Lake Area SHOOTOUT MANY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO PARK CARS

Parking cars at the Shootout has become one of our Lodge’s largest fundraising projects. This is a great opportunity to raise funds and the more helpers we have, the more money we will raise. It takes a lot of volunteers to park all of the cars at Captain Ron’s.

So check your calendars and please sign up for at least one shift. (Shifts will be 4 or 5 hours de-pending on the assignment). We will need at least 90 volunteers. Please indicate if you are willing to work more than one shift. Please indicate if you have any physical limitations If you have another commitment (i.e. Sunday church) please indicate NO SUN The Shootout dates for parking cars this year are: FULL FULL Thursday, 8/22 Friday, 8/23 Saturday, 8/24 Sunday, 8/25 There are 3 ways to sign-up: Send an email to: Jacki Scarpino at fjscarpino@AOL,COM. (new email address) Call Jacki at 573-434-1043. (different phone number) Send Jacki a text at the above number and be sure to identify yourself in the text.

Please provide the following information:

-Name -phone number and/or email address -willing to work more than one shift -shirt size (M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL)

ATTENTION: At this writing, we are half way to our goal for volunteers. The deadline has been extended to July 10th. Please sign up, we need you! If you have not signed up or contacted Jacki, don’t assume you have been included and please don’t wait for a phone call to be asked.

Happy July to everyone! I want to thank everyone who has helped me through these hard times with the COVID-19 crisis. We have now started getting the lodge re-opened for meals and other activities starting in July. I’m sure you know it’s

been a very hard time for all of us in-cluding the local businesses and our Elks Lodge. I want to ask your help to

support and make sure our lodge stays financially viable. We need your help in a number of fronts. We have the Shootout at the end of August and again Frank and Jackie Scarpino have volunteered to lead the group for the Shootout. We need vol-unteers to be able to generate the money that the lodge needs. Our plan at this time is still also to have the golf tournament in September. So, if you can help at all please volunteer. You’ll notice in this month’s bulletin the dinners pricing is to be determined because of all the changes that have gone on the prices of meat and other items that we use we are not sure what our costs are going to be yet. When you call in to set your reservations feel free to ask what the pricing is going to be but it is going to be a work in progress as we learn what the new costs are. The Lady Elks are going to have their annual rummage sale in July and again we need your help please come out and either donate or come out for the sale and buy something from the Lady Elks. I’d like to remind everyone to please make sure that your dues have been paid we have a number of people who have not paid yet and we need the money since we have lost one of the casi-no trips this year and other fundraising due to the COVID-19. One other thing that I need help with is we need somebody to write grants for the Elks Lodge so we can generate the money from the National Elks Association. If anyone is interested please contact me as we are walking away from a lot of money that we could be getting from the national Elks Association if we had somebody to be able to tracking and writing grants. I want to thank you again for supporting the Elks and look forward to seeing you all back at dinners and other activities at the Elks Lodge soon.

Did you know the LOU DEMEYER MEMORIAL in front of the Lodge is available to all deceased members of the Lodge? If you would like to put the name of

As I write to you in mid June, I find myself still trying to figure out the “new” normal for our lives at the Elks Lodge and the rest of our community. I imagine you are feeling much the same and wondering how the Lady Elks will move forward.

Let me fill you in on the new and positive changes for our wonder-ful Lady Elk organization. There

are many new and different plans and events that we can all embrace in a positive and uplifting way. First of all the food service from the Lady Elks will be undergoing a major change. We will have Taco night July 8th as planned. After that we will not be going forward with two regular taco nights a month. We will instead be having special dinners on the 4th Wednesday that was Taco night. The pot luck dinners will be eliminated from the line up because of concerns for buffet style meal service. We will have several “special” dinner nights. During the Christmas holiday season we will have a holiday meal (perhaps reprising the much loved “soup night”). There will be a Dinner and a Movie night, an Italian night and many more fun and special dinner nights to look forward to. We were having a challenge recruiting volunteers to work all of the previous dinners and events. We are hoping that having fewer events and more volunteer power will result in a positive and forward thinking attitude. I know there are lots of changes in our Lady Elks I know that you will embrace them as we move forward in our changing world. We will continue to work with our Lodge and the Elks that work with us every day to make our Lodge a wonderful place to gather, socialize and “just hang out”. I really want to give a shout out to the hard working couple at the Lodge that have made it such a clean and welcoming space. Gina and her husband have done a wonderful job finding many nooks and crannies that have been neglected for years. If you did not know, they are cleaning the Lodge every day before any opening time or event. If you see them PLEASE thank them for the great job they are doing. Upcoming for our Lady Elks is the Rummage Sale! Yeah, we finally get to rid our closets of some “stuff”. The sale will be two days only this year, July 22 and 23. Sale time will be 9am to 6pm. Set up will begin July 20 at 8am and continue July 21 at 8am. Contact Linda Havel if you have questions or would like to help. Another change for our Lady Elks is we will NOT be sending Hillbilly Fair Raffle tickets in the mail to each member. The money that would have been spent on postage will be used to make up a “booze basket” that will be raffled off this fall. We did not know if the fair was even going to be held and this idea seemed the best way to still have an income from this event. If you have questions or concerns about the changes taking place please feel free to call, text or email me anytime. Phone: 573-692-0855, email: [email protected]. Please come to the Lady Elk meeting July 27th at 6:30pm. It is a good chance to relax and catch up with your fellow Lady Elks. Thank you for your continued support of our Lady Elks and our great Elks Lodge.

Born in Nebraska and raised on the Mississippi River, NANCY KUNKEL says she was her dad’s girl-boy. The oldest of two girls, Nancy says there was such an age difference between her and her sister it was as if her parents had two only children. Although she says she was an average student in school and not really great at math, Nancy went on to become an elementary teacher, 20 plus years, mainly 1st grade. She says she always knew she wanted to make school fun for students and that is just what she did. Nancy was awarded Math Teacher of the Year and was flown to Washington DC where she met the Vice-President and was awarded $10,000! Not bad for a girl who didn’t like math!! The project she had her math students do was related to “weights and measures.” The task was to discover if bubble gum weighed more chewed or unchewed. To do this the students had to weigh the gum before, provide a theory, chew the gum, rewrap it (same as it started out), weigh it and submit their findings. No wonder she was a favorite teacher. Nancy and Tom retired to South Dakota

on Lewis and Clark lake and were there for 11 years. They winter in Golf Shores Alabama and decided to find something half the distance away and moved to the Lake of the Ozarks in 2016. Even though she was close by in Nebraska, Nancy had never been to the lake. The couple has 3 children, the oldest girl is an Elementary Principal, their middle son is a Brigadier General in the Air Force and the youngest son owns a construction business. (NO – mom doesn’t have to salute when she sees her son). When it comes to hobbies Nancy said she always felt odd when people would ask because teaching was her passion and her hobby. But she does love to read and she and Tom have traveled all over the world. Traveling to all seven continents is on her bucket list and she has been to five – leaving Africa and Antarctica yet to visit. Her favorite place is Alaska. Her son was stationed there for many years and they would visit at least twice a year. Nancy has belonged to the Lady Elks for 4 years now and during that time has volunteered for the shoot-out, provides cakes for the Cake Walk and is always supplying us with wonderful desserts when needed. Make sure to say Hi to Nancy when you see her at the Lodge (and spit out your gum first)!

In these unprecedented times, donating blood is even more important. The Elks Blood Drive

is another great way to make a difference in our community. The American Red Cross has an urgent need for blood donations to pre-vent another blood shortage as hospitals resume surgical procedures and patient treat-ments that were temporarily paused earlier this spring in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In recent weeks, hospital demand for blood products has grown by 30%. The

American Red Cross will begin testing all blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibod-ies. The antibody test is authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to the coronavirus, regardless of whether they developed symptoms. Donating is quick and easy. The Red Cross has implemented new procedures and protocols to make sure donating is safe. The Red Cross staff is efficient and does an expert job of collecting the dona-tions. Please come and show how much you care. Culver's in Osage Beach has donated coupons for a pint of frozen custard for each pint of blood donated. So, give a pint and get a pint, and the next time you're in Culver's thank them for supporting our blood drive. See you on July 23rd at the Elks Lodge. Thanks, John Heather

One of the Special Ticketed events available at the Lady Elks Silent Auction was a

Royal High English Tea! This was a ticketed event that twenty

very special ladies attended. The event was hosted by Connie Pylar and Linda Ha-vel at Linda’s beautiful home. Food was served in the proper English presentation of three tier trays with Savories (sandwiches) on the bottom, Scones (with clotted cream and strawberry jam) on the middle and Sweets on the top. Also offered were four varieties of hot tea and two special “spiked’ ice teas served by the very “dapper” Dennis Havel and Stan Pylar. Anne Koepke won a beautiful quilted ta-ble runner handmade by Linda Havel and Judy Thrall won a second gift. All the Ladies were also treat-ed to a gift pack of handmade cards from Connie. The weather was great. The food was great. And, of course the company was exceptional. It was won-derful to all get together again. Thanks to all those who pur-chased tickets to sup-port the Silent Auc-tion and thanks to Connie & Linda for putting this together.

Frank was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He insists on saying it was a rainy day. Frank’s mother passed away when he was quite young. His upbringing was therefore left to his father and his two older sisters. He said his sisters were the ones that taught him to dance. He attended Saint Patrick Elementary and Saint Edwards High School in Cleveland. After high school, Frank attended Bowling Green University located in Bowling Green, Ohio. He later left college to take a position in the Parts Department at Electro-Motive Division of General Motors in LaGrange, Illinois. He was promoted

to Manager of International Locomotive Sales and was put in charge of sales in Eastern and Southeast Asia. His position re-quired extensive international travel to those areas. Frank enjoyed the international travel until it became unsafe to do so. When the United States bombed Libya, Frank felt the area to be

too volatile to safely travel for business. He had planned to resign from the company, but rather than lose Frank, the company offered him the same position in Central and South America. Frank continued working for the company until he retired in 1999. For a period of time, Frank worked a second job as a bartender at a racquet club, where he met his wife Jacki. Frank and Jacki dated for 18 years before getting married in 1999. During this period, Jacki used the time while Frank was traveling to future her education. She got her Master’s Degree in Business with a major in Health Care. Frank has

two adult children from a prior marriage. His son lives in Illinois and his daughter resides in Texas. Upon their marriage and Frank’s retirement, he and Jacki moved to the Lake in 1999. They became Elks when they joined our Lodge in 2002. Frank’s accomplishments at our Lodge are almost too extensive to list. He served as ER for Lodge 2705 in 2006 and again in 2017. He was West Central District Deputy (DDGER) 2008-2013. Frank was the State Drug Awareness Chairman from 2008-2013 and was selected as National Drug Awareness Chairman of the Year in 2012. He

was presented with the prestigious Crystal Elk Award. He recently donated this award to our Lodge and it is on display in our trophy case in the dining room. Starting in 2013, Frank began writing a monthly drug awareness article to the Grand Lodge Newsletter. Frank is a Board Member with the drug awareness programs ACT Missouri in Jefferson City, and Morgan County CLEAR. He and Jacki have been instrumental in helping with the planning and organization of the many Lodge fund raising casinos trips. They organized

the Tunica trips from 2007-2010 and Down-stream trips from 2010-2020. He and Jacki have also spearhead the Lodge’s participation with the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout from 2008-2020. They have, through a devotion of time and effort to our Lodge, helped to generate a conservative figure of $175,000 in fund raising revenues for the period 2006-2020 with these activities. The two of them embody the philosophy of giving of self to improve our Lodge and the community. On a somber note, Frank and Jacki are trading

the Ozark Mountains for the Florida Beaches. They are now purchasing a home in Ft My-ers Florida and will be moving at the end of July. They both admit, while they will be gone, Lodge 2705 will always remain in their hearts. They hope the traditions they helped to establish at our Lodge will continue to thrive. Thank you Frank and Jacki for all that you have done for our Lodge. We wish you all the best as you journey on with the next new chapter of life in Florida. You both will be missed.

We are honored to have Jane Cooper take on the leadership role of President. She has served as president in 2005-2006 & 2013-14. She has served on various committees and continues to give of her time and commitment to the Lady Elks. Vice-President: Lee Ann Vanderpool serving her first term. Will perform the duties of the President upon her absence. Secretary: Donna Bulmahn, serving her third term. She will continue to keep a record of all meetings and furnish the membership a copy at the meetings. She keeps our library In order. Coordinates the hat & mitten tree. She fulfills many positions, too numerous name. (not present) Treasurer: Linda Havel, having served before time. Will keep an accurate financial record of all the Lady Elks funds, providing a financial report at each meeting. Linda also chairs one of our biggest community projects, our Christmas Program. Chaplain: Karen Thornton, having served since: 2008, giving benedictions at each meeting. Sends cards as needed and in the event of the death of a member will conduct a memorial service. Kathy Graham has previously served as President and on various committees. She was installed as trustee and part of the Trustees, she will participate in review of all recommendations. A sincere thank you was given to the ladies who served on one or more Committees this past year. It is impossible without you. Lady Elks do appreciate the commitment of our offic-ers and our volunteers who serve tacos, chair dinners, organize fundraiser, assist in selecting scholarship winners, contribute time, money and effort for our Christmas program.

Tamara Jorstad, membership chair, conducted our installation of officers. Recognizing Past Lady Elk Presidents and presenting Connie with the Lady Elk of the Year recognition. Connie Pyler was our honored “Lady Elk of the Year”. None other could be more deserving. She became a Lady Elk member and jumped right in by filling the Presidential role when no volunteer step up. She had led the Silent Auction Team, and has already shared ideas for the coming year. She puts together beautiful raffle baskets to assist with the community service projects. She writes our monthly profile for the Lady Elk of the month. She and Linda Havel co-sponsored a High Tea as a successful fundraiser. She even assists the Elks in the counting of monies. She is the Lady who whenever there is a gap, she is there to fill it. Connie’s contributions have kept the Lady Elks Auxiliary alive during the rough spots. Please take a moment and thank her for her commitment to our Lodge.
