THE GREAT COMMISSION - LESSON 1

Now the eleven disciples went toGalilee, to the mountain to which

Jesus had directed them.And when they saw him they

worshiped him, but some doubted.And Jesus came and said to them,

“All authority in heaven and onearth has been given to me. Go

therefore and make disciples ofall nations, baptizing them in

the name of the Father and of theSon and of the Holy Spirit,

teaching them to observe all thatI have commanded you.

And behold, I am with you always,to the end of the age.”

SCRIPTURES

(MATTHEW 28:16-20, ESV)

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to thewhole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoeverdoes not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those whobelieve: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;

they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadlypoison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they

will recover.”

So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heavenand sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and preached

everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message byaccompanying signs.

On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesuswas there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the

wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him,“They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do

with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whateverhe tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites ofpurification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants,“Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And he said tothem, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they tookit. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did notknow where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), themaster of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves thegood wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But youhave kept the good wine until now.” This, the first of his signs, Jesus did atCana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his

disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.

STORY RECAPWhen Jesus was about 30 years old, He and His disciples were invited to awedding in Cana. It must have been a massive wedding party, because prettysoon, the wine ran out! Jesus’ mother came to Him and said, “ They have no

wine.” Then she told the servants to do whatever Jesus said! Jesus spotted sixbig stone water jars and said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.”

Then Jesus told them to take some of the water out of the jar and take it tothe master of the feast. The servants did as they were told. As he tasted it,he was surprised and said to the bridegroom, “Everyone serves the good wine

first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have keptthe good wine until now. The master of the feast did not know where the winehad come from, and the servants did not tell him. But the disciples saw the

miracle that Jesus performed and they believed in Him!

HOW THIS APPLIESThis was the very first miracle that Jesus ever did during His time on earth.

It was the first time that the disciples got to see that He had so muchauthority on earth – even the water did what Jesus wanted and turned into wine!

When we get to know God for who He is and start to see and understand thatJesus has authority in heaven and on earth, our faith grows and we believe Himmore! When Jesus comes into our lives, things start to change because we seethat God is good and that He loves and cares for us. Also, the more we get toknow Jesus, the easier it is to trust Him and obey Him because we can see His

work in our lives.

After Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead, He had truly conqueredeverything! Not even sin and death could hold Him back - He now has authorityover sin and death! Jesus has authority over all things and when we go on a

mission with Jesus, we get to partner with Him!
