The Business LoungeClaro’s progress in the Jamaican Market

An elaborate launch at a prestigious hotel and the subsequent onslaught of colorful and vibes-filled commercials were the mark-ers of Claro’s introduction to the Jamaican public.

Since that time, the company has worked assiduously, through various marketing campaigns, to make its name a formidable force within the telecommunications industry.

In this week’s Business Lounge, Jamaicans Assess the Effective-ness of Claro’s Marketing Strategies. Here are the views:

Kareema Douglas, 26; Student, UTECH

“They (Claro) have made good on a number of their promises since their introduction to the market and I think they are making progress. Considering that they are up against major networks such as Digicel and LIME, I really think they are sticking to their guns in an effort to make a real impact,” says Douglas.

Douglas cites a wide range of “attractive and affordably priced handsets,” as one of the phone network’s major advantages.

In addition, the student who is the owner of 3G iPhone is im-pressed with the call rates set by the network. “As they (Claro) said, less dollars per minute and more talk with no limit.”

“ I’d rate them as a 7 out of 10, they are on the right path,” she adds.

Charles Hutchinson, 55

Hutchinson, a labourer and a client of Claro describes the market-ing strategies utilized by the company thus far as “excellent.”

“They knew that they had to come big and trust me, they have. When I’m driving, in most parts of the city, I’m guaranteed to see Claro balls atop the street signs…they (Claro) are keeping in the faces of Jamaicans and we are responding. Because of that, I went out and got connected with them,” he says.

Hutchinson now owns a 3G Motorola U9.

“Another thing that I really like about Claro’s mar-keting is the establishment of new dealers. They too, seem to be appearing everywhere. For, example, I see that one was set up recently in the Cross Roads area. What’s so special about this one is that it’s just couple steps away from a competitor’s outlet and from my observation the Claro outlet is the one drawing more customers,” he adds. “It’s this ag-gressive and extremely bold nature of marketing that’s going to help them sell phones.”

Ralph Nunes, 29, Customer Service AgentAlso commenting on the effectiveness of the mar-keting tactics employed by Claro Jamaica Limited, Nunes had this to say: “They are definitely going neck to neck with the big guys.”

Nunes makes reference to the network’s latest pro-motion, Christmas Bubbles of Joy, which entails the giving away of numerous prizes including nine C-class Mercedes Benz. “That promotion is set to be a grand customer base booster. Everyone wants a chance at getting one those prices and I know persons are running to get signed up with Claro just because of that.”

Although, signed to a different network, Nunes ad-mits that the urge to switch is at times overwhelm-ing. “ I never believed that Claro would pose much threat to the others, but I see that they are serious about competing. And for this year, I’m sure they have a lot in store for the market, I’m just waiting to see.”

If you’re tuned in the local and international news you will have heard the pronouncements that 2009 will be a tough one for businesses. On the contrary, I’m officially declaring that this year will be a prosperous one for all those who choose to believe and affirm a positive outcome. In fact, my mantra for this year is “Prosperity is mine in 2009!”

Dictionary.com describes prosperity as: ‘the state of being successful or wealthy; advance or gain in anything good or desirable; successful progress in any business or enterprise.’ Prosperity is not just about how much money you have in the bank, it’s really a way of being and thinking. Achieving prosperity is the compilation of several little successes that take us to what we ultimately desire.

So, what can we do to create the prosperity that we wish for?

Brian Tracy, one of the world’s leading authorities on personal achievement, declares that it is possible to initiate prosperity in your life, if you are willing to learn and practice certain principles of success. Here are two key universal laws that can help you to become more prosperity-conscious:

The Law of Abundance

Achieving prosperity starts with believing that there is enough money in the world for everyone who knows how to get it and keep it. Tracy reveals that “we live in a generous universe and we are surrounded by blessings and opportunities to acquire all we truly desire.” It has been scientifically proven that there is no lack in the universe.

If you subscribe to scarcity thinking, you will actually prevent prosperity from entering your life. Tracy points out that the law of abundance also states that “people are poor because they have not yet decided to become rich.” If you really believe that you can tap into the universal abundance, then you will start taking the necessary actions to turn your belief into reality.

The Law of Attraction

You can attract prosperity into your life by continually making it the focus of your thoughts. The law of attraction states “that your thoughts create a force field of energy that radiates out

from you, and attracts back into your life people and circumstances in harmony with them.” In other words, what you think is what you get. So if you think 2009 is going to be challenging, then you’ll only manifest problems for yourself.

Tracy declares that “if you have a very clear idea in your mind of your desired goal, and you can hold that idea in your mind on a continuing basis, you will inevitably draw into your life the resources that you need in order to achieve it.” Therefore, you must focus only on what you want - increased business, sustained wealth, happiness and prosperity.

These two laws will help you set the stage for prosperity to manifest in your life. However, it will not appear like magic, as Tracy indicates that success requires consistent personal effort. You therefore have to be determined in setting goals, and disciplined in carrying out the hard work required to achieve them.

Here’s my tip to create prosperity: get up every morning and repeat, “Prosperity is mine in 2009.” Over time, you will start to see the positive results from your affirmations.

6 YOUR MONEY - Street Smart

Being smart doesn’t only apply to the office. If you want to survive in this society you have to be street smart. For this week’s issue, Street Smart interviewed two young businesswomen, Cindy and Christine. These two definitely displayed the “go get it” attitude needed in business.

Question: What does it takes for a street vendor to be efficient in the market?

Christine: “You have to be very nice and learn how to approach your customers. Don’t leave out the children because them give you a sale also, with those in mind everything would be ok.”

Question: Cindy, when and how did you get started in the business?

Cindy: “I started last year, I was home everyday doing nothing really. Then I phoned my mother and asked her for some funds to sell goods because I know that the selling thing works fast.”

Question: Christine, what are some of the benefits you have gotten from your job?

Christine: “Well it helps me out a lot. My children benefits from my selling and if the man don’t have any money, I can use the profit from my stall to do whatever I want.”

Question: Cindy, do you find pleasure in what you do?

Cindy: “Yea… you know how much comfortable I am since I start selling goods. At least me don’t have to depend on others now.”

Question: On a regular day, how many phone cards do you sell?

Christine: “Well this one sell often than anything else on my stall… sometimes I sell about 8-10 cards per day. But you have time when things go slow yes, like yesterday (Sunday), this morning not so bad still.”

Christine checks the igloo, which contains a number of beverages that most Jamaicans favored.

Cindy in all smiles as she stack out toilet tissues on her stall.

What does it really mean to be smart?

Yea… you know how much comfortable I am since I start selling goods. At least me don’t have to depend on others now

Question: How do you manage, seeing that most people around you are selling the same items?

Cindy: “I manage good because I have my own customers (laughs). Them loyal you see.”

Question: Were you impressed by any of the business-related moves made by the government last year?

Christine: “I don’t know, I don’t see anything where I really benefited from. I am not saying he hasn’t done anything, but we as vendors should benefit more, remember a them say them a the poor people governor.”
