Diss Council

New Mayor for Diss.

Diss Town Councillors have elected Neil Howard as Town Mayor for 2013/14. Neil became a Councillor in July 2010 and has since taken a very active role at the Town Council serving as Chairman of a number of Committees including Amenities & Properties and Tourism Leisure & Communities. He has lived in Diss all his life, is married with two children and formerly served the community as a retained fire-fighter. He is currently employed

as Manager of the Co-operative Food Store in Norwich.

During his year in office he is keen to see the completion and progression of a number of major projects currently underway including the installation of new teenage games facilities in the Park, the Mere Boardwalk project and the development of a Neighbourhood Plan for Diss.

He also would like to strengthen links with other parishes close to Diss and see the Town Council take on more services which are currently provided by the district and county council.

He will be raising funds for two charities, Diss First Responders and the Quidenham Branch of East Anglian Children’s Hospices during the year.

Following his election by fellow Councillors at the Annual Council meeting in May, Neil thanked outgoing Mayor Graham Minshull for his excellent work and said “I am honoured to have been chosen as Mayor and am looking forward to serving the Council and the town of Diss.”

Diss Corn Hall to produce first in-house show this Christmas.

Diss Corn Hall will produce its first ever in-house community production this Christmas. The Wind in the Willows, Alan Bennett’s acclaimed adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s classic tale, will be directed by Mark Finbow of resident theatre company The Keeper’s Daughter. With the company specialising in innovative theatre for young people, the production will offer plenty of opportunity for local actors and volunteers of all ages to get involved. ‘This is a great community production of a much-loved favourite and we’re really looking forward to working with local

actors and anybody who would like to be part of the production at the Corn Hall’, said Mark Finbow. ‘If you’d like to discover your inner Ratty or Mr Toad, we’d like to hear from you!’

Angela Sykes, manager of the Corn Hall, said ‘Producing our own show is another exciting step in our development and we hope to involve as many people from the community as possible. The Wind in the Willows is an all-time favourite with adults and children so it is the perfect Christmas entertainment. We have scheduled five performances from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 December but expect tickets to sell fast.’ Tickets are on sale now priced at £9 for adults and children under 16 at £7.

A new Crafts Studio and Shop for Diss

For that special present, visit DesignerMakers@21…

Just opposite the Corn Hall in Diss, in what is still affectionately known as Albrights, is a new, exciting venture for the town. DesignerMakers@21 is home to a group of local, professional craftspeople. Set up by The Diss Corn Hall Trust - and made possible by the generosity of the owners of the building, the Ipswich and Diss Area Quakers - DesignerMakers opened its doors on May 10th.

At present, there are five craftspeople in residence. Annette Rolston and Antonia Leverell make hand-printed cushions, prints and womenswear, Kim Marangon's

Saori Shed offers weaving, spinning and knitwear, Debbie McColl (or Beautifully Boho) does hand painted furniture and Kathy Scott creates unique 3D textile sculpture.

Jean Page of Diss Corn Hall Trust says ‘What is special about the project is not just the chance for people making unique and beautiful objects to work together, but that the public can come in and buy work from the makers themselves. DesignerMakers are looking for more creative craftspeople. Annette Rolston added ’It would be great to get three more people to join us this year. There are so many talented professionals around Diss and this is a fantastic opportunity for them to get their work out into the world.’

DesignerMakers@21 is currently open on Friday from 10-4 or by appointment. Hours will be extended as demand grows.

St. Mary's (Diss) Community Fete

Don't miss this new event on 6th July...

Over the past two months or so I have written briefly about the forthcoming summer fete at the parish church. Since last November four of us have been putting plans together to hold a summer fete with a some what different set up and to do that we decided to invite local businesses to have stalls along side those set up by members of the church family. In most cases this is what we try to do with nearly every event that is staged at St. Mary's in Diss and it really comes under the heading of 'Taking the church to its people' So

lets have a full look of what you can expect to see when this fete gets under way on Saturday 6th July 10am to 2pm. The hosts for this occasion will be none other than PARK RADIO with Chris Moyse who will be giving out information about all the stalls around the church grounds along with playing music in between. Other entertainment for you to enjoy will be the CASTLETON BRASS BAND and FELIX SIMPSON the towns popular singer and musician (pictured) both will have two slots during the four hour event. There will be a READY STEADY COOK competition being judged by two local chefs and if that's starting to make you feel hungry then look what we've got for you to eat. Around mid day a HOG ROAST will be served which proved very popular last year and a FINGER BUFFET run by the W.I. will be on hand throughout the morning.

Now if all that has made you feel thirsty then we have an excellent solution for in the church hall teas and coffees are available but if you want a cold drink then we recommend you visit our REFRESHMENT tent and I know you won't be disappointed when you do. Now for some of the stalls/tables, we have a NAIL and BEAUTY bar for you ladies, Mrs Kiddies lovely cakes, pavlovas and delicious sweet and savoury treats will be on hand for you to treat yourselves, Rags, Bows and Curios a new shop in town will have a table there as well.

The popular BOTTLE STALL along with a grand raffle and many other tables will all be situated around the grounds from the grass area in front of the church office round to the pathway outside the main entrance into the church. There are lots of other things to see and do and I have only itemised

stalls we have never had before or only had once so hopefully you will come along and spend an enjoyable time there browsing around and make time to have your lunch with us. Admission is FREE and what the committee want you to do is have a good time, go and have a chat with Chris at Park Radio, enjoy listening to the brass band and chat to Felix the singer in between his songs. So put this date 6th July firmly in your minds to come to this new community fete which has been put on for the people of Diss and the surrounding areas where people have a perfect opportunity to meet, socialise and hopefully leave at the end of the event having made new friends, that's what all our planning has been about.

Gerry Hosking.

Stop Press NEWSAt the time of submitting this article I have been informed that the person who has agreed to open the fete is Major Graham Goody of 'A' Company The Royal Anglian Regiment (Vikings). This helps keep our strong link with those who received The Freedom of our Town last year.

A “Just So” Lecture

At Diss Decorative & Fine Arts Society.

April’s lecturer was the experienced adult education specialist, Elizabeth Merry, who set the mood by explaining her own fascination with Kipling from her earliest memories and the “Just So” stories. Her presentation melded three elements with the early life of Rudyard Kipling in India and England, The dramatic history of the mogul Indian empire from the 16th Century to the British Raj and the specific journey of Kipling, as a young reporter, across Rajasthan in the late 19th century.

Elizabeth started with the distinct sides of the “Indian” Kipling in his earliest life as a privileged, even spoilt, European in Bombay and, after being sent to school in England, as the “English” boy fostered on the middle class South Coast. Probably a difficult and precocious child he only developed as life became happier at Westward Ho College, the basis of his Stalky & Co. school stories.

In June the final lecture of the season will be “The Glamour Holiday” delivered by Dr. Claire Walsh

Tuesday, 18th June 2013 Roydon Village Hall from 1.30pm. Tea & Coffee is served before the presentation. Car parking is available but may be restricted in poor weather. For more details on lectures and membership, visit www.dissdfas.org.uk

The Rotary Club of Diss and District

Lending with care.

The Rotary Club of Diss and District is renowned for raising and donating money for good causes locally, nationally and internationally. In March this year, the Rotary club joined the ‘Lend with Care’ programme where organisations and individuals lend money to entrepreneurs in developing countries.

One of the great paradoxes of the developing world is that those individuals in most need of banking services and credit are those most likely to lack sufficient collateral to support it. In the past decade, there has been increasing focus on Microfinance as a tool to alleviate poverty and sustain business models. The club felt that, rather than donating money, more use could be made of some of the money collected if it was loaned to small businesses in developing countries.

£300 was used from the club’s general resources and five entrepreneurs each received £60

Grain Brewery to Join the Corn Hall

Diss Corn Hall welcomes local brewery onboard.

The Corn Hall is very pleased to welcome the award-winning Grain Brewery to take over running its bar from the 22nd May. The brewery, based in Alburgh, has won the coveted Best Norfolk Drinks Producer 2012 at the EDP Food & Drink Awards and Champion Beer of Norfolk in 2011 and 2012 from CAMRA.

The revamped bar will offer two or three Grain beers on tap, together with a range of Grain bottles and good quality lagers and cider. Grain will also introduce a selection of popular drinks from their Norwich pub, The Plough, as well as some classics: Best Gin & Tonic in Diss, Bloody Mary, Polish Martini and Kentucky Mule along with a hand-picked range of spirits, wines and soft drinks. Other plans are to offer a small range of bar snacks including Vic’s famous sausage pies and ice cream from fellow local producers, Alburgh

Luxury Ice Cream. The bar will start serving from 6.30pm on event nights for people to relax and enjoy a pre-show drink.

Joint founder of Grain Brewery Phil Halls said, ‘We believe we can provide a great range of drinks and service and really give the bar what it needs to serve the Hall well'.

Commenting on the new partnership, Angela Sykes, manager of the Corn Hall, said: ‘Grain Brewery has a growing fan club in the local area and we’re really excited about bringing their excellent beers, energy and professionalism to the Corn Hall. And, with the earlier opening time of 6.30pm, the bar will be the perfect place to have a relaxing drink with friends before and after events.’

The popular Corn Hall Beer Festival, now in its fifth year, will go ahead on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th October. Visit our website www.disscornhall.co.uk.

towards their project. Within 24 hours, all of our chosen entrepreneurs had obtained 100% financial support from other lenders around the world. The five were chosen because it was felt their project would assist in the development of the area in which they live and work. They are a greengrocer, a farmer, a butcher, a general store and an internet cafe.

As they make monthly repayments of the money we have lent, it will be lent out to other entrepreneurs on the ‘Lend with Care’ programme, thereby helping many businesses by recycling our original £300 investment.

The Co-operative Bank oversees the project by linking with banks in these countries and so far the project is active in Togo, Benin, the Philippines, Cambodia, Ecuador and Bosnia Herzegovina.

Better with ageDogs Trust Snetterton re-homing appeal.

Getting older is usually filled with negative implications but many things we love and enjoy are truly appreciated because of a little age; full bodied red wine, delectable aged cheeses, casseroles eaten the day after cooking, family antiques, classic cars, worn-in jeans, worn-out leather, and of course, compost! Eleven year old Crossbreed, Hamish, is wiser in years but it is just this that makes him so delightful.

Says Kate Brewster, Dogs Trust Snetterton Supporter Relations Officer: “Hamish is

the sweetest chap you could ever hope to meet, he has such a loveable character and gives the best cuddles in the kennels which has secured him many fans amongst staff here at the centre! A perfect gentleman, Hamish came in to us through no fault of his own, he has impeccable manners, knows all his basic commands, and is already housetrained.

“A happy hound, Hamish enjoys short strolls, and would be very content with a life that contained loving people to rub his tummy, and a comfy bed where he can snooze and watch the world go by. Hamish loves people and will make a wonderfully loving and loyal companion once settled in to a new home.”

If you can offer this mature man a loving home please call Dogs Trust Snetterton on 01953 498 377 or visit www.dogstrust.org.uk to find out more.

Bernard replied thanking the stall holders for all their help and support as well as his workmates from the town council. He was then taken by his workmates etc

A family tour of the town

For Pip Abbott's Centenary.

My Dad would have been 100 this year, so the family are planning centenary celebrations. ‘Pip’ Abbott was born in 1913 and came to Diss as a baby when his father, Amos, became waterworks engineer.

Pip was a Corporal in the Royal Engineers and nearly got left behind at Dunkirk. While awaiting embarkation he fell asleep. Realising he wasn’t with them, two pals went back for him. I remember him singing the Hurrah for the CRE (Corps of Royal Engineers) song:

You make fast, I make fast, make fast the dinghy,Make fast the dinghy pontoon. We are marching on to Laffan’s Plain,Where they don’t know sugar from marching order, marching order,Marmalade or jam.

When I was young I had a book about jazzman Acker Bilk and I noted that one of his albums featured the CRE March. I have often wondered why. Now I know that Acker was in the Royal Engineers in Egypt, where he learned to play the clarinet.

I have listened on-line to the regiment playing and singing it. The words are very odd and clearly reflect their days stationed in Africa during the Boer War, with Kaffir expressions:Oshta, oshta, oshta, oshta.Ikona malee, picaninny skoff,Ma-ninga sabenza here’s another off.

The on-line version doesn’t say ‘Marmalade or jam’ but ‘where they don’t know mud from clay’. There were probably various versions. Laffan’s Plain was near the Aldershot garrison.

I thought, if we all got together for Pip Day, we could have a tour of the places associated with Dad’s life and I could have bits of significant music on a tape recorder.

He liked the Easter Hymn from the Cavaliera Rusticana, for instance, having first heard it in a Berlin concert at the end of the war. He and one other soldier were the only ones who took up the offer of free tickets.

Alice works full-time as a carer for Sovereign Homecare.

'After a year in sixth form, I realised that my strengths lay in more practical areas so I left and started working as a carer,' says Alice. 'Now I visit people in their own homes, helping them with their meals, personal care and medication. It was definitely the right thing to do and I love caring. I love the fact that each day is different and that I leave people with a smile on their face.'

For our photoshoot, Alice's hair was styled by Alastair from VAE Hair Salon on St Nicholas St, Diss. He will also be styling her hair for the crowning ceremony at Proms in the Park on Saturday June 15th and opening up especially the

EventsYour Local Out & AboutCombat Paintball Experience

On Sunday 28th April, we made our way to Combat Paintball for my nephew's Junior Paintball Birthday Party, playing against last months winner from Your Local Magazine.

When we arrived we were very impressed by the organised & atmospheric environment which made it feel like we were walking into a real army camp. We were greeted and taken to our designated areas where we were supplied with camouflaged overalls, together with body armour for the children.. Due to our size of party, we were then teamed up with another small group to make a large Yellow Team.

It was then time for the Safety Talk. This was very impressive as it added humour to keep the children interested, however you could tell by this talk that Safety was taken very seriously which was re-assuring. Everyone was issued with a helmet

and although not essential were advised to wear gloves (which were not supplied).

It was time for our first game against the orange team. We were led to the first area where the aim of the game was to shoot at the opposition until there was ‘one man standing’. This game helped everyone adjust to their paintball guns and ease into the event really well.

We then returned to camp for a refreshment break. After what seemed like no time at all, we were being led to our second game ‘Zombie Graveyard’.

The aim of this game was for one team to protect the church against the other team, now known

as Zombies, as they had to try and make their way to the church without being hit. This game was my favourite and I think the children’s favourite also as the time went so quick before we were all back at camp for another break.

The last game was called ‘Footy Frenzie’ where prior to the game the adults were taken to one side and given a smoke grenade each. We were then taken to another area, where the Footy Frenzie began, the idea of this game was to get the very large football into your opponents net without being hit….. easier than it sounds, especially when the smoke grenades were being let off all over the place!

Sadly overall the yellow team didn’t win however with comments from the children such as ‘that was awesome’, ‘epic’, ‘cool’, ‘I’m going to do this for my birthday’ who needs to win when they had such a great day.

To end our day at Combat Paintball a team photograph was taken and placed on their Facebook page which was a lovely momento of our great day.

Overall the children had an absolutely fantastic day, a brilliant way to get the children and adults away from their console games and outside in the fresh air.

Exciting times for local Indie Rock Band

Success for Secret from Richard.

Local Indie Rock band Secret from Richard have been quietly taking the local music scene by storm.

Made up of our four lads from Attleborough - Shaun Banham, 19, Jason Sturman, 20, Matt Brookson, 18 and Jesse Baker, 16 - the band have been together for a year and half.

In February they did Attleborough proud by winning a Battle of the Bands competition in Lowestoft. The boys had drawn the short straw and had to play first but stormed through their 30-minute set playing a mix of covers and original material. Supported by a brilliant crowd, they nailed it!

The fantastic prize included ten days in a recording studio at Timeshift Studios in Halesworth, a professional photo short and a dedicated website.

They are now through to the semi-final of a second Battle of the Bands competition organised by Kings Lynn radio station, KLFM. Their track will be played live on air with listenings choosing the eventual winner.

Secret from Richard's influences include Foals, Bloc Party and Bombay Bicycle Club.

On July 12th they will be supporting These Ghosts at Open in Norwich.

'Our ultimate ambition is to go as far as we can and get to play huge festivals like Reading,' says guitarist Shaun.

You can follow the band on Facebook and Twitter.

A Summer Play Idea from Imps Make Ice Paints.

School summer holidays are looming on the horizon!

Amongst the lovely days out, we all need some cheap play days at home too. Here’s a cool tried-and-tested play idea from Imps for you to try!

Ice Paints You need; Plastic cups, paint, water, and some short sticks (e.g old pencils or pieces of dowel, just sand the ends to ensure no sharp edges), sticky tape.

What to doHalf fill each cup with paint of your choice. Add water, not right to the top, you need room to stir! Stir well, then pop a stick in each cup, using two long strips of tape either side to hold it more-or-less upright. Freeze. When you’re ready to paint, cut the cup and

sticky tape and ease them off. Use them outside on big paper (brown wrapping paper is cheap, large and recommended!). To begin with they draw like crayons, but as they begin to melt things change……lots to talk about with your preschooler, but be warned, this can get very messy!!!

Weddings...Summertime

Wendy Aiken PhotographyYour wedding is such an important day and capturing the spirit

and atmosphere of your day is essential.

I pride my s e l f

in telling your story in photos, quietly taking natural images that when you look back on them provoke the emotions of the day.

I have wanted to be a photographer since I was just 12 years of age and because it's always been my passion this shines through in my work. I'm always learning and taking on new challenges. I do studio, portraits, corporate, events, weddings and lifestyle shoots. Please contact me if you’re

interested in any of the above.I'm a local person, currently

living in Hoxne, married with two children and many pets!

My husband Ben is a graphic designer specialising in logo creation, marketing and print solutions. He also designs and prints bespoke wedding stationery from the save the date to the seating plan and place settings. We work really well together and can provide a joint package of wedding stationery and photos.

Always choose your

photographer carefully, you need to feel comfortable on the day with them. It's a special relationship where you know they understand what you expect of them and trust that they won't let you down on the day. I would always recommend that you meet up before your big day and let them know any special photos you require, family groups etc. Talk to other couples who have used that photographer, let them share their experiences and ask to see their photos. Remember there are no 2nd chances to capture one

of the most i m p o r t a n t days of your life so make sure you choose the right photographer for you.

I photograph large weddings to intimate weddings, locally and further afield. You can see more of my work at www.wendyaikenphotography.co.uk and if you are interested in bespoke wedding stationery, contact Ben Aiken creative design.

The Perfect Package for your Perfect Day

CLS Hair & Photography Ltd is an amalgamation of a hairdressing salon and photographic studio situated on Sawmills Road. CLS Hair has been running as a hairdressing salon since October 2011. CLS Photography will be moving

into the unit next door this month, Bringing 35 years of experience.

The business is the concept of owners Connie Sharman and Ian also known as Mik Kibble. Hairdresser Connie and photographer Ian have always been interested in merging the two industries to offer one unique package to potential customers. For brides, this provides the perfect opportunity to have your hair done and photos taken in one exclusive package, tailor-made to suit your individual needs.

CLS Hair owner Connie Sharman is just 21. 'I've always loved hairdressing and managed to find myself an apprenticeship in a local salon while I was working towards my A-Levels,' says Connie. 'After A-Levels, I completed my training at the salon and became a qualified stylist. But I'd always had the dream of opening my own salon so when the opportunity became available I jumped at the chance.'

At 19 Connie decided she was up to the challenge. Although I was confident in my hairdressing skills, I knew nothing about running a business and had to learn quickly on the job.'

We can photograph as much - or as little of your day - as you would like. We can even start our wedding packages from the day of your hair trial and take it right through the day itself to the ceremony and evening reception. Come with your bridal party to CLS where you can have your hair done professionally and beautifully by Connie and her team. Ian can then meet you at the wedding venue to photograph the rest of your special day.

Or what about capturing your hen night on camera? Why not come with your hens to CLS to have your hair done and photos taken before you head out to party the night away? Tailor made wedding hair and photography packages start from as little as £75.00. Different styles of photography are available including Sepia, Black & White and Colour.

On your wedding day, both your hair and your photographs are incredibly important. Now one Diss business has come up with a unique way to make sure that both aspects are perfect.

But achieve the skills she did and CLS Hair went from strength to strength, building a reputation as an excellent salon in the town.

'This February Ian came on board and we're really excited about combining our two skills to offer wedding and occasion hair packages,' says Connie.

Alongside her work with Ian, Connie and her staff will still continue to offer all the usual hairdressing services such as cuts, blow dry’s and dyes. They will also soon be offering an extensions service. Continuing to provide a professional service and a friendly atmosphere where everyone is welcome,' explains Connie. 'We will just now be able to offer a hair and photography package for all special occasions, inclusive of your Hen night memories.

someone wants the convenience of both through the same company we can offer the perfect service for the whole bridal party. As well as wedding photography, I will be offering all the usual photographic services in the studio from portraits through to passport photos. I can also provide photos in a variety of formats from hard copies to digital images on a disk or USB. We also catalogue and keep all images taken in case customers want to return to us to find an image in the future.'

Ian Kibble has been a photographer for 35 years.

'It all started when I was seven years old and started playing around with my dad's camera,' says Ian. 'I went on to study photography in sixth form and at college. For the past 24 years I've been

photographing weddings. I like my photography to have a relaxed, fun and informal feel to capture the real memories of such a special day. I document the day as it happens rather than just focusing on the usual group shots which are only one part of the whole experience. Alongside my wedding photography, I also take family, child and couple’s portraits - anything that the customer requires!

So how did CLS Hair & Photography come about?

'I was actually a customer of Connie's and one day we got chatting about our shared love of hair, fashion and photography,' says Ian. 'Both of us felt that our skills complemented each other and together we could create something really special for our customers.

When the unit next door to CLS Hair became available, it was the perfect opportunity to make their dream a reality.

'I'd always wanted a studio to work from and being next door to the hair salon, with an adjoining door, means we can offer people the whole hair and photography package without them having to leave the

building,' says Ian. 'We are very flexible with the packages we offer and can tailor-make them to suit individual needs. It might be that someone wants their hair done without photos or someone to photograph their wedding without coming here to have their hair done - that's fine. But if

Drink&Visit The Auberge Restaurant with rooms (see page 24).

For fine dining in a beautiful setting… FOOD HYGIENE RATING

0 1 2 3 4 5VERY GOOD

The Auberge, a family-run restaurant with rooms, is an award-winning gem located on the A140 at Yaxley.

Crowned Winner of Gourmet Britain UK 2012 – Restaurant with rooms, the Auberge offers some of the finest food in Suffolk.

Upon arrival, we received a very warm welcome from owner Dee Stenhouse and son Jon. We were also introduced to future son-

in-law Mark who was our chef for the night.

The menu was interesting and varied. For starter we chose Crispy shredded chicken, Asparagus & Gruyere Souffle and Smoked Trout and Watercress tart. Each dish was beautifully presented and left us excited at what was to follow. For main we had Rib Eye of Steak with Bearnaise sauce & veg, Breast of Gressingham Duck with tangy orange sauce on Sarlardaise potatoes, Blanquette de Veal finished with cream & button mushrooms

& tarragon buttered new potatoes, Seared King Scallops served with a savoury mango sauce and rice Pilaf. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the food really was some of the nicest each of us had ever tasted. The portions were ample and each item was cooked to perfection.

For dessert we had Tropical Fruit Crepe – a large pancake filled with sautéed Pineapple & Banana, topped with rum sauce and rum and raisin ice cream, Crème Brulle and Cheese and Biscuits which included local, regional and British Cheese

including Shropshire Blue, Suffolk Brie, Suffolk Gold and Manchego with quince jelly. Everyone went down a treat.

Dee recommended a gorgeous bottle of red wine which complemented the meal perfectly.

The Auberge really is a very special place with finishing touches that set it apart from the rest. It’s the perfect place for an intimate meal, a family gathering or that special occasion.

Enthusiasts&I collect ... Susie Cooper Ceramics

We need you!Are you a collector? Then we would like to hear from you!

We need people to write about their collections in the magazine. Whatever you collect, we want to know;

you can even write it anonymously if you like. Please ring 01379 642044, email [email protected]

or write to us at 3 Hales Yard, Diss, IP22 4AF.

I started collecting about 12 years ago whilst on holiday on the Isle of Wight. Looking for a memento of the holiday I decided not to go for the usual trinkets but visited a couple of antique shops instead and found a small set of Susie Cooper tea wares, which I bought. This then sparked the need to research and find out who was Susie Cooper?

Susie Cooper was born in 1902 and attended the local schools in Burslem, Staffordshire until she was

15 when the war effort took over. She joined up for evening classes at the local Art College in 1918 and was awarded a Scholarship in 1919. Here she met Edward Gray a partner in AE Gray, manufacturers of ceramics and joined his company in 1922.

At this time the company were working on some new designs for the British Industry Fair and Susie was asked to paint these pieces, known as Gloria Lustre, (see picture of plate with Lion: this is signed by Susie Cooper herself and probably painted by her). This is where her career really began. Susie was soon promoted to Head Designer and was given the privilege of her work being stamped ‘Designed by Susie Cooper.’

These designs were entering the Art Deco years where her

wares were competing with those of Clarice Cliff. The patterns

became big and bold with Geometric designs

such as Moon and Mountains (see

pic). Leaving Grays

to set up her own business in 1929 was the birth of the Susie Cooper brand name where after a few setbacks she went from strength to strength.

My preferred period for her work is the hand painted era around 1932 – 1935. Here she produced some short production runs. One of which ‘Puck’(see picture of Cubist shape tea pot, Butter dish and Milk jug) depicts a character from Shakespeare’s ‘A Mid Summer Nights Dream’ but there are also ‘Homestead’ depicting a red roof house set in open country side, ‘Caravan’ showing a Gypsy cart and ‘Panorama’ where a m o t o r i s e d vehicle is on a country road. These short production runs are quite sought after and very scarce. Looking at the

main picture, there are numerous hand-painted items showing some of the superb flowing designs with a range of tea and coffee sets all of the ceramic shapes created and manufactured by Susie Cooper.

She also created a very successful range of Nursery Ware items including cups, bowls, plates of which some were divided to allow for various foods on the

child’s plate (see picture). These wares were

often painted with an individual name and were given as Party presents for

birthdays etc. As earthenware

products became more expensive Bone China was the new medium to work in and Susie excelled in developing patterns for these new products.

Susie Cooper produced somewhere in the region of 2000 patterns before her death in 1992.

Searching for her work is now becoming much harder as the

more interesting patterns are being held onto

or maybe Clarice Cliff collectors are turning away from her wares as they become increasingly more expensive.

&WellbeingCalorie Deficit The real way to lose fat.

The body stores fat in response to a calorie surplus (eating more than you burn). Simples! A calorie deficit is the method of making weight loss possible. It forces your body to use fat stores for energy causing weight loss.

A calorie deficit is a state in which you burn more calories than you eat. For example, if you burn 2,500 calories per day but only eat 2,000, you have created a deficit of 500 calories per day. Exercise helps you create a bigger calorie deficit without having to starve yourself. Incorporate cardiovascular exercise into your routine 3-5 times per week lasting 30-60 minutes per session. Though strength training is often

overlooked during weight loss, it builds muscle which increases your metabolic rate and creates a larger calorie deficit. Incorporate strength training into your routine 3-4 times per week.

Dieting alone simply requires you to eat less. This is a great opportunity to eliminate unhealthy foods such as empty calories from your intake. Empty calories are foods that are high in energy (calories) but low in nutrients

Some advice…1. The first step is figuring out how many calories your body burns each day. The calorie calculator is a good place to start. It estimates your calorie needs based on your

size, age, gender and physical activity level. 2. Slowly build up a calorie deficit by moderately cutting your intake and increasing your physical activity level3. Spread your calories out regularly throughout the day to create up to 5 smaller meals a day4. Get a programme designed at the gym to burn those extra calories 5. Try using a Calorie counting app on your mobile phone to keep track of your daily intake and an exercise log app to record your calorie burn6. When you have reached your target weight loss you must then re-balance calories in versus

calories out, re-do the calorie calculator to suit your new lifestyle of exercise and healthy eating.

What happens when calories are too low?1. Muscle mass is broken down for energy (catabolism). 2. Metabolic rate will begin to drop (typically) after 3 days of very low calories - this is related to, and compounded by the loss of muscle mass. 3. With very low calories you risk sluggishness, nutritional deficiencies, fatigue, and often irritability. You are completely set-up for a regain in fat if you suddenly return to your previous eating patterns.

Charli's HouseThe renovation is complete.

Homes Gardens&

So here it is. My house is done. Apart from lots of accessorising I have a home. But as they say, is a house ever done? It's been a roller coaster of emotions but I wouldn't change it for the world.

Kitchen - here we knocked through to make one large

open plan kitchen diner. We also moved the back door to create French doors that opened straight down the garden. Perfect

for planning your garden r e n o v a t i o n s with your morning cup of tea...sorry Dad!

Bathroom - This was another room with

a complete overhaul. We removed the outside store

to create one large room, complete with a modern

b a t h r o o m suite.

Lounge - this was the only room that didn't get attacked. We reworked and installed central heating and used a geometric wallpaper to create a striking wall. The

fireplace is my next task! Bedroom - In here, we had

to replaster the ceiling, add

lighting and fix the large sash windows. I used very subtle grey tones in here to create a calm and relaxing bedroom. But I'm super excited about accessorising this room.

Fireplace - This fireplace didn't exist at first so we knocked through to create it as part of the dining space. Mirror tiles on the back wall, candles and fairy lights create a feature of the fireplace.

Keep Yer Heel Down Bor!Wotcha!...

How are yer diddlin? I've seen plenty of you out in your gardens digging out those 'wild flowers' that I keep telling you to leave alone!

I bought some asparagus in Redgrave recently and it reminded me of the time when I grew it at Blo Norton. In the picture, the plot in the foreground (not under cloches) is the very piece of land where I planted it.

The shadow, incidentally, is of an oak tree in which my brother Doug and I used to sit and pelt passers-by with stuff. Not really. More likely hide from our dad if he wanted us to work!

I remember two things about that asparagus crop: (1) I mulched it with the smelliest load of muck I can ever remember and, (2) I started harvesting the shoots a little too early (you're supposed to give the crop three years before cutting) and consequently received a note from our salespeople in Covent Garden that the spears were on the small side. I wasn't best pleased. And I don't suppose they were overjoyed either. Whatever you do, don't plant the crowns where you've got serious perennial weed problems – especially mare's tail – as when the asparagus produces its rather attractive ferns you won't be able to tell the difference!

Dew yew keep on troshin and remember, asparagus crowns are either male or female. Male plants are more prolific and produce better spears. Nuff said.

Allotments Blooming!In Bressingham and Fersfield.

Bressingham and Fersfield Allotment Association have been hard at work in the last few months, weeding and digging to prepare new plots for aspiring allotmenteers.

Association chair, Michelle Lanchester of Bressingham has a long standing family connection with the site as her Grandfather held a plot there many years ago.

“The site did fall out of use for a time.” she explained. “But I really wanted get it up and running again so that more families could enjoy the benefits of growing their own fruit and veg.” Michelle persuaded the Parish Council to allow her to take a plot in 2007, another tranche of plots were opened up and let in 2010 and now, the remainder of the site has been cleared and a further 12 plots are ready for new tenants.

“The plots are in good shape,” said Michelle. “They've been cleared of weeds and are ready to go. It's a lovely site, in a beautiful countryside location. There are quite a few young families here and it's really nice to see the children getting involved and learning where their food comes from.”

Anyone interested in taking on a plot can call Michelle on 07824 515801 or Karl on 07736345006.

Norfolk Deaf Association Hearing Support ServiceCelebrates Twentieth Anniversary.

Norfolk Deaf Association’s (NDA) Hearing Support Service (HSS), established in 1993, celebrated its 20th anniversary on Monday 22 April with a tea party for the service’s volunteers.

Over the last year 6296 people, comprising 7649 appointments, including 580 new referrals, benefited from the service, which is delivered by trained volunteers.

Volunteers help people affected by hearing loss, advising them on the use, cleaning and maintenance

of hearing aids. Home visits are offered for those with limited mobility, and there are 50 static clinics and 28 mobile clinics, provided by the Listen Here! Bus, in towns and villages in Norfolk. The mobile clinic also visits 25 sheltered housing complexes. The timetables for both the static and mobile clinics can be downloaded from the website at www.norfolkdeaf.org.uk, or tel. 01603 404440 (voice/minicom).

The HSS is NDA’s largest service and is supported by the Norfolk & Norwich NHS University Hospital, which provides supplies and training. The service also receives some funding from North Norfolk and Central and South Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Groups.

In addition NDA runs an Assistive Listening Devices advice and support clinic on Thursday mornings between 10am and 1pm at the NDA headquarters, 217 Silver

Road, Norwich NR3 4TL. This is ideal for anyone thinking of buying equipment to enhance hearing. A wide variety of equipment is on display including induction loops, wireless listeners, flashing and vibrating doorbells, vibrating alarm clocks, smoke alarms, telephone amplifiers and mobile phones.

Aliona Laker, NDA Manager said: “Our Hearing Support Service is delivered by 36 very hard working volunteers, co-ordinated by Pam Spicer. Four new volunteers have been trained during the last year and welcomed to the team, but we always need more volunteers to help us with this vital activity.”

Diana Gee, HSS volunteer said: “I went deaf in my twenties and am now in my seventies. I moved to Norfolk 20 years ago and the help I received from the HSS made a big difference. I have been a volunteer for 16 years now. The support from NDA means a great deal to people

Looking to rent? Got a property to rent out?

Try Find me a Rental in Norfolk…

Starting any new business can be difficult. But when you're a 20-year-old single mum with no business experience or qualifications, it becomes even more of a challenge. But not for Hannah Day. Hannah has just launched her own self-funded property rental website called Find Me a Rental in Norfolk.

The website is similar to Right Move but only covers Norfolk. Hannah, who lives in Dickleburgh, got the idea after struggling to find somewhere to rent herself.

'I noticed a gap online for a simple, cheap and easy-to-use website that only advertises property to rent straight from the owner in a specific area,' she says.

Landlords and potential

tenants can post their offered and wanted adverts on the site and use it to find each other.

'I struggled through school and college but did not want to be the kind of person who relies on benefits in order to raise my child,' says Hannah. 'Many people wrote me off but I'm determined to make a success of this business and prove them wrong.'

Hannah is now looking for landlords to advertise their properties to rent through her site. We wish her all the very best. To find out more log onto www.findmearentalinnorfolk.co.uk

The legend lives on in Diss with the New Peugeot 208 GTi

The hottest hatchback of 2013 has now arrived at Pat Lewis Peugeot in Palgrave, Diss.

Peugeot has channelled the spirit of the much-loved 205 GTi – affectionately dubbed as Peugeot’s original ‘pocket rocket’ back in 1984 – into this latest model, putting motorists into overdrive in anticipation ahead of its arrival.

The Peugeot 208 GTi’s style is mischievous, eye catching and slick, creating a model full of playful power and panache. Each detail is designed with style in mind, including the black and chrome ‘chequered flag’ grille, unique 17inch diamond Carbon alloys, body-coloured rear spoiler and double exhaust tailpipes.

While the DAB digital radio and multi-function colour touchscreen welcome the driver into a new technological age, the new GTi model will never forget its predecessor.

Designed to appeal to driving enthusiasts with a perfect blend of performance and style, the new

three-door model is enhanced by a new light signature at the front. This is refined by C-shaped indicators and halogen headlights – designed to give the impression of a cat’s eye – combined with LEDs in the taillights.

The design creates a model which is light, powerful and very quick. Agile and reactive, the Peugeot 208 GTi balances from one turn to the next with precision, delivered by firm steering which directs the front suspension perfectly, leaving the driver in complete control with every curve.

Six close-ratio gears see the engine draw the full potential from the chassis on the road, with the iconic red line detail on the Sports seats nodding to the GTi’s old interior. The red, black and satin chrome colour scheme is used throughout, complementing the red, black, aluminium and white body colours available.

Driver support is assured by black seatbelts – with red detail – allowing an excellent driving position that is clear and comfortable.

Pat Lewis, dealer principal, said: “We’ve been looking forward to the Peugeot 208 GTi’s arrival since it was unveiled at last year’s Paris Motor Show and we can’t wait to showcase this breath-taking new model to our customers in Diss. It’s the regeneration of a legendary car and we know that its arrival will create a real buzz among car enthusiasts.

“It’s the perfect modern model for the style-conscious and sporty driver. It promises an exhilarating drive while also making sure it stays loyal to its roots. Drivers of the 205 GTi will remember it’s ‘pocket rocket’ status fondly and we hope today’s drivers of the new model will look back

and think the same in years to come.”With a competitive pricing

strategy, the range starts from £18,896 for the 1.6 litre model. Available in Bianca White, Nera Black, Aluminium and Rioja Red, the 208 GTi delivers economically was well as on a performance level, with CO2 emissions from just 139g/km.

For more information or for details on any of the models in the Peugeot range, please contact Pat Lewis Ltd on 01379 641100 or visit the dealership at Rose Lane Garage. Alternatively, visit www.patlewispeugeot.co.uk
