May Fair Programme Design Competition

Children are invited to design the front cover of this year’s May Fair programme. Designs should depict something that you enjoy about the Fair and should fit in the square on the entry form. Drawings should be bold so that they can be photocopied and can be coloured in. Please do not use paints.

There will be two winners, one from Pre-Prep and one from Prep. Please remember to put your name and class on the entry form and hand it to School Reception by Friday 28th April. Instruction and entry forms can be downloaded here.

After competing alongside 63,000 children across the globe and successfully answering a variety of multiple choice problems, Joshua Chapman and Arthur Bole joined the top 3% highest scores in the Primary Maths Challenge and were invited to take part in the Bonus Round.

The Bonus Round took place in February and the results have just arrived. Both pupils did extremely well with Arthur even winning a Primary Mathematics Challenge Bronze Badge, a first for Yateley Manor!

Here is an example of a question pupils had to answer during the Bonus Round:

This year Gareth is seven times the age of his son Herbie. In six years’ time Gareth will be four times as old as Herbie. What is the difference between Gareth’s and Herbie’s ages this year?

No calculators allowed!

Very well done to both boys and, if you think you know the answer, please let us know!

Maths Success for Arthur and Joshua

Plans are well underway for our Annual May Fair on Saturday 20th May. This event is FYMS’ biggest fundraiser and is enjoyed by parents, staff, family and friends. There is always plenty to entertain all members of the family with stalls, bouncy castles, BBQ, candy floss, a plant stall and much more.

The May Fair cannot run without the help and support of staff and parents and there are lots of ways you can help. If you are able to volunteer to help run a stall, bake a (nut free) cake for the Tea Tent or donate plant pots or hanging baskets for the plant stall please email [email protected]. Look out for flyers and information via school bags.

Summer BallHave you booked your table for the FYMS Summer Ball to be held on Saturday 1st July 2017 on the Headmaster’s lawn. An excellent outside caterer has planned a delicious meal and there will also be a cheese table, a variety of entertainment and, of course, a fully stocked bar! Don’t miss out, get your booking in soon.

Booking forms can be downloaded here.

A few reminders about summer uniform:

Summer uniform for girls is the regulation summer dress with white socks.

Boys may wear grey shorts and grey short socks. If they would like to be in short sleeves then they will need to wear proper short sleeved shirts. Long sleeves rolled up are not acceptable, so children wearing long sleeves will have to keep them rolled down. Boys are also expected to wear their ties in school unless given specific permission by the class teacher to take them off; they are allowed to take them off when outside at break times.

Blazers should be worn as usual unless children have permission to take them off.

Pupils should not wear sports socks when in uniform .

Summer uniform is not compulsory until the second half of the summer term but may be worn earlier.

Our assumption is that children stay at Yateley Manor until the end of Year 8. The usual term’s notice (ie before Tuesday 25th April) is required if this is not the case.

It was an exciting morning full of interesting and thought-provoking speeches on a range of fascinating subjects. The children spoke with poise and confidence in front of a large audience; one that was an especially daunting audience as it was made up of their peers! All the speakers deserve many congratulations!

Below is a list of all twelve speakers and their chosen titles.

Sam Ballentine Is social media slowing or growing children’s development?

Ria Bose New technology and how it affects us

Ella Cox Should every child own a mobile phone?

Christian Denny Is the school system outdated?

Sarah Findell Is homework useful?

Maddy Hall Is Brexit the best opportunity for Britain?

Sam Rowe Wait times in A+E

Jodie Saunders Will robots destroy our future?

Gavin Simpson The only way to save the rhino is to mutilate it.

Dibra Thapa-Magar Why online education is equally beneficial to the traditional classroom mode of learning

Freya Upton The value of the sugar tax

Alex Yates Why is sleep important?

Please note that boys do not need to have their own cricket equipment for the cricket season. The school will provide all that is necessary. Many boys, however, do like their own equipment and this is up to parents.

The school white polo shirt is required for lessons and can be used for cricket, athletics and tennis. Trainers can be used for cricket matches, but must be mainly white. Proper cricket shoes are ideal but not compulsory.

Boys who are in an A or B team for cricket must wear the school cricket shirt for matches which is available from the school shop. White cricket trousers are also needed for A and B matches. No club kit is allowed in school matches. School cricket jumpers and cricket hats are also available from the school shop.

Yateley Manor YouTubeHave you visited our new YouTube Channel yet? Our Year 3 pupils have begun a series of great mini interviews and two are now on YouTube. The first is a chat with Alex Danson when she visited us and the second is with author and father of Reception pupils Lily and James, Martin Norbury. We are looking forward to seeing who will be the subject of their next interview! Check our channel here.

We would like to invite children in Years 4 to 7 to enter the Minimus 2017 Mythology competition.

The theme for Years 4 and 5 pupils is the Greek myth of Odysseus and the Cyclops.

The theme for Years 6 and 7 pupils is the Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone.

Children can choose to illustrate it using either:

1) Art eg. drawing, collage, painting, mosaic, craftwork etc. or

2) Creative writing (in English) eg. poem, play script, prose, retelling of the story in the 1st person, diary or journal….

Entries have to be the work of one pupil only. If your child would like to take part, get busy over the Easter holidays as entries need to be brought in to Mrs Butler on the first day of next term, Tuesday 25th April.

For an idea of what to do, feel free to have a look at past winners’ work at http://www.minimus-etc.co.uk/MiniMyth/MiniMyth_intro.htm

Minimus 2017 Mythology Competition

Hopefully, next term will bring us some warmer weather. During sunny weather we strongly recommend that all pupils take measures to protect themselves against exposure to the strong rays of the sun. Hats should be worn for sport or play and a good spread of colourless sun cream should be applied before the children come to school. Children may bring their own sunscreen to school in a named bottle inside a clear plastic bag. For children in Nursery to Year 4 these should be handed to their form tutor. Children in Years 5 to 8 should give them to Matron.

The school shop stocks a variety of hats. Please note that pupils will not be allowed in to school wearing the brightly coloured zinc sun cream favoured by cricketers!
