Jodi Geistfeld—2009 Hall of Fame Inductee

Coach and Science Teacher, Jodi Geistfeld was in-ducted into the MLHS Athletic Hall of Fame at the 2009 Spring Recognition Banquet. Athletic Director Tom Taylor introduced the 2009 inductee saying, ―For the last four years, the MLHS Athletic Hall of Fame inductee has been one of our many talented athletes. This year‘s inductee, however, was not an MLHS Knight Athlete. In fact, in high school she played volleyball, basketball, and soft-ball for one of our rivals. She went on to college and played basketball for one season at St. Cloud State before finishing a teaching and coaching degree at Mankato State University. Upon completing her degree, she be-gan teaching at Martin Luther High School where she has also been a two-season coach for the last eleven years. ―In her first season as a Vol-leyball coach, she inherited a raw group of girls who went 1 – 18. In the past four seasons, she has her team playing close to 500 ball. Her best season was in 2007 where the team went 12 – 12 - 1. ―As a basketball coach, she has totaled 101 wins, the most

ever by an MLHS coach in any sport. This 2008-09 sea-son, with a young group of players, the Knights finished with a record of 17-13, and made it to the Section Final game before being defeated by Cedar Mountain Comfrey. Along the way, they upset the higher ranked GHEC Mustangs in a game that was both well coached and well played. This is the farthest any Martin Luther athletic team has ever gone in the post season. ―In basketball, Coach Geistfeld has a winning per-centage of 37% with an over-all record of 101 – 171. Al-though this number is not very impressive, it is impor-tant to remember that we are a school that is small in num-bers competing against schools with many more ath-letes. Even though numeri-cally we are at a disadvan-tage, no longer, are the Knights the doormat of the conference. ―In fact, for the last six seasons, our teams have been very competitive and as a result, they are to be re-spected. This turn around is largely in part due to the countless hours of hard work, and dedication, put in by our 2009 Athletic Hall of Fame nominee, Jodi Geist-feld.‖ Coach Geistfeld ac-cepted her award to two standing ovations and enthu-siastic cheers from students, alumni and adults. In her humble manner she expressed her apprecia-tion by saying (in part), ―The

legendary UCLA basketball coach, John Wooden said, ‗What you are as a person is far more important than what you are as a basketball player.‘ ―In the heat of competition winning is important, how-ever, learning about life les-sons is so much more impor-tant. If you ask any of my for-mer or current athletes ‘easy‘ is not one word that they would use to describe me. There is a reason for this, nothing in life comes easy. It gives me great pleasure to see former athletes and hear about the contributions they are making to society once they leave this gym. I hope that, along with their families, that I had something to do with their successes. ―For eight months out of the year I am with these young ladies five days a week. I am not only teaching them a game but my goal as well is to influence them into becoming intelligent, respect-ful and kind young women. ―I have had a great oppor-tunity to be a varsity coach at MLHS. My fellow coaches and I have strived for excel-lence both on and off the court. As the great coach Vince Lombardi said ‗the quality of a person‘s life is in direct proportion to their com-mitment to excellence regard-less of their chosen field of endeavor.‘‖ Congratulations, Coach Geistfeld! Your commitment to excellence and rapport with young people is illustrated in the classroom as well as on the athletic court.

The EF Foundation has selected MLHS over all schools nationwide as “2008-2009 School of the Year” in honor of our excellence in serving foreign exchange students. The Kirk and Marie Morris family were recognized for hosting Viki Racz from Hungary for the whole year and Miriam Pucker from Germany for the first semester. Dan and Lois Gahler and Dus-tin hosted Florian Kaempfer, Germany for the first semester.

―It is the wonderful host families that we have in our school who are willing to open their homes and their hearts to these students, and our dedicated teachers who so generously give the ‗extra‘s‘ needed to help our exchange students academically that have made it possible for MLHS to receive this award,‖ says Guidance Director, Sharon Patrick.

Thank you to families who have hosted foreign exchange students in the past: Larry & Annette Bremer, Dan & Lois Gahler, Lyle & Bonnie Wolle, Rev. Nathan & Lori Rusert, Robert & Faith Sitzman, Roger & Pam Carlson, Barb & Leonard Reinke, Mary & Ron Reinke, Elroy & Betty Mumme and others.

MLHS is looking for host families for the up-coming school year. If you would be willing to open your home, please let us know ASAP!

Leah passed away after a short battle with cancer. She was teaching at the Center for Gen-erations, St John‘s Lutheran Min-istries in Billings, Montana where she loved teaching her ―kiddos‖. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to her family. A full obituary is on the MLHS website. 1990–Chad Milow married Betsy Randow on December 13th, 2008. They are making their home in Greendale, WI. 1992-Adam Quade, TSgt, and wife, Kelli, currently live in Dayton, OH where he is stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB. They have 2 boys Tyler (4) and Braden (3) Adam works in the Biosci-ences and Protection Division of the Air Force Research Labora-tory as a Non-Commissioned Offi-cer In Charge of Biomarker De-tection and Analysis. He was no-tified that he will be promoted from Technical Sergeant, to Sec-ond Lieutenant. He will be in-ducted into the Biosciences Ser-

vices Corps and working as the Officer In Charge of a hospital laboratory at a state-side Air Force Base to be determined soon. [email protected] 1995: Susan (Burmeister) and her husband, Pastor Darren Ol-son have a new son. Luke Roger was born on June 3rd. 1996-Bridget (Surdick) (96) and Marty Thiel were blessed with a baby boy on April 15, 2009. Mala-chi Martin Thiel weighed 7 pounds, 3 oz. He was 21 inches long. He has two sisters, Mikaela, 3, and Rebekah, 1. 1997– God‘s blessings to Leah (Meixell) and Craig Toerpe on the birth of their son, Aaron Joseph, born on March 30th. Rachael Flohrs and Nick Janssen were married June 6th at Christ Chapel, Gustavus Adol-phus College, St. Peter. Johanna Gronewald is the 2008-09 Covenant Award winner for Augustana College. She was chosen as a representative of Augustana‘s core value of Chris-tian faith. ―Let us go out into this world and let our actions speak for what we believe,‖ she said. ―We can go to all the religion classes, read all of the Bible we want and pray, but unless we live out our lives in a way that makes God‘s love evident, we have not captured the true life of a Chris-tian.‖ Kaitlin Leimer graduated Magna Cum Laude from Briar Cliff University, Sioux City, IA with a Bachelor of Science Degree. 2006-Caitlin Gronewald spent 3 weeks in Ghana, Africa on a mis-sion trip through Campus Cru-sade for Christ. Even though the African people are very poor, she found their generosity and enthu-siasm to talk about Christ a star-tling contrast to the American cul-ture and attitudes. 2007-Amanda Gahler was able to witness history taking place by attending the Presidential Inaugu-ration in January. She was able to view the proceedings from a great vantage point by getting up at 3:00 a.m. to beat the crowd. Amanda spent several weeks this spring studying in France. Attention Parents and Grandparents: Is America starving its children? With all the controversy about childhood obesity today, one would think that America‘s children would be the healthi-est children in the world. There are more restau-rants in our towns than there are churches. People think nothing of going out to eat sev-eral times a week. Grocery stores are filled aisle after aisle with a bigger variety of foods and treats than most people can imagine. America‘s cupboards are full of prepared foods, snacks and treats. We live in a land of plenty, yet I believe too many of our children are malnourished. How can I say such a thing? When God gave parents that precious baby, He gave them a delicate body to feed, wash and protect. But He also gave them the child‘s soul to care for, something that can‘t be seen, yet something that will live long beyond the life of the child‘s physical body. A soul exists for eternity. Society has conditioned parents to worry about the physical side of caring for their children. Parents are condi-tioned that they must provide the best food, clothing, health care, braces, toys, computers, cameras, ipods, cell phones, dance lessons, camps, etc, for their children or they are bad parents. Who is really writing those messages? Parents are overlooking the most important duty they have as parents.

Grandparents: Encourage your children to send their chil-dren to a Lutheran school. The weakest excuse I‘ve heard yet is when parents tell me they can‘t afford to send their children to a Lutheran school. Recently I spoke with someone associated with Faith Lutheran Jr/Sr High School, Las Vegas, NV. He told me that Las Vegas has the highest unemployment rate and the most foreclosures in the na-tion. Yet he knows of MANY parents who are giving up their homes so that they can keep their children enrolled in the Lutheran school. Maybe the people in ―sin city‖ know more than we do about what our children really need to not only survive—but to thrive! Parents: Don‘t be compla-cent and falsely believe that your child will be ―OK.‖ Do all that you can to en-sure where your child will spend eternity by sending them to a Lutheran school, pre-school through high school.

Should Children Be Fed Only Once a Week?

An editorial by Marge Thiesse, Director of Development Martin Luther High

That duty is nurturing their children‘s souls. Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” -John 6:35 If humans need to eat three or more times a day to survive, what makes us think that our souls can survive by being fed the ‗one thing need-ful for eternal salvation‘ once a week or less? In one year, children spend 28.8% of their time asleep, 25% in school, 45% in other activities and 1.2% of their time in church—feeding their souls. Our Lutheran schools pro-vide parents with the most ex-ceptional (and wonderful) op-portunity to richly nourish chil-drens‘ souls by increasing that 1.2% to 26.2%. Nourishing the soul should-n‘t stop when we are baptized, or at confirmation, or even at age 95. Nourishing the soul should be an “until death do us part” thing.” Parents: Refocus on what is really best for your children. Is it really clothes, toys, trips, camps and ―things‖?

Dear Friends in Christ, It has been a busy last few months here at MLHS. The boys and girls basketball teams posted improvements over previous years‘ records with the girls‘ team winning subsection 2A—a first for any MLHS sports team. MLHS wrestler Tucker Freeman improved his record and took second at state. The softball and baseball teams ended their seasons with winning records. But it hasn‘t been all sports that have been busy and excelling at MLHS. The MLHS Music department has also been very busy. The Band earned three superior ratings at Large Group Instrumental Contest and had five students in the Honors Band. The Band and Concert Choir inspired their audience at its annual Sacred Concert and again displayed their talents at the Spring Pops Concert. The rummage sale and dinner auction brought a flurry of activity and were great successes. Now our seniors are look-ing ahead to graduation. Though we have been busy and have many successes in many different areas of academic and extra-curricular life, we continue to give thanks to our Lord who certainly con-tinues to bless MLHS in many ways. A large part of the success of Martin Luther High School is the way in which the Lord uses you in support of the school. Through your prayers, volunteerism, and financial support, MLHS is able to carry out our mission statement which reads: ―to help young people leave active Christian lives and to excel academically through Christian training and nurturing.‖ This year marks MLHS twenty-fifth anniversary. As part of this anniversary we have launched a special campaign to help support the many aspects of secondary Christian education. The 25-25-25 Campaign is designated to provide student tuition aid, purchase religious educational programs, supply funds for classroom resources, aid in facility improvements and much more. The program is quite simple. You sign up by going on line at www.martinlutherhs.com and click on ―keeping MLHS strong‖ (25-25-25). Your $25.00 contribution will be automatically withdrawn from your checking ac-count on the 25th of each month for the next 25 months. That is all that is to it. The great thing about 25-25-25 is that it brings needed income into MLHS on a monthly basis. As of this time we have 52 individuals signed up. Each additional contribution helps MLHS maintain its high level of educational excellence. An additional 50 people would generate $30,000.00 for the next two years which would greatly help in offsetting the rising cost of Christian education. (Imagine what could be done if 100 more people would contribute?) We diligently look for ways to keep our expenses down, and yet provide the best possible Chris-tian education. Due to the uncertain economic times, at their last meeting the delegates voted to freeze all staff and faculty salaries for the 2009-2010 school year. By doing so it is hopeful that MLHS can keep its tuition at affordable level so that all student can have access to an exemplary secondary Christian education. Your donation to the 25-25-25 campaign will help make this possible and continue the vi-tal mission of MLHS. If it is within your means, please go online and sign up for the 25-25-25 campaign. We have many things to be thankful for at MLHS. One of the greatest blessings is the support from you. We thank you for your continued prayers, your volunteer service, and your financial sup-port of Martin Luther High School. Sincerely, Robert B. Patrick, Principal

I think it is a good thing. ― When asked what he would say to an 8th grader who is looking for a high school, Brady said, ―At MLHS you can talk about your faith any time. That is why I think

everyone should choose MLHS. It is a freedom that is important.‖ Brady works 5 or 6 after-noons a week milking cows and earning a paycheck. ―I think it important to give to God‘s ministries. I‘m earning money and I just thought I should give back to God.‖ You are invited to make a difference at MLHS by joining the 25/25/25 Campaign to strengthen MLHS for the fu-ture. Lorenz and Ezurina Meier Estate Gift Will Give MLHS Floors a New Look

For as long as anyone can remember when something needed to be built or repaired, Lorenz Meier of Ormsby was the person to ask. His talent for woodworking can be found throughout the halls and classrooms at MLHS. Both Lorenz and Ezurina had a strong passion for Lutheran Education and gave tirelessly of their time, talent and treasure to MLHS. They attended almost every fundraiser, helped at the rummage sales (even when it was physically very difficult), generously gave to special projects and the general operating fund and remembered MLHS in their estate plans. Their family asked that their last estate gift be used for something special that would be a long-lasting tribute to their love of MLHS. This final gift was designated to be used for building improvement. This generous gift is a Legacy of Love that is sincerely ap-preciated. It provides something special at MLHS that comes only because Lorenz and Ezurina remembered MLHS in their estate plans. The Board of Directors authorized the finishing of the ce-ment floors. The entry, lobby area, some halls and the bath-rooms will soon have a PolyTek coating in royal blue and gray. This durable coating will give the cement floors a bright new look, make them safer and easier to clean. A plaque recogniz-ing Lorenz & Ezurina‘s donation and all donors to this project will be displayed. Currently we have funds to cover a portion of the area that should be covered. For example to cover the cafeteria would cost almost $3,000, the hallway from Room 101 down to the computer lab would be $2,500, past the locker rooms would be about $1,500. If you would like to ―help give MLHS a floor‖ you are in-vited to ―Pick up the P.A.C.E.‖ Hurry, the floors will be installed in July. Gifts must be received before July 1st. Gifts in the amounts listed below will be recognized as:

“Centurion” Level=$100 to $499

“Knights” Level=$500 to $999

“Silver” Level = $1,000 to $4,999

“Champions” Level=$5,000 or more

In the late 1990‘s the MLHS PTL put up a permanent billboard on the north edge of Fairmont. When it came time to replace it we were unable to use that same location. Donations were given to put up a new billboard, but after much searching and many requests, a new permanent location could not be found. Given the situation, an alternative solution was found to use these funds designated for a billboard. In March a rental bill-board on the west side of North State Street came became avail-
