Five Essential Technology Areas for Success in Digital Business
• Provide clinical information at the point of care.
• Coordinated care - not all the clinical data will be available within the Trust’s systems.
• Healthcare Is leaving the hospital (Wearables and Monitoring)
• Patient data will transcend organisational boundaries.
• Mobile is key enabler for breaking down boundaries between organisations.
• API management interoperability (FHIR) is a key enabler.
• Trusts needs to create an eco-system to address clinical needs.
• Trusts can’t do it all themselves -they need a sourcing strategy (AppFactory, MDM etc)
• Patient-Centred solutions.

What are Real Time Location Tracking Systems?
iBeacon Nearby Eddystone
Bluetooth low-energy (BLE) wireless technology creates an innovative way of providing location-based information and services to your smartphone or tablets.
Apps installed on your phone listen out for the signal transmitted by these beacons and respond accordingly when the phone comes into range.
• Works on iOS 5+, and Android 4.3+, Windows 8.1+
• Range of 50m - 100m. Can change pulse rate and proximities.
• BLE is a technology meant for transferring data. It consumes minuscule amounts of energy. BLE only supports low data rates; you can't stream audio or send large files with it. It needs to work with WiFi (or 4G) for data services.
• Beacons can be stuck on walls to create a ‘web’, much like cellphone towers, but to triangulate indoor positioning. New ultra-thin Beacons are like band aids and can be stuck onto assets like crash trolleys.
• Batteries need to replaced every 2-3 years, new ones will be powered by induction – no batteries!

Use cases for Beacons in Healthcare - 1
Automatic patient check in into reception area, then sub-waiting areas
Provide patients with maps and directions, wayfinding
Alert patients that they are ‘lost’ if necessary
Notify patients what the waiting time is in each relevant area
Inform patients of their changing pathways and upcoming interactions
Present patients with intelligent (non-allergenic) menu choices

Use cases for Beacons in Healthcare - 2
Provide links and prompts to collect experiential feedback
Link for patients to download a pre-populated PHR
As Dr walks to patient, pre-load tablet with correct EHR
Better patient identity verification
Track key medical devices such as O2 tanks and crash trollies
Proximity-enabled, automatic logon and logoff to EHR workstation

Use cases for Beacons in Healthcare - 3
HAI Audit – track which staff have been near an infected patient
Adherence – monitor use of handwashing stations by staff
Generate patient checklist on nurse’s tablet, at right time
Track key staff and link to Omnilocation to optimise scheduling
Support mobile device management; geofencing
Track cycle and process times to improve patient flow

Nirvana?A combination of Beacons, WiFi (possibly HaLow), RFID & Radio (for inpatients and outpatients)
• Indoor triangulation using combination of Beacons and WiFi
• RFID for use with items/ things
• Radio for areas of poor WiFicoverage
• Need to redesign processes, this can’t just be a bolt-on. Remember:
• Disney took 2 years to develop the technology
• Another 2 years to redesign processes
• Around 1,000 people• 18 months to roll it out
