MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
Because our newsletter is written and submitted a month in advance to the publisher, we can’t foresee and include any COVID protocol changes.
January was an excellent month for temperatures and saw a surge in the use of the community ice rinks. I believe that all who attended were generally in compliance of COVID-19 restrictions and use of the rinks ran well during the month. All the volunteer Rink Ratz have been busy seven days a week. It sure was a test for them to keep the ice consistent, while also minimizing interruptions. Keep in mind that our volunteers are regularly employed or have family obligations during the day, so it’s a necessary evil to flood and sweep the ice during peak hours in the evening.
On occasion, we have had some major dumps of snow, and our equipment has come through strongly with only a few breakdowns. Cold weather can be hard on equipment, no matter what the age. Fortunately, we do have inside space, although not heated, to keep the wind chill meter to a minimum while the equipment sits idle. The DIY blue drum hot water flood system that sits on the back of our tractor has been one of the slickest additions to the ice maintenance. Between consistently sweeping and flooding with hot water, the surface has remained very smooth this season despite heavy usage! Hopefully, cold weather will allow us to keep skating to the end of March.
It is hard to comment on what the community association plans to achieve throughout the year while we are all at a standstill waiting for the days to return to normal. As restrictions have been added and removed, it is apparent that we have been able to adapt. Hopefully, we have provided some community support through our daycare and after school programs, as well as the outdoor ice surfaces at the facility.
Let’s look at some positives that have transpired, or will evolve, that are not governed by the social distancing protocols. One project was to close the gap between where the wood boards and the frost fence (safety wire) vertically meet at the rink. Depending on where you looked, there was a gap of as much as three inches, creating a puck hazard between the ice surfaces. The problem was brought to our attention by a concerned member. Thank you to Jay Clements from Capital Expenditures for sourcing materials and to the volunteer staff that were able to find a solution and quickly fix the problem.
Another issue that required attention this past fall was the overhead lighting focused on the rinks. We managed to salvage some of the light fixtures and to repair some wiring. These repairs gave us a temporary cure for this winter. The life cycle of these units is overdue. Who says incandescent light bulb anymore? LED is in! With the help of Etienne Bley, our Ways and Means board director, we have secured a grant for our outdoor lighting. The grant will allow us to upgrade to new, LED sourced light fixtures this year. We can also count on a large return on investment for electrical usage. To go from incandescent to LED lighting could see a reduction in wattage draw of up to 75%. This is an excellent green project for the centre.
Also, with applicable grants for life cycle repairs to the community centre, there is buzz that the main gymnasium roof can be replaced over the spring or summer. This improvement would see that indoor activities can continue for many years to come and avoid any costly repairs in the interim. Together, these changes support our mission statement, to facilitate a variety of fun programs and activities to encourage community involvement and volunteer opportunities.
A shout out to all our business supporters. Hoping all stay safe in the months to come!

Have you seen those little library boxes scattered throughout Deer Run? The story around these little libraries begins in 2009. As a tribute to his mother, who was a teacher, Todd Bohl built a model of a one room schoolhouse, filled it with books, and put it on a post in his front yard. His neighbors loved it, motivating him to build, and give away, several more. The following year Todd, with a friend and colleague Rick Brooks, founded the Little Free Library organization. Their stated mission is: “Little Free Library is a non-profit organization that inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world. To date they have over 100,000 little free libraries in over 100 countries. The motto is simple: Everyone is invited to take a book, leave a book”.
In Calgary, there are over 200 registered charter members, and in Deer Run there are five (plus one unregistered library). To use the Little Free Library designation, you do need to register with them, paying a nominal fee. Along with receiving the official charter sign with your library’s unique charter number, you will have access to valuable resources, and have the option to add your library to the world map. People use the map to find and use your library.
Over the next few months, we anticipate providing stories around the free little libraries in our community and information related to the construction of the structures.

Can You Recycle Clothing, Shoes, and Textiles?Yes! As you start your spring clean, don’t put textiles in the garbage! There are many ways to keep clothing, shoes, and textiles out of the City landfills.
•Donate usable clothing and shoes to local charities or drop-off charity bins near you. Be sure to contact them first to find out what types are accepted. If the charity bin is full, don’t leave it outside - only materials in the bins are accepted. Instead, hang onto your donation or take it to another bin.
•Recycle clothing and textiles for free at a City landfill, even if it’s damaged. Our ‘Throw ‘N’ Go’ accepts a variety of
YOUR CITY OF CALGARY
textiles including outerwear, shoes, reusable shopping bags, purses, backpacks, and more. Just make sure fabrics are clean and dry, and place items in a bag before dropping off. If you bring other garbage in your load, landfill charges will apply.
•Repurpose old cotton shirts by cutting them into rags for household chores, such as cleaning or automotive work. Textiles also make great projects and crafts, with many patterns available online: sew quilts from denim and flannel, handkerchiefs from old t-shirts, or cushion covers from curtains.
Not sure how to properly dispose of an item? Visit calgary.ca/whatgoeswhere for answers to hundreds of items.

My family and I have been calling Deer Run home for more than 14 years now. We enjoy the mature trees and endless green spaces, parks, and rivers that surround
the area. This is my fifth season helping with the rinks, and it is very satisfying to be part of a team that brings the experience of ice skating to families in the community.
We have been very fortunate this year that Mother Nature has been on our side, providing great weather for ice preparation. Thank you to all the fellow members of the Rink Ratz volunteers and to the Community Association for providing the tools and space that makes care of the rinks possible.

Is March coming in like a lamb or a lion? While I am writing this a month prior, this is typically a time of year with “Spring” in its step, although historically Calgary’s time of greatest snowfall. Who knows what this year will bring. Just one year ago we had but an inkling of what was about to beset us, noting it was March 17 when Alberta’s first COVID-19 related public health emergency was declared. So far, 2021 has proven to be another year of adversity as Albertans continue to meet those challenges head on, while reaching for hope on the horizon.
Legislative Session started on February 25 and we expect to be sitting until late May. The Provincial Budget will be tabled for debate in the weeks ahead, and I would ask that you call or email with any questions or concerns to ensure your voice is heard.
Top of mind has been vaccine rollout and distribution. Procurement of COVID-19 vaccines is Federal, so all provincial timelines are contingent on national supply. I would recommend keeping the following key words bookmarked for all COVID related information: COVID-19 info for Albertans | Alberta.ca. Currently Phases 1A and 1B are underway, representing those groups at highest risk. They include residents of congregate living facilities, professions that work in direct contact with exposure such as surgical units and residents over 75. Full roll-out will take months, but please know that public health officials are working diligently to ensure every Albertan wishing to be vaccinated will be accommodated. I have been asked by media if I will personally be seeking vaccination; yes, but only after those who are at highest risk, or those in higher risk frontline occupations, have their chance.
Over the next month, please watch for signs and social media, or sign up for our e-distribution list, as we call for registration for “virtual” town halls. I am missing my MLA Café’s (having hosted over 40 since I was elected), but one small blessing from COVID has been how many constituents have reached out saying, “this is the first time I have called my MLA”. I have ended by saying, “please don’t make it your last time”, so as always, I thank you for making the time to connect.
