University reunionSheffield indie heroes The Crookes are set to return to the place where they first got together for a triumphant homecoming gig. The local 4 piece, who are fresh from a stint of gigs in New York, are playing at the newly revamped Foundry on the 3rd October, where three of the members met whilst studying at the University of Shef-field. “We haven’t been on a night out there for several years so we’re really looking forward to going back and seeing how it’s changed,” they told us. Here’s new University of Sheffield Students Union (SU) president Ally Buckle and Head of Entertainments and Events Chris White outside the new entrance to The SU, moments after discovering an ancient treasure map during development of the new Foundry, Studio and Fusion.Spotted behind a false wall, the find, which appears to have been in situ even longer than The Union’s Highlander-like porters, features a faded but clearly discernible map of the award-winning Student’s Union which – incredibly - appears to predate the actual building by several centuries. Annotated with barely legible writing and what may be boxes for

some kind of treasure hunter to fill in with notes, it’s got SU experts - including Ally and Chris - scratching their heads.Unfortunately, the remarkable discovery crumbled into dust just seconds after this photograph was taken but we did manage to take a photograph, which potential Lara Crofts can view online via SU’s Nights Out Sheffield Facebook page. You hail from Canada, what was your childhood like?I was born and raised in a very small mountain town called Nelson in British Columbia in Canada. My parents always listened to loads of different types of music, funk, pop, disco but mostly rock n roll so I have always been around music. When I was about 7 or 8 years old I discovered rap music. Mainly Tupac and Biggie but I really loved more underground sounds and artists as well. My parents thought I was crazy because I wasn’t super into their style of music… and then when I discovered dance music they really thought I was crazy! I’d run around the house singing Fire Starter by Prodigy. Nelson is the greatest place on earth for me; it’s so beautiful and I feel so blessed to have grown up there. It’s located in between a few mountains and sits right along Kootenay Lake. I spent a lot of time outdoors growing up, lots of biking, camping, hiking, skiing, swimming etc. The people there are very laid back, I suppose many people call them ‘hippies’ but we just like our local produce.

How are you adjusting to London life?I love London. For what I want to do, I couldn’t be anywhere else in the world! There is so much culture and I can go out any night of the week and hear music that I’ve never heard before. It’s very inspiring.

Is there any particular track or DJ that inspired you to DJ?I didn’t discover the art of actual DJing with turntables until I was in my early teens, but I was always the kid making mix tapes to play at everyone’s birthday parties. I experienced my first all night ‘rave’ party when I was 13 and from that night fell in love with the culture. In Nelson the parties were very small but still had such a great vibe for me. I think it was when I began heavily listening to Jungle / Drum N Bass music. Specifically though tracks like Shy FX’s ‘Shake Ur Body’, ‘Original Nuttah’ and Dilinja’s ‘Live or Die’.

Who are your favourite up and coming artists?My favourite artists to look out for this year are Dismantle, Hannah Wants, Tessela, Friend Within, Doctor Jeep, Banks and Justin Jay.

What is it about the old school genre that you like? You don’t see many DJs these days putting out that kind of music anymore. I’d have to disagree with you there, as I feel like

loads of artists are heading back to that old school sound. For example, Disclosure’s music is heavily influenced by early garage and Chase & Status’ new single ‘Count On Me’ is an absolutely brilliant take on old school hardcore / jungle vibe. I think for many artists as well as myself it’s the sense of nostalgia that we are drawn to, sounds that evoke great memories of a time when electronic music was so new and ground-breaking.

You’ve branched out in lots of different genres of the dance scene but is there any genre that you would just refuse to do? For me, my rule is if it sounds good to me and I can dance to it then I will likely play it. One genre that I don’t see myself touching though is Country!

What was it like covering for Annie Mac while she was on maternity leave? Did you feel under a lot of pressure?It was a really great experience. I feel I’ve grown a lot as a radio presenter and understand that side of the industry much more now. To be honest, because I was so new to doing radio, Radio 1 knew they were throwing me in the deep end, so there wasn’t too much pressure from their end. From my audience though I definitely felt pressure to fill Annie’s shoes! I mean, come on, the woman is a legend!

Is there an album in the works? Yep, I plan to release a compilation album and also my own production album later down the line.

How do you wind down on your jet set lifestyle? I like to read. As soon as I return home from a gig I might watch some Breaking Bad and then I’ll cosy up with a cup of tea and a book.

What three things would you take with you to a deserted island?Tooth brush, paste and macadamia nut butter.

Any pre-show rituals?I like to brush my teeth before I go on stage or before I go on radio, I also like to jump up and down really fast to get my blood flowing before the adrenalin kicks in! B-Traits plays the Tuesday Club at Sheffield Student’s Union on Tuesday 24th September.

‘Anyone into underground music in Sheffield knows The Tuesday Club, it has an international reputation the city can be proud of. For fans of drum and bass, hip-hop and dubstep it’s the UK’s biggest midweek night, with artists like Toddla T proclaiming “Tuesdays are the new Fridays in Sheffield”. Well this semester The Tuesday Club returns, and it’s going to be bigger and better than before.“People know us for really high production shows - the lighting, the sound - and I’m just really pleased that we’re gonna be able to do that, and then some,” organiser Mike McQuillan says.“We’ve got a brand new system in Room Two, and in the Main Room we’ve got everything beefed up basically, and it’s sounding better than ever.”TTC was absent from Sheffield Students’ Union for a year while the refurbishment took place, but this September it returns with a bang. On September 24th it’s a Digital Soundboy takeover with Shy FX, Ms Dynamite, B-Traits (Radio 1), Dismantle and Juma, then October 1st sees a night curated by Rinse FM, featuring Skream, Loefah, Jackmaster and Andy H. Looking ahead there’ll also be a night put together by Rudimental’s label, Black Butter.For any TTC virgins, Mike says: “The community there of party-goers is really good - they’re very accepting. They love talking about music, so even if you don’t know, if you were to ask they’d be telling you on the night what’s good and what you should check out. It’s a really tight community of music-lovers basically, who like a night out as well.“You’re not gonna see a show like it in terms of the production - you’re not gonna see that anywhere else in the city, I guarantee.”

Ugly is moving from DQ. What prompted the move?Well we’ve been at DQ for two years – we had our second birth-day there in April – and while it’s been great we felt like we needed a change. We took some time away over the summer and we’ve had links with the SU for a while now and we felt that moving there

would keep things fresh. It’s good for us and good for them.

How is Ugly planning to show the freshers a good time?We don’t really have anything too specific but we’ve always prided ourselves on being one of the cheapest, if not THE cheapest night out in Sheffield. There’ll

be cheap gin and juice and most importantly a great party vibe – not too serious, but not too cheesy either. There’ll be a huge mix of underground and old school tracks. There’s no more free chicken though unfortunately, but we wanted to let the night speak for itself.

Sum up Ugly for us in a few words. This is a difficult one. I’ll have to go with ‘booty-shaking, gin-sipping good times’.

Do you feel that there are enough nights for hip hop or R&B fans?There’s a few, Baby Got Back and Tuesday Club have always really pushed for hip hop… but we want to marriage both the underground and the commercial scene. That said though we do really switch it up – a bit of dancehall, disco, ragga, 80s etc.

We’re all mashup DJs ourselves so we get bored playing the same thing every week, and the kids get bored hearing the same things every week! It keeps it interesting.

What kind of stuff can you expect to hear at a typical night at Ugly?I tend to play Prince quite a bit. Dr Dre, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, Wu Tang Clan, Kelis, Eve, Outkast…. There’s loads. The Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff is always fun too, and we play a bit of stuff like Beastie Boys as well.

Any plans for guest DJs?We’ve got three residents; myself, Danny Beck and DJ DMK, who is also a Tuesday Club resident. We had Fat Lip as a guest DJ last year and also Smutlee and Montello – I’d love to bring those guys back this year.

You’ve done nights at Ibiza Rocks. What was that like?Danny is an Ibiza Rocks resident, so it’s gone down really well. There’s actually not much of a hip hop scene in Ibiza, its more house and trance

stuff there, so it’s great to bring hip hop back to the table.

When does it all kick off?Our first night is Thursday 26th September, £3 advance and £4 on the door. We’ve got a ton of stuff going on in the day as well, dancers giving out flyers and stickers and we’re also doing a takeover at Sakis on Division Street from 12 til 6pm. There’ll be discount vouchers and the opportu-nity to put you and your mates on the guestlist. It’s going to be good!

Sheffield has an abundance of charity shops, frequented by students just like you! So pick up a vintage bargain and live the sartorial dream.

The catering van which stands outside the Hicks lecture theatre is a student favourite, so you can imagine the shock that swept the city when it was announced that John’s Van had been STOLEN! Jarvis cockerThere was a time when the Brit Awards couldn’t exist without a major controversy. Whether it was Chumbawumba pouring water over then deputy PM John Prescott or Robbie Williams challenging Liam Gallagher to a TV

punch up, there was always summat going off. But by far the best saw the Steel City’s very own Jarvis Cocker making waves at the 1996 Brit Awards when he gate-crashed Michael Jackson’s performance of ‘Earth Song’. The Pulp frontman got up on stage and wiggled his bum at Jackson in an impromptu protest before making a quick exit.

What’s been your most memorable interview over the years?Some of the interviews I did on The World’s Worst Place To Be Gay (Scott’s BBC3 Documentary) were pretty memorable, some incredible stories of people who were gay having such a hard time. In terms of celebrities - probably the first interview I did where I felt like I really got into it was an interview I did with Robbie Williams about 6 years ago. It was just an hour and a half in his house, we had coffee and some cigs, and it was just really relaxed. It was ages ago now, way before he rejoined Take That and everything, but it was a really good interview and it was kind of where he and I became friends as well. Your show recently tried to match make a couple from scratch, have you ever been matched up by a mate?Oh my God, Lisa and Steve! People literally got obsessed with it, it became like a mini soap opera that really drew people in. It was crazy. I’ve been set up on a few blind dates by my friends, and you know they always say ‘oh yeah, you’d be really great together’, and then you get on the date and think ‘why the HELL did you think we’d be good together?!’. I’m not sure I’d ever play out my love life on national radio though. What are you looking forward to about coming to Sheffield for Freshers week?I love Sheffield. It’s one of the best ones I do, without a doubt. Sheffield never lets you down, it has a great atmosphere. I do so many Freshers week events and a lot of them merge into one, but I always remember Sheffield. It really embraces the music scene and I think that’s what makes it more ‘out there’. Best album of 2013, in your opinion?I really like the Naughty Boy album, and he’s a hilarious, down to earth kind of guy. I love his story as well, he went on Deal Or No Deal a few years ago and used the money to build a studio, its completely mental! We owe Noel Edmonds a lot. But it’s a very good, very listenable album. Most awkward moment on the radio?Hands down the most awkward scenario on the radio is an unresponsive live guest. I remember someone telling me that Flo Rida was just about the most fun person ever and then when I interviewed him he literally said about two words. It’s awkward for you as a presenter but it’s also awkward for the audience, they can sense it. I still to this day get the most nervous about interviews. Sheffield Uni’s club night Pop Tarts is famed for its cheesy music, what’s your biggest guilty pleasure?I’m familiar with Pop Tarts actually! Something that I think would really work somewhere like that would be ‘Going To Ibiza’ by the Vengaboyz, it’s a great song. Well, no it’s not, but when you’re drunk in a club at 2am its brilliant. teRenCe, studentI go to Climax because of the exciting build up to it and the varied mix of people who attend. Beforehand I like to gather with friends and when we go we know it is going to be a good night. My favourite Climax memory is my very first Climax one year ago, where I met my boyfriend.

AndY, uRbAn PlAnneRI don’t live in Sheffield any more as I work in Leeds but I miss the place loads… I generally don’t go out of my way to go to LGBT nights but always try to attend Climax as you’re guaranteed a great night out with great friends. I blog for Climax Online too, mainly about hotties and Eurovision but occasionally about stuff that actually matters!

CYd, Phd studentI think these events are important for LGBT visibility and bringing the community together. My strangest Climax-memory? Putting on a gas mask and hopping into a photo booth with about ten friends for some cheesy snaps – loved it.
