Hello, Giinagay, Hai,

Congratulations to everyone involved in our cross country at the

beach last Wednesday. A great time was had by all and there was

some outstanding athletic performances. This year there is a

change to the number of students going on to the next level. Only

the top 3 students will be going on to district at Bowraville and the

event is only for students turning 8 this year and over.

Next week all Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in the

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

from 15 to 22 May 2018 (see timetable over page). We have

conducted a range of preparation activities at school to get the

students ready for the new online format and please can you take

the time to reassure your children to think from a growth mindset.

Students with growth mindsets tackle challenges and think of

them as opportunities to demonstrate improvement. We wish all

Year 3 and 5 students great success in working their way through

the NAPLAN tests, and know they will do the school and

themselves proud.

Thanks to Mel Williams and to all the Mums and Dads helping in

the Green Canteen. Your hard work and contribution to the school

is invaluable. Our healthy menu is certainly something we should

be proud of. More volunteers are needed to help reduce the

workload.

Thanks to all the P&C committee and members. Your fundraising

commitments, time and energy is certainly appreciated. The

school community appreciates all your efforts.

Thanks to Janet Granek for her coordination of our Primary Ethics

class, helping children develop skills for life classes in our

school. The Kinder/1 students started last week thanks to Maree

Cooper for undertaking the two day training which allows us to

offer this extra class on Friday. We now have a Primary Ethics

program giving children the opportunity to discuss ethical issues

with their peers while developing important thinking, reasoning

and discussion skills.

Principal’s Column This Week’s Whale Awards and Class Academic Awards

Ethics in the infant years

Ethics classes in years K–2 focus on developing core skills such

as listening to others, taking turns to speak and giving reasons.

Stories, poems and rhymes prompt children to discuss ethical

issues such as hurting someone without meaning to, telling the

truth, being kind, forgiving, ownership, fairness and empathy. Our

skills-based topics for this age group include asking and

answering questions, disagreeing, changing your mind, working

out what is true, giving and evaluating reasons as well as giving

examples and counter examples. Logic is also introduced, with

topics touching on inductive inference and deductive reasoning.

Volunteer ethics teachers are needed to be able to offer this

course further to other classes. Experience is not required,

comprehensive training and access to lesson materials is

provided. Contact Janet Granek on ph: 0402 218882 if you are

interested.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mums and grandmas this week,

hope you have a wonderful day.

On Sunday 20 May we will be holding a Working Bee at school

from 10am to 12pm. A school working bee is arranged to get our

site looking its best. Please bring gloves, whipper snippers and

push mowers. More hands make light work.

Thanks, yaarri yaraang, terima kasih.

Students in 5/6 have had a great start to the term. They

have started developing their own digital portfolios using

Google sites. This will be a compilation of their learning

throughout the year that they will be able to share with their

families. They have also participated in collaborative

activities online using Padlet and Google Classroom.

Students have been learning about decimals, fractions and

percentages. They have also created their own block letter

initials by measuring dimensions then calculating the

interior angles. Students have created silhouette Anzac Day

art and perspective drawings.

Well done 5/6!

Scotts Head Food, Wine & Music Festival

African Dance Performance

On Sunday 22 April a very successful Scotts Head Food, Wine & Music

Festival was held in the Recreation area.

Scotts Head PS P&C had a stall with popcorn, a coin toss and chai tea.

We also had our Boomerang Bag on display.

Students also displayed their fabulous artwork at the Art Exhibition at

the Surf Club.

During the school holidays, 11 students from our school

performed a traditional African Kpanlogo dance at the

Scotts Head Festival with Mamata African Dance School (Bu

Bibi and Vinay) and the Nambucca Drummers, led by Erin

Winter. The students had been practising weekly for a

month and they all did their best and had a great time

dancing. The drummers had only one previous practice with

us and they rocked! We look forward to enjoying more

community arts collaborations with the creative people of

the Nambucca Valley.

Got It! Tip of the Week

Many parents find their child’s challenging behaviours hard to understand and

frustrating to manage. It is important to remember that children’s difficult

behaviour is a way of expressing their emotional and physical needs. It can

sometimes be tricky to know what your child is trying to communicate with his

behaviour, however thinking about the emotions behind the behaviour is a

great place to start. Emotions guide our actions, and being aware of our

feelings and the feelings of others helps us to handle our moods better,

bounce back from emotional events faster, be healthier, get along better with

people, and manage our behaviour better.

Got It! Newsletter Items for Parents & Families

Got It! is the school-based program that helps children who are struggling to manage their feelings

and behaviour that is currently in Scotts Head Public School. The program is being run by a local

child and adolescent health team in partnership with the school during terms 1 & 2. Each week

this term, the Got It! team will provide some tips in the school newsletter to support parents,

carers and teachers & to help children to develop some useful skills for managing their feelings

and behaviour. Alongside each tip we have included some resources that you may find useful.

Red Riding Robyn Hood

We all thoroughly enjoyed the

visiting performance on the last day

of Term 1 by Australian Playhouse.

They were very entertaining and

there were many laughs.
