Annual Report 2013YOUR IMPACT

Dear FriendsI hope you enjoy reviewing this annual report. And I say “enjoy” because every picture, testimonial and hard figure represents the selfless work of Free to Smile supporters and volunteers. I say “enjoy” because this annual report contains undeniable evidence that helping make the world a better place is not an unattainable dream but a remarkable and beautiful reality.

This annual report provides a snapshot of our work throughout 2013, our mission trips, our patients and volunteers, our donors and corporate supporters, and our 2012 unaudited financial report. As a nonprofit organization, we feel we must be accountable and transparent in our activities, which is why we encourage you to contact us if you have any questions about the information included in this report. We also feel strongly about giving credit where credit is due, which is why I would like to both thank and recognize our donors and volunteers for their time, talent and support. Every year their generosity blows us away. In 2013, they did it once again.

Please send us your thoughts and feedback by e-mail at [email protected].

Thank you for your interest in Free to Smile Foundation.

Byron HenryPresident

Thank you for a great 2013! It truly takes a village to accomplish the great work Free to Smile is fortunate to engage in every year. Thank you for a great 2012! Even if you did not personally travel to one of our mission destinations, YOU made this possible:

Free to Smile Foundation regularly cares for children in Niger (dental and surgical missions) and Cambodia (dental mission), travelling to each location annually. In 2013, we were forced to cancel our trip to Niger due to political unrest, and rescheduled our Cambodia trip to avoid rainy season. We are thrilled that at the time of publication of this annual report, we have already visited both!

2013 was an exciting year in more than one way. Not only did our number of volunteers grow, so did the number of individual and corporate supporters and their generosity.

2013 was also the first year Free to Smile hosted a gala event, Miles of Smiles, on Saturday, May 4, at The Party Barn at the Wexner Residence. Miles of Smiles 2013 was indeed a night to remember. With Maria Durant as emcee, Tamdin Wangdu from Tibetan Village Project as speaker, music by Cover Model and Catering by Scott, the event was a greater success than we could have ever expected or hoped for—funds raised totalled $104,690, enough to provide more than 344 surgeries!!!

...& highlightsAnd how about spreading the word about Free to Smile? From Flower Hill, New York; to Denver, Colorado; to Fayette County, Ohio; news of Free to Smile volunteers’ good work got noticed and praised:

2013 volunteersmeet Max... ...& his mom

“I have walked in their shoes and, at times, it has hindered me. It has been a burden—a visible punishment, so-to-speak. Now, finally, my burden can become a gift to someone else.”

“I have grown up in the small village of Kohler, Wisconsin, where our kindergarten class was relatively the same group of people as our graduating class. Some of the same kids who made fun of the way I said “s” or how my nose looked are the same kids in many of my high school classes. The same 42 kids for 13 years can make a place feel small. Kohler is like a pair of old, sometimes comfortable jeans that I have outgrown. I long to be in a new environment with new resources, new people to learn with and from.

While I have some uncertainty about the trip, I know I can help the people of Guatemala that have been ostracized for their physical difference.”

Max, 15, joined Free to Smile Foundation’s trip to Uspantan, Guatemala, in February 2013. He has a cleft lip and palate and has received eight surgeries.

6

“Just a note regarding Max's experience... I’m amazed. I’m speechless and touched. Thank you so much for giving Max this experience. Thank you, thank you for allowing him to have a hand in healing someone else.

As a mother, I am grateful to each of you—you not only helped those kids in Guatemala, you helped a young man here as well in ways you might never see.”

—Heidi

...& his mom

“It's difficult for me to describe my trip with Free to Smile Foundation. I was excited, humbled and fascinated by this experience. It was humbling to meet the patients and their families. Everyone was warm and welcoming. Happy to be there and thankful for the chance to have their kids receive the operation.”

—Justin

“Having little arms wrapped around me giving me a hug, a head on my shoulder and a “muchas gracias” from every patient makes

all of the work worthwhile.”

“We need to understand that

no matter what we do, we can always display

compassion and kindness.”

“The past ten days have been some of the best days of my life both professionally and personally. Professionally, there is nothing better than treating someone that can only repay you with a smile and who does not have access to care otherwise.

Personally, these experiences always reenforce the compassion and kindness we should all share with one another.”

—Brian

7

“It is a moment cherished, a moment remembered for a lifetime. A baby’s smile, a wave, a mother’s hopeful stare, a father’s proud smile. This is Free to Smile. We make a difference not because we feel

we should but because we know we should.“—Scott

Who we areFounded in 2008, Free to Smile Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) humanitarian organization. As such, we rely upon the generosity of others—individuals, companies and foundations—to fulfill our mission:

To support and sustain comprehensive, quality surgical and dental services to poor and underprivileged children and adolescents throughout the world. To this end, our volunteers and partner organizations provide free surgical, dental, and educational care for all that are served by the foundation across the globe.

About Us Our BoardFree to Smile Foundation Board Members are people who dedicate their time, resources, and energy to fulfilling the foundation’s mission.

Dr. Byron Henry, PresidentStacy Henry, Executive DirectorDr. Normund Auzins Dr. Tim BartholomewDr. Phil ChahineDr. Jason CulleyDr. Matthew HamiltonBill Klausman

Our Goals• To continue to raise awareness of

the great need of impoverished children with cleft lip/palate deformities and dental needs.

• To visit each mission site on a continual basis to treat patients and educate local surgeons.

• To recruit volunteers who share our commitment and want to join our mission trips.

We are just a group of people who want to make a difference.

Why we goFree to Smile turns compassionate thought and desire into activism. We carry our skills across borders to bring about true change, and train local doctors to ensure sustainable quality care. During our trips, we eliminate the potential consequences of untreated cleft lip/palate malformation, including nutritional and speech problems, social stigma and isolation, and low self esteem.

Where we goOur team of doctors and volunteers donate all services to patients at no charge. To ensure all donated money is used most efficiently to help the children in need, we pay our own airfares to our mission sites in Colombia, Guatemala, Cambodia, Tibet, and Niger.
