Showcase: Your chance to inspire

The Skills Show is the largest skills and careers event, inspiring 80,000 visitors with huge range of career options alongside the WorldSkills UK Competition finals. WorldSkills UK competitors compete in over 55 skills at the highest level across five industry sectors, from aeronautical engineering and stonemasonry, to graphic design and butchery (see page 4 for a full list). This year, Showcases will bring the competitions to life for visitors, with experts and students demonstrating skills in an interactive and engaging format.

The Skills Show is inviting Competition Organising Partners, further education institutions, colleges and training organisations from across the country to be Showcase Providers.

SHOWCASE: YOuR CHANCE TO iNSPiRE

What are showcases?

• Interactive demonstrations of skills, carried out by students and experts.

• Engage and inspire visitors about skills.

• Make WorldSkills UK Competitions more accessible and relevant to visitors.

• Provide a point of contact for visitors to find out more information about a skill or competition.

NEW fOR 2016This year, almost every WorldSkills UK competition will have a Showcase directly alongside it. Embeddded within the competition space, Showcases help make the content of the competitions accessible, relevant and engaging to visitors.

NB: the term ‘skill’ refers to the skill/profession being demonstrated and competed in.

We will work closely with each chosen provider to develop their activity and ensure that the opportunity is maximised and content is as appropriate as possible. All Showcase Providers will be expected to:• Design and deliver content that demonstrates the knowledge and expertise involved

within your skill, including: o Bite-size demonstrations of excellence of your skill in practice (preferably with

commentary in order to engage a wide group at a time). o Interactive content to allow visitors to get hands-on experience of the skill. o Allow for Q&A from visitors, both during presentations and as side (one-on-one)

conversations.• Provide information for visitors (written and/or verbally) about how this particular skill is

important, how it relates to their lives, how it is used in different professions, how you can start a career in this skill, and where you can find further information.

• Promote the ethos of competitions and the industry.• Use a friendly, informative and helpful manner, to boost visitors’ understanding of the

skills shown in the competition through peer to peer information and advice. This is because learning from peers has been proven as the best way of engaging with visitors.

• Work cooperatively with the respective Competition Organising Partner, prior to and at the event, to ensure: o Your content is aligned with, and complementary to, the competition activity. o Design and include within your space a ‘be a judge’ activity whereby visitors can see

a few samples relating to the competition and work out which would win based on a basic scoring criteria.

• To attend the training and familiarisation session on the afternoon of Wednesday 16 November (minimum of one representative to attend).

• To set up your Showcase area by 6pm on Wednesday 16 November. • To occupy your space for the entirety of The Skills Show (9am-4pm on the 17 and 18

November and 10am-4pm on the 19 November), delivering your showcase to visitors throughout.
