CIGARETTE CARDS

All of the cards featured on this page are ‘actual size’ and date back to the beginning of the twentieth century. The ‘Sparrow-Hawk’ and ‘Shop’ are unusual as they are pre-cut and folded to make 3D models. Almost all cigarette manufactures produced these cards to be given away one per packet. They were an ingenious way of creating brand loyalty. Over the years, thousands of different cards were eagerly collected and glued in to purpose made albums. The cards shown here were ‘swaps’, not part of a set and purchased recently for very little money. Ogden’s ‘British Birds’ cut-out

Old shop advertising showcards have been around for over a hundred years. Some have string and can hang up, others have a stand so they be displayed on shop counters and in window displays. All are made of

cardboard, some have a tin covering but all are great survivers as they were never meant to have long shelf-lifes. The examples below are from the Edwardian to 1950s periods and are valued from £25 to £50.
