I ts not yet mid-January and the purple Snow Crocus are blooming out by the front

walk In the Fall of 98 I planted about 350 of the tiny bulbs (actually corms) throughout the meadow that is my front yard along with a couple hundred Narshycissus bulbs

I chose the Snow Crocus over the larger Dutch Crocus not only for their ability to seed about the yard but also for their very early bloom I am not much of a fan of winter and so any reminder of warm-er times is grea tly welshycomed in my yard The delishycate white Snowshydrop and the litshytle buttercup-like Winter Aconite are two more bulbs that take the stage before Spring arrives

These bulbs need to be planted in the Fall but there are other winter-bloomers that can be planted this Spring to get us through the next big chill While at the nursery look for the Hellebores (aka Christmas Rose and Lenten

Rose) These hardy perennials proshyduce low mounds of dark evershygreen foliage and lovely nodding single rose-like flowers in burshygundy rose or white in mid to late winter The Stinking Hellebore (Helleborus foeditus) has been disshyplaying its green flowers (only stinky if you get your nose right down there) since the Holidays I put these handsome plants near

the front steps and the patio so I wont miss the first flower

My Ackerman Camellias (Camellia oleifera hybrids) are just finishing their bloom These hardy Fall bloomers came out of the Nashytional Ar boretum

after a couple of harsh winters in the late 70s Their habit is more open and tree-like than the tradishytional Camellias and their flowers are smaller more delicate A great evergreen tree even if it didnt flower profusely from a young age (At the nursery look for winshytry names such as Winter Star Snow Flurry and Winters Hope

Well the new millenshynium has arrived and my New Years

celebration was pretty much like all the rest I made

a fool of myself and the Bowl games are mostly a blur I

hope all of you had a safe and sound holiday

I thought our community went all out on house decorations and outdoor lighting We can be proud of our neighbors at this holiday season Lets try to carry this pride of house and home throughout the year

I would like to call your attenshytion to the good deed of one of our neighbors I am not identifying this person by name for protective reashysons The good samaritan observed

a crime in process at our 7-11 store and followed the criminals in his car and obtained the getaway vehicles license number which he provided the responding police officers This action led to the arrest of the bad guys Job well done neighbor

I have learned a personal lesson from writing this column It is one thing to call attention to commushynity problems and it is quite anshyother to get any change in behavshyior If there are any activists out there who are interested in making a difference come to Association meetings and volunteer your help I look forward to seeing you there and reporting on your accomplishshyments~
