• If the student or Sister City program wants
their artwork returned, there is a $25 fee per art
piece.
Eligibility
• Art and literature: Student must be
13-18 years old
• Photography: Student must be 13-22
years old

• Art must be two-dimensional,
unframed, and no larger than
24 in x 36 in or 61 cm x 91.5 cm
• One [1] piece of artwork will be
accepted from each U.S.
member community and one [1]

2020 YAAS Photographer Entry Form
The 2020 Young Artists and Authors theme, “One World: Out of Many, We are One,” asks students to explore how citizen diplomacy can create peace through people-to-people interaction and address global challenges of- social unity and peace- in the 21st century. How does international experience affect an individual or community’s ability to adapt? What are some examples/illustrations of coming together and celebrating our humanity?
Guidelines for Submission
• Students should submit original photography through Instagram and must include the following in their caption: o Tag @SisterCitiesInt o Use the hashtag #YAAS2020 o Include the city, state, and country where the student is from
• Students must save the original photo and send to Sister Cities International by emailing [email protected] or sending to the mailing address below.
• Please check all eligibility requirements before submitting at http://sistercities.org/YAAS • All photos must be posted to Instagram by APRIL 3, 2020.
Judging and Awards
• All winning and finalist entries will be announced and published to the Sister Cities International website. • One (1) photographer will be selected as the Grand Prize Winner and will be awarded $1,000 by check. • Five (5) U.S. finalists and five (5) international finalists will be selected. • After the conference, the artwork will go on a tour to select cities across the U.S. • For more information, please visit http://sistercities.org/YAAS.

Photographer Waiver
By submitting this form, I agree to give Sister Cities International, its members, and affiliates permission to publish and display the submitted entry at public exhibits, online, in publications, and/or in promotional materials at their discretion. I agree to abide by all rules and terms of YAAS and agree to waive all claims of any kind against the showcase organizers.
Sister Cities International will retain perpetual, non-exclusive rights to use submitted artwork in any communications with no compensation other than credit with the artist’s name and community.

Annual Young Artists Showcase Guidelines
2020 Theme- One World: Out of Many, We are One Sister Cities International aims to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation – one individual, one community at a time. This year’s theme is One World: Out of Many, We are One. This year’s theme asks students to explore these questions by highlighting citizen diplomacy and creative ways that we create peace through people-to-people interaction. How can internationally engaged future leaders help communities respond to the various global challenges of the 21st century? In what ways does international experience (not just limited to travel abroad) affect an individual or community’s ability to adapt? What are some examples/illustrations of coming together and celebrating our humanity?
MEDIUM & SPECIFICATIONS • One (1) piece of artwork will be accepted from each U.S. member community and one (1) from each of their sister cities. Members with multiple entries
are encouraged to form their own local competitions and submit the winner to Sister Cities International’s national competition. • All media is encouraged except for photography. Please submit all photography through the photography challenge.
◊ Ex. Oil paint, acrylic paint, watercolor, charcoal, colored pencil, crayon, ink, marker, etching, collage, and more! • Only two-dimensional (2D), unframed artwork will be accepted. All entries must be supported by matting if applicable. • Dimensions of the art and matting must not exceed 24 in. x 36 in. (61 cm. x 91 cm.).
AAWARDS • All artists’ work will be published to Sister Cities International’s website • One (1) U.S. artist and one (1) international artist will be selected as Grand Prize Winners. • Each Grand Prize Winner will receive $1,000 cash! • Five (5) U.S. and five (5) international finalists will be selected. • After the conference, the artwork will go on a tour to select cities across the U.S.
There is NO FEE to enter the Young Artists Showcase.
The return fee is $25.00 per piece of art (only if the artist/program would like the art returned).

Students must be between 13 and 18 years of age at the time of the 2018 deadline. The student must be affiliated with a dues-paying member of Sister Cities International or an international community with a dues paying sister city. All entries must meet the criteria listed above, or will be ineligible and returned to the artist. All entries must conform to Sister Cities International’s policy on plagiarism found at sistercities.org/YAAS. Individual entries should be sent to your local sister city organization. Contact your local sister city representative for local deadlines. All final entries must be submitted with a completed entry form postmarked by APRIL 3, 2020.

Sister Cities International aims to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation – one individual, one community at a time. This year’s theme, “One World: Out of Many, We are One,” highlights the importance of citizen diplomacy and the innovative ways citizen diplomats achieve peace through people-to-people interaction.
Authors are encouraged to draw inspiration from their experiences with sister cities, travel, exchange, international friendships, and the many ways that people cultivate relationships across cultures.
CATEGORIES & SPECIFICATIONS
• Categories: Essay or Poetry. • Essays are not to exceed 500 words, poetry is not to exceed
200 words. • Entries must be submitted in English • Judges will evaluate entries based on theme interpretation,
composition, and grammar. • All work must be original and inspired by the theme. • All submissions must be emailed to [email protected] by the
April 3, 2020 deadline.
ELIGIBILITY

• The student must be affiliated with a dues-paying member of Sister Cities International or an international community that is sister cities with a member.
