As we approach Riverside’s 100th Anniversary in 2016, we should pause and reflect on the past and how dedicated leaders have challenged and inspired us to set a standard of the most remarkable care possible for the communities we serve. Our mission to care for others as we care for those we love is rooted in our past, serves us well today, and sets the direction for our future.
Visionaries abound in our past. Dr. S. W. Hobson who in 1910 saw the need for a hospital in Newport News and set about making it possible. Dr. William Sturgis who had the same vision for the Eastern Shore. With the help of Bessie Anderson and her group of dedicated women, they turned a dream into reality. Dr. Mark E. Ellis who pioneered in the treatment of cancer. Dr. David Nichols who cared for the families of Tangier Island for more than 30 years. And I could name so many others whose dedication made an exceptional difference.
This report focuses on stories about people whose commitment to the most remarkable care possible made a difference in the lives of others. It also tells stories of those who are achieving their own personal goals and dreams because of the help they have received through Riverside and the generosity of our thousands of donors.
Riverside is committed to providing a level of care and service that far exceeds the current levels of reimbursement. Your help is needed more than ever to provide the level of remarkable care that is our goal. That’s why I’m so pleased to announce that 2013 was a truly exciting year for the Foundation. The total number of gifts increased by 11 percent and the number of donors by 13 percent over 2012. Together we are making a difference in the level of care our neighbors, friends and loved ones receive.
Finally, let me thank Frances Ellis for her exemplary leadership as Chair of the Foundation for the past three years. Her contribution of time and dedication inspires us all to do our best to keep this Foundation moving forward.

You’d have to look long and hard to find a more compelling story
of striving to make a difference than the Riverside Shore Memorial
Auxiliary’s 94-year history of guaranteeing that every resident of
the Eastern Shore will have the exceptional level of healthcare they
need and deserve.

. . . the Auxiliary has again stepped forward to help ensure the highest quality healthcare for the Eastern Shore with a donation of $550,000 in cash and pledges over the next five years.
Eight years before there was a Shore Memorial Hospital, there was Bessie Anderson and the Auxiliary she helped to found. In fact, it was the passion and commitment of Bessie and her band of determined women that enabled the original hospital to be built.
The year was 1920. Dr. William Sturgis’s great vision was a hospital to serve the Eastern Shore. Funds were slow in coming though. For several years, bricks lay on the ground and windows were stored in a barn as area residents tried to raise enough money to build a hospital.
Finally tired of the long delays, several women led by Bessie Anderson decided they would personally borrow $5,000 to get the construction started. Thus Shore Memorial Hospital and its Auxiliary were born. The hospital opened in 1928.
Today, a large portrait in the hospital boardroom honors this iconic leader and inspires new generations to continue the spirit of giving that’s driven the Shore Memorial Auxiliary for the last 94 years.
As construction begins on the new Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, the Auxiliary has again stepped forward to help ensure the highest quality healthcare for the Eastern Shore with a donation of $550,000 in cash and pledges over the next five years. The money will be used to help build the new hospital, meet immediate patient and program needs, and provide nursing scholarships.
A COMMUNITY THAT CARESA dedication to providing exceptional care for everyone has always been part of the Eastern Shore’s culture, and a guiding vision for the Auxiliary, according to Auxiliary President Jane Bulette. Through the years, the organization has played a critical role in funding every major project and improvement undertaken by the hospital.
“The Eastern Shore is a special community,” Jane says. “The people here are one ‘family’ in a very real sense. They truly care about each other. I’m always amazed at the number of hours our Auxiliary members put into our fundraising activities. Year after year, they just come together to make things happen.”

Jane and her husband came to the Eastern Shore from Philadelphia 20 years ago. She freely admits that her first reaction to moving from the city to the rural life of the Shore was “no way.” Then she met some of the people and as she says, “I changed my mind. Twenty years later, I’m still very glad I did.”
THE AUXILIARY’S FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIESFundraising is a year-round labor of love for the roughly 250 volunteer members of the Auxiliary. “I’m always amazed at the incredible number of hours the members put in each year,” said Foundation Board Member Caramine Kellam. “Most of them have full-time jobs, but still are ready to give whatever it takes to plan and implement our various money-raising events and activities.”
The Auxiliary’s hard work pays off. Each year they raise thousands of dollars largely through the Carousel Gift Shop in the hospital and three events.
The Carousel Gift Shop is open five days a week and is staffed entirely by volunteers. The shop displays an assortment of items, including works by a local artist, 94-year-old Babbie Dunnington.
The Annual Hospital Ball is a black-tie affair held each September at a local country club. The Auxiliary begins work on the Ball in January. Funds come from the sale of 250 tickets plus a silent auction.
The Auxiliary Antique Show is a hugely popular event each year, so popular in fact that there’s a long waiting list of vendors wanting to participate.
The Annual Festival of Lights gives donors an opportunity during the holiday season to purchase lights in honor or remembrance of individuals and groups that have made a difference in their lives, and support their hospital at the same time.
“Our members work hard to make these events successful,” Jane says. “And it’s because caring for others as we would care for those we love is a mission that the Shore Auxiliary brings to life in a way that has transformed healthcare for Eastern Shore residents over an incredible 94 years.”
A dedication to providing exceptional care for everyone has always been part of the Eastern Shore’s culture, and a guiding vision for the Auxiliary.

Dr. Mark E. Ellis touched the lives of thousands during the 20 years he treated cancer patients. A cancer patient himself in his youth, Dr. Ellis pioneered the concept of Integrative Medicine for the treatment of cancer, which involves both patients and their families in a range of special complimentary therapies in addition to the latest medical technology. In 2013 Riverside provided $725,370 to support Integrative Medicine at no cost to patients. We’re proud to honor Dr. Ellis’s legacy.

Jenny Crittenden When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, the news was unbelievable and life-changing for me and my family. I didn’t know where to turn. But I quickly found hope and encouragement from the special people at Riverside, and for that I am forever grateful. My doctors inspired me to give back and help people in my own community who are battling cancer. Please join me in making a tax-deductible gift to the Riverside Tree of Life Cancer Care Fund. Your gift may make the true difference in a patient’s being able to continue or stop their cancer treatment. Be part of the miracle of giving. Remember, each of us can make a difference and together we can change the lives of many. To read Jenny’s full story visit www.riversideonline.com/pinkproject.

Langley Speed-way Pink Project Benefits Cancer Patients Breast cancer survivor Jenny Crittenden and her son Vaughan were determined to express their gratitude for the remarkable care she received at Riverside. In October of last year, a fundraising event at Hampton’s Langley Speedway raised more than $6,000 for the Riverside Tree of Life Cancer Care Fund. More than 6,100 people participated in the “Pink Project” and more than 220 joined in a Victory Lap Walk. “I wanted to help the community and help the people who helped my mom,” Vaughan said. Plans are underway to repeat and expand the event in 2014.

Sandra Henderson
Sandra Henderson headed home to Virginia with high hopes that here she would be able to finally achieve her life’s aspirations: finding a job, completing work for her BA degree in Business, and building a career in Human Resources. She would soon face a series of setbacks that would test her courage and challenge her spirit.
Sandra’s journey from near tragedy to amazing triumph began after she left California and traveled east when her job with a non-profit group was eliminated. Her troubles began with injuries she suffered in an auto accident. It was during therapy for these injuries that she discovered a lump in one breast, which would lead to two surgeries, radiation therapy, and potentially chemotherapy.
She found herself alone, unable to work, in danger of losing her apartment, and not even able to pay auto insurance so she could get to her therapy sessions. That’s when the Tree of Life Cancer Care Fund stepped up and made a difference in Sandra’s life.
“I can’t say enough about the help I received from the Cancer Care Fund,” Sandra said. “Yvonne Pike worked with me to secure the help I needed. The assistance I received from the Tree of Life Cancer Fund made the difference in continuing the life-saving treatment I needed.”
But this is a story with the happiest of endings. Last November, the near miraculous began to happen. First, she was pronounced cancer free; then she graduated with her BA degree. And finally, she accepted a new full time position with the Virginia Beach School System.
“I owe so much to the people who helped,” Sandra said. “I’m so grateful to all the wonderful people at Riverside and the Tree of Life Cancer Care Fund. I’ve never been to a place where doctors, nurses, everyone is so caring and so personally involved. They treat everyone as they would treat their own loved ones. Because of them, my life turned around. In the future, I hope I can help others as they helped me.”

Andrew Waller is a young man with a clear set of goals and ambitions. And he seems to have a very well thought out plan for achieving them. One thing he’s committed to is accomplishing them within the Riverside Health System.
His grandmother was Crystal Hudgins Waller who enjoyed a 46-year nursing career at Riverside, and the Crystal Hudgins Waller Scholarship was established in her honor when she retired. Andrew won the scholarship this year to help with expenses during his last semester in the RN program.
A 1999 graduate of Virginia Tech, Andrew joined Riverside in 2003 as Assistant Recreation Director for The Gardens at Warwick Forest. His work with older patients in the convalescent facility prompted him to shift careers and he enrolled in the Riverside School of Nursing, graduating as an LPN in 2011.
“Riverside has a terrific nursing program and there are so many opportunities for growth within the system that it was kind of a no-brainer for me to take advantage of all that was offered,” he said.
“I really enjoyed working with the older population, but I also knew that there were career limits to staying in Recreation. Of course, my grandmother was a nurse for many years at Riverside and I was already familiar with the profession,” he said.
He also said that caring for seniors and especially those in Hospice gives him a wonderful opportunity to do something worthwhile. “I can make a difference by providing not just medical care, but also by giving support and comfort to my patients and their families at this most difficult of times,” he said.
Looking further into the future, Andrew plans to get his BS in Nursing and seek more growth opportunities within Riverside. “I’m so grateful for the training and support I’ve received at Riverside. Why would I want to go anywhere else?”

“Andrew is a fine example of the dedicated healthcare professionals graduating from our Riverside School of Health Careers. The support we receive for our scholarship funds not only helps these students, but also helps meet a vital need for quality caregivers.”

Grateful Husband Urges Others to Support Hospice CareErnest Sutton lost his wife to cancer last year. In gratitude for care given by Riverside Hospice Care, he wrote a letter appealing for donations. His letter said:“Although it was not easy to watch her go through those final days, I took comfort from the fact that, thanks to Riverside Hospice, Joyce was free of suffering and in the comfort of our own home surrounded by loved ones. [We] experienced the most tender, intimate and loving care from Riverside Hospice. Thanks to your generosity, Riverside Hospice is able to meet the needs of all patients and families. The good news is that we’re living a lot longer. The bad news is that such
longevity brings with it special health problems. Thanks to a dedicated
staff and generous gifts such as Dr. Jane Dillon McKinney’s donation
of $650,000, the Riverside Center for Excellence in Aging and Lifelong
Health (CEALH) is leading the way in dealing with those problems.
In Search of Better Care for Older AdultsCENTER FOR AGING LEADS THE WAY
WWW.RIVERSIDEONLINE.COM/FOUNDATION R I V E R S I D E F O U N D AT I O N 2013 I 2 5
“ We must continually expand our knowledge and seek to improve the care and services we offer to older adults. To do that, we rely heavily on financial support from donors like Dr. McKinney and others; we won’t succeed in our mission without it.”
— Rick Jackson, Executive Director of CEALH
“Dealing with the problems of aging is probably the most daunting challenge facing healthcare,” said Rick Jackson, Executive Director of CEALH. The Center is addressing that challenge on several levels. “We’re in the forefront of clinical trials of new drugs and research on aging, but we also help patients and families deal with memory loss, dementia, and Alzheimer’s on an immediate, personal level through our comprehensive Assessment Program,” Jackson said.
HELP FOR PATIENTS AND FAMILIES THROUGH ASSESSMENTCEALH’s Nurse Faith Shartzer, RN, said that one of the most stressful aspects of memory loss is lack of knowledge and information. The comprehensive assessment we do here provides it. Faith has a personal connection to Alzheimer’s disease. “My late husband had early-onset Alzheimer’s,” she said. “After his death, I devoted myself to helping others cope with Alzheimer’s and other forms of memory loss.”
To the benefit of both, she met Rick Jackson at a Peninsula Leadership Council meeting. A conversation led to an invitation to stop by the Center, which eventually led to Faith’s joining the staff. “The Center’s need and my personal aspirations meshed very well,” she said. “I see the benefit of the work we’re doing here every day.”
Williamsburg resident Peter Gore knows first hand the confusion and uncertainty that result from a parent suffering the loss of mental acuity in later years. He assumed the primary caregiver role for his father who showed symptoms of memory loss at around age 85. “I was here; my brothers and sisters were spread up and down the east coast,” he said.
“There was a lot of denial at first,” he said. “Not just from my father, but also from the family. The worst thing to deal with was our lack of understanding about what was happening and why. My wife and I knew Faith, so we brought my father to the Center for an assessment. My father had seen a neurologist as well and was initially told he likely had Alzheimer’s. However, after the assessment at the center, consensus was that he suffered from the typical dementia of old age,” Peter said.
The Center’s assessment team provided not only a clear diagnosis of the problem, but also counseling, resource information, and other help. “It sounds simple enough, but the value to my family was enormous,” Peter said. “Because Faith made us aware of the unique services offered at CEALH, we knew much more about how to help my father. Our family was better able to cope with the situation, understand what our father was feeling, and for all of us to pull together,” he said. “It made dad’s final years better and easier and I’m so very grateful for that.”

“Giving starts at home. We love our jobs. We love Riverside. Things aren’t always taken care of within the budget, but patients still have needs. Next year we want to expand the program. We hope more departments will join in. It’s people within Riverside helping each other.”
— Lisa York, Internal Auditor
For the past three years, Audit Team members set money aside to celebrate birthdays and special occasions. As schedules became more hectic and celebrations became less frequent, the fund wasn’t being used. The team sought a better use for their money, and decided to make a donation that would directly support our caregivers. Nurse Managers were asked what items would enhance the care provided to patients and families.
Riverside Regional responded with a simple list. Nursing Vice President Gwen Hartzog said, “The Nurse Managers asked for things we use every day in providing care to the patients we serve.” As a result, the Audit Team donated $800 to the RRMC Make A Difference Fund to buy a list of needed items. “We can’t thank [the Audit Team] enough for this contribution. [They] truly know the meaning of giving,” Mrs. Hartzog said.

Think about it. Your physician spent years in college, medical school and internships just earning the right to be called Doctor and has dedicated his or her life to caring for you.
March 30 is National Doctors’ Day. It’s the perfect time to say thanks and honor your doctor with a gift of gratitude for the compassionate care he or she gives all year long to keep you healthy and happy.
Your donation given in honor of your physician to the Riverside charitable fund of your choice will let your doctor know just how important he or she is to you. And 100% of your gift will support our commitment to provide not just good care but remarkable care— fulfilling our mission to care for others as we care for those we love.
The Make A Difference Funds allow us to do things like cover the cost of prescription drugs or transportation to and from treatments for cancer patients with limited means, provide educational scholarships for nursing students, and invest in research that will help transform care.
Although we will recognize and thank all our physicians on Doctors’ Day, imagine how special the day will be for your own doctor because of your personal message and gift of gratitude made in honor of the remarkable care he or she has provided. As one of our recently honored physicians noted, “There is no more rewarding feeling for a physician than knowing that he is making a difference in his patient’s life, and knowing about this gift of gratitude has just made my long exhausting day much better.”
Doctors Give A Lifetime Caring For UsLET’S GIVE THEM ONE DAY OF THANKS
To honor your doctor with a gift of gratitude and write her or him a personal thank you note at the same time, go to: www.riversideonline.com/doctorsday.

For more than 30 years, Dr. David Nichols flew himself and other medical professionals to Tangier Island each week, giving care to the isolated island’s 500 plus residents until he passed away in 2010. You can help keep this great man’s legacy alive by making a donation to help cover the annual cost of transportation to and from Tangier Island.

“The one need we have that’s above and beyond Riverside’s commit-
ment or the Tangier Heath Foundation’s financial ability to sustain is
the enormous transportation cost.”
— Jimmie Carter
It started as a simple invitation to lunch. By the end of the day, there was a commitment to construct a new medical clinic for Tangier Island. That’s how Irvington real estate developer Jimmie Carter explains his involvement with Dr. David Nichols and his Island clinic.
“We were looking at some property in Dr. Nichols’s helicopter and decided to fly over to Tangier Island for lunch. Later, David took me by the clinic. The place was old, moldy, the equipment was out-of-date. I said he needed a new clinic and that’s how it all started,” he said.
Carter established the Tangier Island Health Foundation and began to raise money to build the new clinic. It took almost five years, but in August of 2010, the David B. Nichols Health Center opened. Dr. Nichols passed away December 30, 2010.
Some years earlier, Dr. Nichols had entered into a relationship with Riverside, which included a commitment to carry on his service to the Island. The Tangier Island Health Foundation raised enough money to maintain the clinic; Riverside would provide medical staffing. Carter calls it “a perfect partnership.” He says, “Clearly Riverside is doing this out of compassion and not out of profit.”
Carter says, “The one need we have above and beyond Riverside’s commitment or the Tangier Heath Foundation’s financial ability is the cost of transporting physicians and other medical staff to and from the island,” Carter says. On behalf of the citizens of Tangier Island, the Tangier Island Health Foundation, and our wonderful partners at Riverside, I am asking for everyone’s support.”
Led by a $10,000 matching grant from Dr. James and Trina Lesnick, the Riverside Foundation in partnership with the Tangier Island Health Foundation mounted a campaign in 2013 to secure donations to cover the transportation costs. When he announced the matching grant, Dr. Lesnick said, “I strongly believe the efforts to continue Dr. Nichol’s legacy of care to Tangier is extremely important.”
We are very grateful to the generous people who are helping Riverside provide care for the citizens of Tangier, but more help is needed. If you’d like to help keep Dr. Nichols’s legacy of love alive, contact Angie Healy at [email protected] or 757-234-8745. Click here to view video >>

Nancy and Rhys Weakley
“The most compelling reason I see for making this campaign a success is that it represents an investment in our community’s future,” Rhys said. “Riverside Tappahannock Hospital will always be there for us when we need it. Giving to this campaign now is making an investment to ensure quality care for years to come.”
To learn more please watch “The Building a Better Place to Heal Video” at www.youtube.com/watch?v=whH1Gpx_SHs or contact Scott Brown, Director of Advancement at 804-201-5358 or [email protected].
Nancy Weakley is very clear about why she and her husband Rhys are contributors and active supporters of the capital campaign to transform Riverside Tappahannock Hospital into an all-private room facility.
“I believe that we on the Northern Neck are so fortunate to have a facility like Riverside Tappahannock Hospital, which is evolving into a state-of-the-art facility with such a talented group of doctors,” she said. “Rhys and I feel strongly that we all need to do what we can through community support to make sure [the hospital] continues to provide the highest level of professional care.”
She said the fund raising effort, which is aptly named the “Building a Better Place to Heal, Close to Home” campaign, strikes a very personal chord with her. “It’s essential to have the best possible medical facility close by to serve our community,” she said. “Without Riverside Tappahannock Hospital, we’d have to do what my parents did—travel to Richmond for emergency and hospital care.”
Rhys Weakley knows well the benefit of having exceptional medical care right at hand within the rural Northern Neck community. “I was having great pain in my right hip for several years, but I feared having surgery to replace it,” he said. “After a year of research, I finally found somebody right in my own backyard I trusted to take care of me. Dr. Tyler Wind had the experience and a fine hospital to perform the surgery in. It all turned out really well. I’m very happy and grateful to Dr. Wind, the nursing staff, and every one at RTH.”
Nancy and Rhys cite three strong reasons for supporting the capital campaign. Nancy said, “The campaign will not only improve the quality of care for patients in so many ways, but also will help ensure that we can attract and keep the absolute best doctors and medical professionals for the community.”
“The most compelling reason I see for making this campaign a success is that it represents an investment in our community’s future,” Rhys said. “Riverside Tappahannock Hospital will always be there for us when we need it. Giving to this campaign now is making an investment to ensure quality care for years to come.”

There is a large and growing body of research linking health and academic achievement. It shows that higher levels of health can enhance cognitive abilities, behavior and physical performance. With the help of corporate partners such as PNC Financial Services Group, Riverside is supporting An Achievable Dream’s effort to address this critical issue.

“When we saw what Riverside was doing within An Achievable Dream Academy, we knew it was a perfect fit with our ongoing efforts to invest in the future through corporate gifts that impact children.” — Roger P. Wallace, VP Corporate Communications, PNC
PNC Financial Services Group through its PNC Foundation has made a substantial corporate contribution in support of the Riverside Clinics serving the two An Achievable Dream campuses in Newport News.
The Riverside funded and operated in-school Clinics were inspired by the growing research linking health and academic achievement. Such services are particularly critical for An Achievable Dream because so many of its students are at high risk of failure. The Clinics provide a range of medical, wellness and health education programs that go far beyond the typical “school nurse” concept. Our nursing staff educates students about healthy behaviors, helps them manage chronic conditions, and creates a foundation of physical and mental health to support success.
Both Riverside and PNC uphold a strong sense of mission. When Roger Wallace, VP of Corporate Communications, and Sonia McCormick, VP and Director of Client & Community Relations at PNC facilitated the partnership, they discovered just how closely the organizations’ values aligned. “Along with green building practices, one of the philanthropic areas where PNC is focused is school readiness and childhood development,” Mr. Wallace said.
Although the PNC corporate gift is directed to the Riverside Clinic and its work within the schools, Wallace believes it has even broader implications. “What Riverside and An Achievable Dream are doing is a vital end unto itself. But as a large and growing financial services company, we’re also interested in helping to create the workforce of tomorrow,” he said. “That’s a bonus for what else is going on at An Achievable Dream and it’s a very gratifying return on an investment in the future.”
“Corporate partners such as PNC are critical to us as we strive to expand our service to the community in a time of lower reimbursements and increasing costs,” said Foundation Executive Director Debbie Atkinson. “We’re very grateful for this wonderful PNC contribution.”

RWRH Gala Benefits Healing GardenRiverside Walter Reed Hospital held the 3rd Annual Tree of Lights Gala on December 7, 2013.
The spectacular holiday event was enjoyed by 300 community members who came together and raised over $36,000 to help build a Healing Garden at the Cancer Center on the Campus of the hospital. The Gala’s success is a testament to the residents’ continuing a long tradition of investing in the health and happiness of their community. Charitable giving helps Riverside fulfill its mission—to care for others as we would care for those we love and to do what otherwise would not be possible. When complete, the Healing Garden will bring peace, comfort and encouragement for cancer patients and their families.

I am always touched by the kindness of each and every one of our donors. As you will see in this 2013 Annual Report to our community, your generosity has benefited all of our Riverside communities and many of the programs we provide to improve health and well-being.
We believe there is no such thing as “good enough,” and we strive to give our communities the best healthcare possible. The Riverside Foundation is a steward for this mission to provide a higher standard of care. Through your support, and our health, educational and community programs, we can transform the definition of care. Together, we can achieve the remarkable.
There are many examples of our commitment to delivering remarkable care that you will read about in this report. One in particular is the story of the “Pink Project” captured through this video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQHOqONLNt0. I continue to be inspired by the passion and commitment displayed by Jenny Crittenden and her son, Vaughan.
Our mission is simple: to care for others as we would care for those we love. However, such a task is easier imagined than achieved. At the Riverside Foundation, we work tirelessly to ensure every member of the communities we serve has access to the level of care they deserve. We are honored to be supported in our cause by a dedicated Board of Directors chosen for their leadership, experience and passion for serving others. They work diligently to ensure the Foundation’s priorities and practices best serve the Riverside mission for a higher standard of care. I am also thankful to the Riverside team members who deliver on this higher standard of care every day.
In closing, during 2016 Riverside will be celebrating a 100- year legacy and preparing for another century of saving lives and transforming patient care. I am looking forward to sharing more about this tremendous milestone in the months to come.
With great regard and respect, thank you for all you do.

Ever since community leaders came together in 1910 to raise funds
for the construction of the first Riverside Hospital in Newport News,
Riverside has been passionate about giving back to the neighbors
it serves, as well as being a leader in continually transforming the
community’s health.
Riverside Partners with Local CommunitiesNEEDS ASSESSMENT IDENTIFIES KEY ISSUES
WWW.RIVERSIDEONLINE.COM/FOUNDATION R I V E R S I D E F O U N D AT I O N 2013 I 5 7
While tackling national health problems such as diabetes or mental health can be daunting, the beauty of addressing health concerns at a local level with community partners is that seemingly insurmountable issues become more solvable problems.
In 2013, Riverside embarked on a process to engage with local leaders in each of the communities it serves to identify the top community health needs and service gaps. In each community, local leaders from governments, businesses, religious organizations, schools, law enforcement, health departments and non-profit organizations were brought together to create a Community Health Needs Assessment, as well as to develop plans to address identified problems.
While tackling national health problems such as diabetes or mental health can be daunting, the beauty of addressing health concerns at a local level with community partners is that seemingly insurmountable issues become more solvable problems. Though each community identified its own top health concerns and plans, there was a lot of overlap in the types of problems and solutions the groups found.
LACK OF AWARENESS OF SERVICES
Many of the community groups discovered that there were more services in their community than anyone knew. For example, the Middle Peninsula group discovered that there were many services available through different agencies in the community, but that not all of the community services organizations knew of their existence or how to refer their patients or clients to them. Thus, the group will participate in a Regional Resource Council to help organizations throughout the community to be better aware of how to access services that are offered.
In many communities, there was a similar issue around services for seniors; there were many services available, but a lack of knowledge about what was offered or how to access them. The Peninsula/ Williamsburg group decided to build off existing systems and work towards a central repository of services for seniors that could be accessed by all of the different organizations.
5 8 I R I V E R S I D E F O U N D AT I O N 2013 WWW.RIVERSIDEONLINE.COM/FOUNDATION
ACCESS TO CARE
Another issue that came up in many of the local communities was the concept of access to care. Whether the barriers are lack of transportation, problems accessing mental health services, language barriers or health literacy concerns, each of these issues prevents community members from accessing services they need. One group that addressed this was the Northern Neck. They discovered that patients with low health literacy were having trouble navigating throughout the community services. In response to this, Riverside will be collaborating with the Three Rivers Health Department to investigate and possibly implement a tool to help identify these patients so that more assistance can be provided to help them get help from the many services available.
LIFESTYLE CHOICES
The importance of healthy lifestyle choices was also a common theme among the groups. On the Eastern Shore, the group will be working with the YMCA program Y-Change to help focus on changing bad habits such as smoking, as well as exploring additional opportunities for collaboration with Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital.
Since that original group of leaders came together more than 100 years ago to build the first hosptial, Riverside has learned the importance of listening to the wisdom of community leaders. This practice has served Riverside well in the use of local boards to manage each local hospital, and Riverside looks forward to continuing these new partnerships with local leaders to continually address the unique health needs of each community.
