A fest that excited allHundreds flocked to Jeejee-

bhoy Ground, The Bishop’s School to partake in the

two days of fun games, activities organised for The Bishop’s Fest.

The three-day fest, organised by Sakal Media Group, in asso-ciation with The Bishop’s School, as part of the school’s sesquicen-tennial celebrations, was inaugu-rated by the Principal and CEO of the institution, Frank Freese.

Freese inau-gurated the fest by releasing balloons in the air.

“This festival will definitely attract lot of children and people from across the city. All the ses-quicentennial events have been successful so far. I am happy to be working with Sakal Media Group. The event has been

well-organised, right from the entry to the security of children in the ground,” said Freese.

The excitement among the students, their parents and relatives was palpable as they started gathering at the ground, much before the scheduled time.

The fest hosted an array of games that children enjoyed

including ‘magnetic dart game’, ‘ring game’, ‘bucket the ball’ and more. Sev-eral children flocked to stalls to get done tattoos,

hair beading and face painting. A special donkey show and a musical magic show were also organised. The little ones en-joyed the fun rides at the ground. Clowns and cartoon characters moved around the field enter-taining the visitors.

Exhausted after participating in games, people flocked to the food arena to indulge in various delicacies. A gourmet finish to the fantastic and entertaining evening!

The event was a lot of fun and everyone enjoyed it — including students, parents and teacher. The best part was that it was organised on the occasion of Children’s Day.

Sunny left his friends at the railway station and went home. At night, he heard the sound of the gate creaking. Sunny looked out of his win-dow. He saw a man had finished digging a pit in the garden and was

now filling it with stones. Something sparkled amidst the stones.Sunny was puzzled. ‘What was the man up to? Was he the gardener?

But, shouldn’t he be at his house? It’s too late,’ Sunny thought hard.‘I better call over the four tomorrow,’ he decided.Next morning Sunny called Clever, Shady, Flopsy and Mopsy and asked

them to come over. When he finished retelling the incident, everyone looked puzzled.

‘If the man was gardener, then what was he doing at Sunny’s house so late in the night..’

‘Let’s look for foot prints. What say?’ Sunny asked. The others agreed. In the garden, they saw many footprints — coming, and going — all

muddled. But Sunny spotted the gardener’s footprints. ‘It was him last night,’ Sun-

ny looked at them decisively.’‘But what made the stones shine,’ began Clever, but was cut short by

Sunny again.‘I know,’ said Sunny with suppressed excitement. ‘What? Tell us, quick,’ they squealed. ‘You will have to wait! Let me speak with the Chief first,’ Sunny grinned.Clever was a little disappointed, ‘Sunny, I wish I had cracked this case

first. My name is Clever after all.’Sunny patted her kindly, ‘One day you will surely.’Just then Sunny’s mother came out of the house bearing a tray of cup-

cakes.‘I am sure all of you are hungry. I have baked cupcakes and there is

some orange juice in the kitchen,’ she smiled. ‘Sunny, please go and bring the juice and some dog biscuits for Sandy too.’

‘Woof,’ said Sandy.

snaKes and LaddersThis Indian board game is a popular classic. The game is played between two or more players on a game board having numbered squares with ladders and snakes pictured on the board. The player rolls the dice to move from the bottom square and aims to finish at the last top square. He is aided or stalled by ladders and snakes respectively. The game was initially developed with the purpose of imparting moral lessons, where the board represents life’s journey with ups and downs.

All Games IndianMany popular games, indoor and outdoor, have originated in India. Over the years, they have evolved into the modern games that are now played in several countries. Pradnya Naik tracks down their history and evolution

LUdo

We all love to play board games, when we spend time indoors, don’t we? Ludo is one of the favoured board game. Did you know that ludo is a simplified version of the Indian board game, Pachisi? Pachisi was played by the Indian kings around the 6th century before its variations made it to England.

In ludo, the players have to move their tokens from start to finish with the help of the dice. The game is popular in many countries, under various names.

Kabaddi first originated in South India and then spread to other countries like Japan and Iran. Kabaddi is the national game of Bangladesh and Nepal. It is also the state game of the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Punjab.

cHessChess has seen its popularity rise in India in recent times because of Vish-wanathan Anand. However, the game originated in the 6th century AD India. Chaturanga, precursor of chess, was first developed in the Gupta Empire, in India. In the 7th century, it was adopted as shatranj in parts of Persia, and was later brought to Europe. The queen and bishop remained relatively weak until 1500 AD. Over the years, the game has improvised slowly, developing into the modern day chess.

Jogging Jogging a day keeps the doctor away’, is to put a new spin on the age old proverb of ‘An apple a day..’ Jogging at slow pace, done consistently, increases physical fitness with less stress on the body as compared to fast running. One definition describes jogging as running slower than 6 miles per hour (10 km/h). Long distance running is a form of aerobic endurance training.

The term ‘jog’ originated in England in the mid-16th century. This usage soon became common throughout the British Empire.

In the United States, jogging was called ‘road-work’ when athletes in training, such as boxers, customarily ran several miles each day as part of their conditioning.

Jet skiing Those who have visited the beach state of Goa, must have surely seen people on water scooters or motor cycles racing and jumping up and down the tides. These water scooters are called jet skis. They are a highly maneuverable form of personal watercraft.

Strictly speaking, jet ski is the trademark name of a personal watercraft (PWC) produced by the Kawasaki Motor Company. But now the term has become a ge-neric name for all types of person-al watercraft.

It is part water skiing device and part speedboat, with a definite hint of motor cycle during operation. Instead of the traditional propeller or screw motor, this PWC uses an enclosed gas-powered motor to push water out in a jet stream.

Bound to get your adrenaline pumping, right? But don’t jet ski without wearing a life jacket/vest.

Javelin throwIt is a major Olympic sporting discipline and is an event of both the men’s decathlon and the women’s heptathlon. To put it simply, the javelin throw is a track and field event where the javelin, a spear of 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) in length, is thrown. The javelin thrower gains momentum by running within a pre-determined area.

Unlike other throwing events, javelin allows the competitor to build speed over a considerable distance. In addition to the core and upper body strength necessary to deliver the spear, javelin throwers benefit from the agility and athleticism typically as-sociated with running and jumping events.

The athletes share more physical char-acteristics with sprinters, although they still need the skill of heavier throwing athlete.

JudoA pin, joint lock or a choke — that’s all you need to do to overpower your opponent. These are all the attacking chops of the modern martial art, called judo. How many of you know that, judo in Japa-nese means ‘gentle way?’

Judo, also a combat and Olympic sport, was introduced in 1881 by Jigoro Kano. The idea was to defend himself from school bullies.

Judo’s most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the objective is to either throw or take down an opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue with a pin, or force an oppo-nent to submit with a joint lock or a choke.

Strikes and thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defenses are a part of judo, but only in pre-arranged forms, called kata.

The best lessons are learnt on the ground. Lessons of falling and standing

up again; Of failures and wins; individual merit and team excel-lence; a pat on the back and words of encouragement.

Time spent on the playing ground is time spent well! A statement that schools and PE teachers would echo. Sports or Physical Education period (PE) is necessary to keep the students fit. And, the sports tournaments bring out the best amongst students.

In a sports tournament, when teams are competing against each other to make the podium finish, the crucial factor is ‘team spirit.’ Team spirit is built by the players aided and encouraged by their coach.

Says Vinay Menon, PE teacher at Dona Leonar Memo-rial High School, “Team unity results with team interaction. I ask my students to participate in relays and lead up games like dribbling. This improves communication between them. They also go jogging and do regular warm up exercise which boosts their overall perfor-mance.”

Discipline too is necessary amongst players.

“Discipline is a value that is best emulated. In our school, junior players have the senior classes as their role model. This acts as incentive for the seniors who consider it as their responsibility to be on the best behaviour on the ground,” says Sainath Mankekar, PE Teacher

at Cambridge International School.

It’s also the coach’s job to spot the potential and groom the student/s to take charge and lead team to victory. This involves motivating the team,

whatever the result of the game, a player should not lower his confidence level and accept the result gracefully. That makes a sportsman, a ‘good sportsman’.

Sports tournaments bring out the best in the players. The crucial factor is ‘team spirit’, which is built by the team, encouraged by the coach. YB talks to the coaches and sports players on how they get the dynamics rightspiRit

focusing on the body language and communication.

Says Dhanaji Patil, PE Teacher at S B Patil Public School, Ravet, “It’s our responsibility to discover the liking and capability of each child. We get our cues from their body language. If a student holds his elbows close to his body while running, it indicates that he lacks in confidence. We try to set it right by encouraging him in the presence of other students. Often a pat on the back, makes him feel good and a change in his performance is seen.”

The culmination of any sport, is in one team winning, and the other losing. A loss is not some-thing that is welcomed by the players, but it’s important that the team stays united and treble their efforts to win the next time.

“I give a pep talk to the team

before they go and play. I tell them that they should give their 100 percent without thinking too much about winning or defeat. The words steer them in the right direction,” says Menon.

The onus also lies on the players to pull their weight. If a student isn’t co-operating, the coach and his team-mates have to bring it to his notice.

“The players need to under-stand each other’s strengths. But if a student thinks only for himself, then he needs to be substituted,” opines Rohit Kumar, a kabbadi player, studying in Std X in Santo Minguel High School.

Kho-kho player, Anurag Kumar adds, “Players who are not supporting their team should be mentored by seniors. They should be helped in adjustment issues. Their thinking, game and strategies need to be understood before dismissing them off.”

Psychologists and counselors also have an important role to play in this. Patil asks the sports counselor to step in when he finds a student/s not getting along with others.

“We speak with the student and find out if something is bothering him. If he has the ability, but is not a team-player, then we try him out for individual sports like long distance running. This approach has worked,” says Mankekar.

Thus victory is not scripted alone. The coach, his team and their families together raise the spirit.

Tears are streaming down my cheeks and there’ s a stitch in my sides. Oh

Calvin! Yup! I picked up this mag-

azine of Calvin And Hobbes and well, I have been laughing since then. I have been a big fan of the duo and pick up the newspaper just to read the comic strip. So when I saw this magazine in the bookstore, I immediately bought it.

Many hugs to Bill Watterson, who created this comic strip. I think Watterson just picked on my unknown side, which be-came Calvin. I am sure every-one else also gets the feeling

that Calvin is what they are, were or would like to be!

If you ask me to pick one favourite comic strip from the so many that Watterson created be-tween 1985-1995, then I simply can’t. If you ask me to pick 10 favourites, my reply remains the same. Calvin is phenom-enal. And, since he’s so much like us, you don’t want to be partial and just pick one, right? You would rather pick all!

But, yes, my favourites are the ones in which Calvin is fea-

tured with Susie and of course Rosalyn, his sitter. Rosalyn is a match for Calvin. I suspect Calvin admires her for that!

The British Library launched Read-ing Challenge on Children’s Day, November 14. This year’s theme

is Mythical Maze which challenges chil-dren aged 5-13 to find their way around a maze that introduces them to fantas-tical creatures from the world of legend and mythology.

The curtain-raiser for the event would be held on Sunday, December 7, between 11.30 am to 12.30 pm. It can be attended by parents and anybody interested in getting chil-dren to read books. Learn ideas and good techniques to help your child get a head start in life.

Reading Challenge

Bill Watterson, who stopped creating Calvin AndHobbes after 1995, is now back in public. His artwork, not him, to be more precise. Last week, he revealed a new 15-panel comic strip poster promoting the Angoulême International Comics Festival. The festival will be held from January 29 to February 1 in Angoulême, France. The publicity-shy artist won’t be attend-ing the event. The dialogue-free artwork doesn’t look like an extension of Calvin And Hobbes’ world. But for many fans, it’s enough that Watterson created the strip, which follows a balding, bath-robed newspaper sub-scriber, who just wants to read the funny pages.

Susie is the perfect counterfoil to his bratty and mischievous ways. Hobbes is the best friend that Calvin can wish for.

It’s a wonderful world in which a little boy has solution to every prob-lem, some that he has imagined. And, some that he has created.
