WHAT IS THE TRANSITION PLANUNTIL A NEW DIRECTOR IS HIRED?

To provide a smooth transition until a permanent director is hired, the Library Board voted on June 20 to name internal department managers Anastasia Daskalos, Circulation, and Laura Scott, Reader Services, as interim co-directors of the Library.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS FORHIRING A NEW DIRECTOR?

During the same meeting, the Library Board selected members for the Executive Director Search Committee comprising Trustees Karen Burkum, Stevan Dobrilovic, Patrick Lamb, Judith Rayborn and Michael Reardon, and Library employees, Angela Berger, business manager, and Laura Scott, Reader Services Department manager and interim co-director.

The search committee will be tasked with determining the "talents and skills" desired from candidates for the Library's top administrator position; reviewing resumes and interviewing applicants; and recommending a candidate to the full Library Board.

WHAT IS THE STATUS OF THERENOVATION PLAN?

The Board is fully committed to the renovation plan. Before work can begin, the Library must obtain construction permits from the City, which are still under review. Once the renovation has started it should take five to six months to complete.

WILL THE LIBRARY BE CLOSEDDURING THE RENOVATION?

We don’t plan to close the Library for the entire renovation project. However, we may have to close for a few days while work is being done on the lobby and restrooms.

New at the Library

meet the

No more lines. In the coming year, we will be

adding selfCheck™ 1000 kiosks that use radio-frequency

identification (RFID) technology to make borrowing

library items a breeze.

Instead of checking out materials manually at the

circulation desk, you will be able to self-checkout at

stations on the second floor, in Children’s Services

and in the lobby. Of course our staff will be there

to help you with the process, as well as share

their expertise.

Patrons will be able to:• Navigate through the entire self-service process

• Login by typing the account number on screen

or by scanning a physical or virtual barcode card

• Have quick and easy access to their accounts

• Pay their fines or look up any late fees

• Learn about upcoming Library events, programs and recommended reads on the large screen

• Checkout multiple items in one stack

• Choose from one receipt, email receipt or no receipt

We are moving to a new online catalog next spring.

Our consortium, Cooperative Computer Services

(CCS) and its 24 member public libraries, is moving

to the Polaris integrated library system. With 1.1

million bibliographic records, CCS provides access

to technology support and learning to more than

800,000 patrons combined. The Polaris Discovery

Suite will provide access to patrons however and

whenever they need it. Polaris is designed to

enhance the patron experience with improved

self-service features and user-friendly interface.

Look for more details in future issues of the newsletter.

Tony Letrich – Interlibrary Loan/Circulation

Tony, with a BA in English from Northeastern Illinois University has called Park Ridge Public Library home for 28 years. Patrons know him best for his role as coordinator of Interlibrary Loan, the worldwide system that allows patrons to borrow materials from libraries near and far. In the mid-‘80s, after working in a tool- machine shop, sanding down thousands of parts a day, Tony discovered the importance of pursuing his love for books and finding a job he loves—at the Park Ridge Public Library.

What is your favorite thing about working at the Library?

It is always fascinating to see the different items our patrons request through Interlibrary Loan, from the most obscure book to out-of-print DVDs.

What is your favorite book/author?

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle, and any Marvel Comic book from the 1960s by legend Stan Lee.

Who is your hero? Why?

My folks—both gone now—were two of the hardest-working and finest people ever. Also, Captain America: Living Legend of World War II!

What is your proudest accomplishment?

I love to travel and have been to 19 major American cities and almost two dozen national parks.

Getting to Know...

What makes you laugh the most?

Classic TV shows like Andy Griffith and Get Smart. Also, YouTube clips of old Late Night with David Letterman episodes.

How would your friends describe you?

I have a unique ability to find the newest snacks from Hostess and Nabisco before anyone else and share them throughout the Library. I can also be counted on for coordinating big movie outings with friends—so if a new Star Wars is opening they know I’ll be assigning them a seat.

What are your hobbies?

I am addicted to eBay and collect stuff related to movies and comic books. Recent finds include a Batman 7-Eleven slurpee cup, a die-cast James Bond Aston Martin car and a bank of Dr. Zaius from Planet of the Apes. I’ll grow up someday….

Tell us something that no one knows about you.

Although I’m an honorary member of the Frank Sinatra Fan Club, lately I’ve been secretly listening to Perry Como more.

A Thank You to our Donors… Every year the Park Ridge Public Library is able to enhance the quality of its materials and services, thanks to generous donations to our Endowment and Restricted Funds. These gifts come from both individuals and organizations, and support the positive things that libraries represent: access to information, education, and the love of books.

The Library would like to acknowledge the following donors who made contributions during the fiscal year, May 1, 2016 through April 30, 2017.

W ith money raised through their membership drive and book

sales, the Friends of the Library have long played an important role in our success.

The Friends contribute more than $20,000 each year toward reading club prizes, programs, items for the collections, and special equipment not covered by the Library budget.

In addition to their financial support, the Friends donate hundreds of hours each year, sorting book sale donations, setting up, and conducting the two annual sales.

We offer our heartfelt thanks to the Friends for their ongoing support and invite you to become a member. Check out our website for more information!
