In this week’s Gospel, Jesus was invited to dine at the home of a leader of the Pharisees and his guests. As He watched the guests maneuver for the places of honor at the table, Jesus proceeded to tell them a parable. The first part of the parable addressed where to sit at the table: “do not recline in the place of honor.” He followed this with a lesson to the host regarding his guest list: “invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind because of their inability to repay you.”
It does seem strange that Jesus would concern Himself with the Pharisees’ etiquette and hospitality issues. What was the point He was really trying to make? We should note that Luke stresses that Jesus was telling them a parable. In this parable, Jesus is using the “secular” form of hospitality and etiquette to help us understand the “divine” form of hospitality and etiquette. Jesus told the host that he should not invite his friends, relatives, or wealthy neighbors, but rather those who are poor, crippled, lame, and blind. He is telling us that we are not called to serve the people who can offer us retribution, but rather those who have nothing to offer us in return. We are called to serve the poorest of the poor, the sickest of the sick, and the most disabled of the handicapped - not only the physically handicapped, but also the mentally, economically, socially, and spiritually handicapped. If a host only serves people who are able to repay him for his generosity and his hospitality, then he is only seeking honor and recompense. He is not truly serving his neighbor, only himself.
In the first part and throughout this parable, Jesus teaches his followers to strive for humility, both in our relationship with God and others. This virtue is the proper attitude of a true disciple. If we assume the place of the lowly instead of the place of honor - if we spend time sitting with the poor, the sick, the lonely and those in despair, we will be able to see life from their perspective. Only then will we be able to better serve their wants and needs. Only then will we be worthy to inherit the kingdom prepared for us - or in Jesus’ words “be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
Who in your community would you find the most difficult to invite into your home for a meal? Or invite into your life? Who would you find it most difficult to trade places with socially or economically?
As I move on to the next chapter in my life, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the parishioners of St. Columbkille Parish for their hospitality, support, and kindness. I hope I have helped you in your faith journey as much as you have helped me. Please know that I will always keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
May God bless you.
