Young Life is following a movement of the Holy Spirit to make an impact on a world of kids. By the end of 2016, Young Life will have doubled its reach, equipping 80,000 leaders in 8,000 ministry areas to meet two million kids every year — all for the purpose of introducing them to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in their faith. Young Life was made for them.

HUSTON’SSTORY

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down

one’s life for one’s friends.”

— John 15:13

AREA OVERVIEWThis is the 43rd year that Young Life has been operating in the West End of Richmond. Young Life has a presence in every high school and college in the area: Deep Run High School, Glen Allen High School, Mills E. Godwin High School, Douglas-Freeman High School, Hermitage High School, J.R. Tucker High School, and the University of Richmond. Also, a specialized ministry, Capernaum, has been developed to serve kids with disabilities. The purpose of Young Life Richmond West End is to help introduce high school and college students to Jesus in a fun, genuine and attractive way. Many students are not only introduced to Jesus through Young Life, but it is also a valuable tool that helps them grow in their faith! Young Life leaders invest countless hours in kids by walking alongside them and taking the time to really know them in their world. Through these relationships with a leader or a friend who is already involved, kids are invited to experience good, clean, meaningful fun in a variety of ways. Our hope is that through club, Campaigners and camp, kids would get a real glimpse of how attractive Jesus is! This past year, over 1,000 students attended a local club on a weekly basis, 487 attended a fall weekend, and 323 attended camp this summer. None of us are strangers to the challenges that adolescents face day in and day out. Being a kid is harder today than ever before. Young Life in the West End of Richmond has grown exponentially over the years, but there is still so much room for growth!

This past spring, after an incredible four years, I graduated from Hampden-Sydney College. As college drew to a close, I, like the rest of my peers, wasfaced with the daunting reality of the real world and what I would make of it. So, I began the classic career search — utilizing the career developmentoffice and my previous connections — but the whole process was very overwhelming. I knew that I wanted a great experience with opportunity forgrowth, but I felt a bit lost. During college I had become increasingly involved with Young Life, an experience that was meaningful and used my gifts, but I wasn’t sure if God wanted me there full-time. I wrestled with the prospects of my future for months, while also trying to figure out how to ask my girlfriend at the time, Megan, to marry me.

Initially, I decided that a career in Young Life was not right for me. In the coming month, I became engaged and continued going through the application and interview processes at various companies throughout the Richmond area. As the stresses of planning a wedding, finishing school and finding a jobincreased, the door to a career in Young Life opened, yet again. At the same time, doors to other job opportunities were closing one by one. Amazingly, I felt a certain peace about the direction God was leading. After seeking counsel from many close friends and mentors, I knew that this position on staffwith Young Life in the West End of Richmond was right where I needed to be. During a time of stress and pressure, I felt affirmed in my decision toaccept the offer from Young Life. Megan and I are thrilled to be a part of the impact that sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ is having on the lives ofstudents and families in Richmond.
