The latest easing of restrictions by the WA Government will allow parents/carers to be permitted to enter school grounds to drop off or pick up their children from Monday 8 th June. With the current restrictions in place, we have noticed an increase in student independence and less disruptions to the start of lessons at the beginning of the day. I would like to suggest that in the mornings, for parents/carers to refrain from coming to classrooms, allowing their children to continue their independence in preparing for the school day themselves. It is alarming the number of our students who are not taking care around the roads of Boyanup when transiting to and from school. There have been numerous reports of students stepping or riding in front of vehicles, not wearing helmets, riding down the middle of roads and playing on roads. As a school, we will continue to remind children of their responsibilities when they are near roads and cars. I would like to encourage our families to also have a conversation with your children about road safety and also ensure if riding a bike, they are wearing a helmet. There has been an increasing number of students arriving late to school on a regular basis. It should be reminded that classes commence at 8.40am and children need to be at school by this time. By arriving late, children are missing out on vital instructional time in literacy as our literacy blocks commence at the start of the day. National Simultaneous Storytime 2020 was a successful literary event held at our school on Wednesday. Our students joined over a million kids around the country participating in this event. The featured book was ‘Whitney and Britney - Chicken Divas’ written and illustrated by Australian author Lucinda Gifford. The children listened to the story being read by Emma Watkins, aka “Emma Wiggle” via e-boards in their classrooms. Some students watched an excellent AUSLAN version during their lessons with AUSLAN teacher Mrs O’Hara. The story inspired many creative activities throughout the school. What a fun filled day! Mr J. Positive Behaviour Support and You Can Do It!

Our YCDI focus for this fortnight is relationships. There are lots of elements that go into making a great friendship. While it is great to have friends who you enjoy being with, sometimes it can be hard to make a friend in the first place. Showing people that you are interested in them by asking questions and asking someone to play with you are both great ways to start up conversations, which can lead to making a new friend.

Congratulations to the Mighty Lit group for successfully completing Level 1 in the MiniLit Program! MiniLit (Meeting Initial Needs in Literacy) is an evidence-based program that is used to support some students in their early years of learning at our school. A certificate of completion and a canteen voucher for a milo and muffin was awarded to Grace, Hailey, Weylin, Chayse and Barry in recognition of their amazing work and persistence to always give things a go and be their best!

You can see from the smiling faces of the children and their Learning Support Education Assistant, Miss Crabtree, in the photo above how proud everyone is of the students’ hard work. Well done Mighty Lits!

On Wednesday, May 27 the students at Boyanup Primary School joined over a million children around Australia participating in National Simultaneous Storytime. This colourful and vibrant event is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 20th year, the event aims to promote the value of reading and literacy. The featured book was ‘Whitney and Britney Chicken Divas’ written and illustrated by Lucinda Gifford. The fun filled event was a great success!
