mothers has been a longstanding problem in rural areas of Maine.But in towns like Greenville where a 9-to-5 job is the exception,

rather than the rule, the problem is more prevalent. Many single moms work at restaurants or tourist-related businesses that are open seven days week. So fi nding daycare on weekends or evenings is a bigger challenge.

C.A. Dean Memorial Hospital has run into this problem numerous times, so they recently took a survey of their 176 employees, asking 15 questions about daycare arrangements.

Bre Graffam, the senior executive assistant at C.A. Dean, said that many employees who use daycare experienced the same problems. “Every daycare provider in Greenville has a waiting list,” Graffam said. “In addition, many don’t take infants and they can only take a limited number of children in accordance with state law.”

Graffam said that it’s getting to the point where lack of daycare is having a “negative impact on some of our employees. Some are think-ing about changing from full-time to per diem or quitting altogether.”

Graffam also said that with the new emphasis on “branding” the Moosehead Lake region and encouraging economic development, the problem needs to be addressed. “How are we going to convince young families to move here if they can’t fi nd daycare?” she said. “It’s also affecting our job recruitment efforts.”

Polly Sherman has been operating Polly’s Day Care for 26 years and currently has the maximum number of youngsters allowed by law: six during the day and four after school. “I also have a waiting list,” she said. “There’s no doubt we need more daycare in the area, but there’s a lot more to the story.”

Sherman said that she’s open from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., fi ve days week. “That’s a big commitment for me, but some parents don’t seem to understand that,” she said.

Sherman cites cases where parents don’t bother calling in about illness or a change of plans. At other times, she’s stayed around much longer than 5 p.m., waiting for late pickups. “How many people would want to give up a 40-hour a week job and open a daycare center to-day?” Sherman said. “In addition, state regulations are getting tough-er every year. They used to inspect us annually. Now it’s four times a year.”

PISCATAQUIS - MOFGA’s Annual Farmer to Farm Tours will be in Piscataquis County on Friday, November 6. The Ripley Farm Tour in Dover-Foxcroft will be held at 1 p.m. and the Checkerberry Farm Tour will be held at 3 p.m. in Parkman. These tours are a learning opportunity offered through MOFGA’s 2015 Farmer to Farmer Conference, and are open to all and are free

The public is invited to see how Gene and Mary Margaret Ripley have grown their farm over the past seven years to a total of 5 acres of mixed vegetables and cover crops. The Ripleys expanded again in 2015 by hiring their fi rst full-time employee, increasing their winter storage and fi ne tuning mechanical cultivation on their organic farm. The Ripleys are quoted as saying, “We’re really excited that out of their over 450 Certifi ed Organic farms in the state of Maine, MOFGA has chosen to highlight two Piscataquis County farms this year at their annual conference.”

Jason and Barbara Kafka of Checkerberry Farm have been developing their farm and homestead since 1981. They have been MOFGA-certifi ed organic for 25 years, and during that time they’ve transitioned from raising livestock and vegetables and selling at farmers’ markets to wholesaling vegetables that are grown in greenhouses and high tunnels, and on 20 acres of fi elds.The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District is serving as a local co-host for these farm tours. of Dexter lost a dear, sweet and gentle soul recently. One who not only delighted the children who came to visit, but comforted many an adult with her quiet and undemanding presence. Even in her twilight years, when she slept most of the day in the offi ce of her beloved mistress, Liz Breault, she would occasionally take a degnifi ed walk into the outer rooms and happily accept any caresses that came her way.

Last Saturday the Abbott Memorial Library lost Scooter, one of the library cats. She came to the library 17 years ago as a

kitten and faithfully carried out her duties as greeter, companion, comforter and friend. What a pleasant surprise for many a patron to fi nd a soft, purring cat in their lap. It always made them smile, and it made them feel a little special. It’s also worthy to note that Abbott Memorial Library never had a problem with mice.

Scooter left us on All Hallow’s Eve, also known as Halloween. I have always felt Halloween to be a magical night, especially for cats. With leaves swirling, the moon shining, and clouds scudding across the sky, you can almost see the spirits dancing and frolicking in the shadows or swooping through the trees. I like to think that Scooter left the call to join those spirits and is now a young kitten again dancing with her friends.

by Mike LangeMILO – With an estimated 1,500 jobs lost due to the closure of paper mills in Penobscot County and the

shutdown of United Technologies Corporation in Pittsfi eld during the past year, it’s vital that the region “re-engineers itself.”

That was the message brought to a group of business owners and public offi cials in Milo last week by Vicky Rusbult and Jeff Whalen from Eastern Maine Development Corporation.

A similar discussion took place at the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council’s meeting in Brownville last month, but the October 28 meeting at the Three Rivers Kiwanis Hall had more of a local focus.

There are several opportunities for growth in the EMDC’s service area, which is defi ned as Piscataquis, Penobscot, Waldo, Hancock and eastern Somerset counties, Rusbult said. “But they all require workforce development – to get people trained so they can adapt to the jobs that are out there now or coming down the pike,” she explained.

Within a 50 mile radius of Bangor, there is a “higher concentration of educational institutions than any other area in the state,” Rusbult said. “So we need to capitalize on that. We need to create pathways for high school graduates to advance to higher education.”

For the EMDC region “small is the new big,” she added. “We’re not likely to attract large companies that hire 1,000 employees like the paper mills did.” There are several revolving loan funds available through EMDC and other sources, some which require matching funds or creation of a specifi c number of new jobs.

Expansion of broadband should be a high priority in underserved areas as well, said the EMDC pro-gram director. “We’ve had conversations with the Economic Development Administration and the North-ern Border Regional Commission about a pilot program where we could take fi ve or six communities and do a complete evaluation of needs,” Rusbult said.

Rusbult also emphasized that towns are better off “collaborating rather than competing. That way, you’re both not going after the same pot of money.”

When asked what some of the more pressing needs in the community were, Town Manager Damien Pickel said that there are still many vacant storefronts downtown and there is no lodging in the commu-nity. “We’d like to do something with the downtown area,” Pickel said. “There’s the old furniture store and the Masonic hall that’s just sitting there. The seller has a price on it, but nobody is ever going to meet it.”

Ron Desmarais, who owns several businesses and rental properties in Milo, also noted that a major problem in the town is lack of lodging. “We’re right off major snowmobile and ATV trails. We have an incredible amount of recreation here, but no place to stay,” he said.

Desmarais also said that some problems he’s up against include the high cost of energy. “When a small business has to pay $3,000 or $4,000 a month for electricity, it’s very hard to expand or add employees,” he said. With more than 100 unused acres in the business park, Desmarais said that it would be an ideal location for a solar farm.

On a smaller scale, Desmarais recently installed 36 solar panels on the Harrigan Learning Center ad-jacent to the Three Rivers Kiwanis hall, and the system generates more than enough electricity to power both buildings.

Rusbult suggested that town offi cials contact the U.S. Rural Development Agency to fi nd out if funding is available for a municipal solar farm and to what extent.

She also said that Maine’s congressional delegation “is very aware of the problems in this area and have put a high priority on economic development.”

EMDC offers Milo areabusinesses growth guidance

DEXTER - Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Parish’s Annual Christmas Craft Fair is again raising funds for its community projects. The Fair will be held on November 7 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Dexter.

Our Lady of the Snows Parish has three church locations: St. Anne’s in Dexter, St. Thomas in Dover-Foxcroft and St. Francis/St. Paul in Milo. The Parish has given fuel assistance to families in need in the three communities regardless of their denomination.

The funds raised from the Craft Fair will go towards Our Lady’s Kitchen in Dexter, which has been serving a free community meal on Sundays for the past eight years, all are welcome.

The funds will also go towards a new ministry along with other Dover-Foxcroft Churches, offering a free community meal in Dover-Foxcroft every Monday.

Items to be available at the fair includ crafts, plants, books, baked goods, grandma’s attic items, hand-made ornaments, raffl e baskets, and games for children. A light breakfast and lunch items will also be available for purchase.

Theme baskets will be available by silent auction and raffl e auction and there will be a special room dedicated to knitting yarns, cross-stitching kits and books donated by Theresa Daughton’s family.

DOVER-FOXCROFT – The Builders Club of SeDoMoCha Middle School will host a Miracle Tree event at the banquet room at Pat’s Pizza in Dover-Foxcroft on Saturday, November 7 and Sun-day, November 8 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. each day to raise money for charities in Piscataquis County.

relying on volunteer labor which can become a burden on a few dedicated workers.Our daughter Dana Frasz, a 2001 FA graduate, aims to change that. She has devised a “kitchen”

concept which will reduce food waste and feed the hungry while at the same time creating jobs by making saleable products! She is currently engaged in a “crowd funding” campaign on the internet to raise the necessary money to launch the kitchen. The fundraising effort ends on November 16. So far, people have contributed about $24,000 toward the $30,000 goal. If this project is successful, which it is likely to be, Dana can then promote it around the country as a model for other charities to become self-sustaining.

DEXTER - For many bakers the lure of holiday baking is a much-anticipated annual activity. Cookies top the list of favorite holiday goodies. This year share your memories of holiday baking traditions at the Abbott Memorial Library’s Holiday Cookie Exchange.

A cookie exchange is a gathering where attendees each bring a given quantity of their favorite holiday cookie, say 6 dozen. All participants get a chance to sample the cookies, and in the end, you leave with 5 dozen cookies; a sampling of all the different cookies that were created.

Each participant bakes six dozen cookies and brings them to the library at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 12. No plain chocolate chip cookies, no-bakes or mixes are allowed. One dozen will be for tasting and the other 5 dozen for exchanging. The library will serve coffee, tea and punch and there will be prizes for most festive outfi t and favorite cookie. A Holiday Cookie Exchange is a celebration of sugar and spice and everything nice.

Graffam said that a survey of local businesses revealed the

same problems that C.A. Dean is having.

“The next step will be to form a planning committee of fi ve to seven people – probably meeting bi-weekly at fi rst – to share some ideas,” Graffam said.

AUGUSTA – With the 2015 hunting season underway, Governor Paul R. LePage is again urging Maine hunters to consider supporting the Hunters for the Hungry Program by donating all or part of their harvest to feed families in need, according to Maine’s Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.

The program provides a means for Maine hunters, as well as hunt-ers from other states, to donate harvested game to food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and households with a medical need.

“The Hunters for the Hungry Program is a way that Maine hunt-ers can pursue a sport they love and help their neighbors at the same time,” Gov. LePage notes. “Donations can provide meat to food pan-tries, soup kitchens, shelters and households across the state. The fact that this program has grown so steadily is both a testament to the need and the generosity of Mainers,” he concluded.

Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Commis-sioner Walt Whitcomb noted that since its establishment in 1996, the Hunters for the Hungry Program has provided thousands of nutri-tious meals to people across the state.

“Since 1996,” said Whitcomb, “the Hunters for the Hungry Program has put high quality, native protein on the tables of Maine families.”

The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry distributes many types of donations to food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and households with a medical need. The Hunters for the Hungry Program is part of the Department’s Emergency Food Assis-tance Program. It is done in cooperation with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife’s wardens, Maine State Troopers and hunters, who are all working towards a common goal of helping fellow Mainers.

The program accepts bear, deer and moose donations. Road kill do-nations are also accepted, provided the meat is not damaged. Hunters do not pay for the processing of donated meat. Meat processing costs are paid for by the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and For-estry or the charity that receives the food. Hunters choosing to keep their game can still donate a few pounds to the program. Meat pro-cessors that are interested in getting involved with the program and learning how it works should call 207-287-7513.

Erica was born and raised in Northern Maine, and completed her Bachelors and Masters in Social Work from the University of Maine Orono. Erica has a long history of providing quality mental health services to patients of all ages and a particular passion for providing access to mental health services in rural areas. Erica has worked for the past 5 years at MAS Homecare of Maine. During her time at MAS her role evolved into that as the Clinical Director of Mental and Behavioral Health Services.

Starting pay is $9.09/hr or higher if DSP and/or CRMA Certified.Residential and Community Supports Team Leader provides assistance for people who reside in agency residences and their own homes as well as support, guide, coach and supervise the Residential and Community Support Specialists. The Team Leader developes and implements person-centered plans and assists people to increase independence in all activities of daily living including scheduling of staff and transportation. In addition to the general requirements outlined below, preferred requirements include: AS Degree, experience in health, education, human or rehabilitation services, ability to transport participants, basic computer knowledge including date entry and email. This is a full-time, 40 hour position located in Pittsfield and surrounding areas; starting pay is based on education and experience.General Requirements:
