Green waste and composting at home

lift the lid on waste habits

Composting

Composting is an efficient and environmentally friendly way to reduce the amount of

waste you put into your rubbish bin. Composting has many

benefits - it greatly improves the health and fertility of soil including

its ability to retain moisture, saves landfill space and reduces greenhouse gas (methane) from

rotting waste in landfills.

Composting also reduces the cost of rubbish disposal. It is nature’s

own way of recycling!

Did you know?

Each year, Victorians throw out enough food waste to fill the MCG three times!

Reusing your food waste by making compost or worm juice not only reduces the amount of waste you send to landfill, it also makes great food for your garden!

Worm farms

A worm farm is a fun and easy way to recycle, with the added

bonus of creating a valuable fertilizer for your garden.

Worm farms are a particularly good way of recycling food

scraps and can be purchased from most hardware stores.

Green waste

You can take garden prunings and grass clippings to the Maldon Transfer Station or Castlemaine Landfill. (Please note that plant material that is classified as an Environmental Weed by the Department of Primary Industries will not be accepted as green waste and will be charged at the higher general waste rate.)

You can also buy garden mulch from the Castlemaine Landfill. Check with Landfill staff for more information.

Help us to empty your bins!

Your rubbish and recycling bins are picked up by a single operator collection vehicle with a mechanical lifting arm. The driver operates the mechanical arm from inside the truck and will not leave the truck cabin.

Your bins will be emptied if you:

place them at least 1/2 a metre apart on the kerbside

make sure the wheels are facing your property

place your bins on the kerbside the night before your collection day

For residents in rural areas, please place your bins one metre off the formed road, well clear of the traffic.

For residents who live in courts, please take your bins to the nearest straight part of the road, where they are easily accessed by the collection vehicle.

Missing or damaged bins?

Rubbish and recycling bins remain the property of Mount Alexander Shire Council and should not be removed from the property. If your bin is missed or damaged, please call the customer enquiry line on 1800 999 690.

Not sure of your collection days?

Council’s Collection Calendar is a useful reminder to keep track of rubbish and recycling collection days. Residents wishing to obtain a copy can do so by visiting Council’s Customer Service Centre in Lyttleton Street, Castlemaine or by calling 5471 1700. Alternatively, it can be downloaded from Council’s website at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au/wastemanagement
