It was at these, now famous, Liverpool addresses where John and Paul started planningtheir path to superstardom.John lived at Mendips with his Aunt Mimi from the age of five to 22
(1945-1963), and during this time developed a passion for playing the guitar.From the entrance, where the porch was enclosed by John’s aunt so that she
wouldn’t be disturbed by music, there are hints to how the iconic band practiced
the Beatles’ childhood homes
and began to create their extensiveback catalogue.Meanwhile the Forthlin Road
property, which was home to Paulfrom the age of 13 to 22, has beendescribed by English Heritage as a “place of intense creativity andmusical production” as up to 100Beatles songs were composed there. It’s no wonder then, that in
February 2012 both houses wereGrade II listed in recognition of their historic associations and, under the management of the National Trust(www.nationaltrust.org.uk), arepreserved and regularly visited for tours by Beatles fans.The childhood homes of

trail, was occupied by thecouple for 40 years andcombined their livingquarters with their businessspace and photographicstudio. It’s also said by theNational Trust to be the onlyknown example of a 20thcentury photographic studiointact.Edward, who aside from
his main portrait businessalso enjoyed landscapephotography, produced one of his most famousphotographs, The Birth of the Ark Royal, in thedarkroom of the house. The property is also a
hive of original photographsby Edward, with hints of hislinks to other well-knownLiverpool destinations suchas the Playhouse theatre.
A Blue Plaque, the first to be awarded toa building outside of London no less, sitsfirmly above the door of ‘The Hollies’ inMaghull. It’s hailed as a home of historicsignificance thanks to its former residentFrank Hornby, the founder and creator ofthe much-loved Meccano, Hornby ModelRailways and Dinky Toys.The inventor, businessman and
politician, who was born in Liverpool,made The Hollies on Station Road hisfirst Maghull home, before later moving toa larger house nearby known as ‘QuarryBrook’ which was his last residence before
he died in 1936.The Hollies remains a private
residential property, but forms part of thehistory of Maghull’s most famous resident,who achieved global success as MeccanoLtd became the biggest toy manufacturerin Britain during the 1920s and 1930s and branched out with bases aroundEurope, the USA and Argentina.Frank’s life in Maghull and beyond was
particularly put under the spotlight earlierthis year, as the 150th anniversary of hisbirth was celebrated.

During the Eighties and Nineties, Brookside Closewas one of the most famous cul-de-sacs in thecountry, let alone Liverpool, as it was home to theground-breaking Channel 4 soap opera Brookside.The show by Phil Redmond, which first

appeared on television in 1982, attracted millionsof viewers during its peak as it gripped audienceswith storylines such as a resident being buriedunder the patio and the first pre-watershed lesbiankiss. It also propelled some of its stars to furthersuccess beyond the close, with the likes of JenniferEllison, Sue Johnstone, Ricky Tomlinson, andAnna Friel still enjoying careers on stage andtelevision long after the programme was cancelledback in 2003.The street at the centre of all the drama, which
is actually located in West Derby, has since beengiven a new lease of life after its 13 vacantproperties were sold to an anonymous purchaser at auction in 2008.They were revamped and unveiled a few years
later as homes that were ready for new residents to set up home on Brookside Close off-screen.

Buying your first HMO shouldnot be taken likely. There is lots
to consider including planning, licensing,and other regulation and legislation.Councils throughout the country aredifferent and interpret centralgovernment’s guidance differently so Iwould consult your local council andestablish what their qualifying criteria for aHMO and a licensable HMO is. Generallythough, if the property has five or moretenants who are unrelated forming two ormore households, and is over three or morefloors then you will need to apply for aHMO license from the council which cancost circa £500 for three years. However, if your property is accredited
with the local council’s accreditationscheme you may qualify for a discount. Ifyour property has less than five tenants andis on two floors it can still be classed as aHMO but will not need a license. Somelarger properties (more than six bedrooms)will need to apply for planning permissionto operate as a HMO and this will be inaddition to HMO licensing if applicable.

The notice covers anyoutstanding viewings or details sent sothe agent can be sure to follow up onany potential leads. However, dependingon circumstances some agents may justrelease a client. Most agents operate on a sole agency
basis, therefore if you instruct anotherestate agent without notifying yourcurrent agent then you will more thanlikely be liable to pay two fees. Somewill also have a small withdrawal chargeif a client withdraws in the initialperiod, which is usually protectionagainst time wasters.

properties Generate more than £4.5m at auCtionThe latest Sutton Kersh auction has beenhailed a success after generating more than £4.5 million. Potential buyers flocked to Liverpool’s Marriott Hotel, where 72(71%) of the 102 properties going under the hammer were sold.
Several lots exceeded expectations including a double fronted detached Swiss Roadproperty, divided into two semi-detachedhouses, which had a guide price of £70,000 but sold for £102,000. Prescot’s formerCitizen’s Advice Bureau also beat its £80,000guide price, selling for £132,500. Other highlights included an apartment
within a Grade II listed building in FalknerSquare, which had a guide price of £130,000and sold for £160,000.
Cathy Holt, auction manageress at SuttonKersh, says: “This was another excellentperformance which builds on the success ofprevious auctions. There is also plenty of postsale activity so the final figure is likely to beeven better. “We saw a large cross section of buyers,
including investors and owner occupiers.There were also a number of new faces, andpeople from out of the area, who clearly seeLiverpool as an attractive place to invest.”

help to Buy first phaseUnder the first part of the Help to Buyscheme the government provides a loancovering 20% of the deposit on homes under£600,000. This allows buyers who are lookingat a 75% mortgage to pay just 5% deposit ona new build home.
Over 12,500 buyers have now beenconvinced by the initiative, according togovernment figures. One developer that hasbeen encouraging new buyers to enter themarket through Help to Buy is HelenaPartnerships. Helen Reddington, newinitiatives manager at Helena Partnerships,says: “Whether you are a first time buyer orlooking for your next home, Help to Buymakes home ownership more affordable bygetting you moving with only a 5% depositand a 75% mortgage, allowing purchasers tobenefit from some of the best mortgage dealsavailable.”
The government loan is interest-free forfive years but from year six will rise by RPIinflation plus 1%. Typically the loan can berepaid at any point during the following 25years or upon the sale of the property underthe first stage of the Help to Buy scheme.

Named theMortgage Guarantee scheme, it means thegovernment will encourage mortgage lendingby underwriting some of the mortgage offeredby banks. The inclusion of second hand properties upto the value of £600,000 means buyers of newbuild homes will not be the only people whowill benefit from the ambitious Help to Buyscheme and developers are convinced thescheme will help ensure there is more choiceand more affordable options for home buyers.

dan croll is back again with the release of new single ‘in/out’. We talked to him about hismusical influences, getting played on radio one, and jamming with sir paul mccartney.
Your new single, In/Out, launched thismonth. Are you pleased with the reaction?My hopes have already been met with the newsingle. I wanted a gradual improvement over thelast singles and I wanted more people enjoyingit and that seems to be happening with YouTubeand SoundCloud plays since we released itonline. The song started with Dustin Wong,who is an incredible solo artist. He createsguitar orchestral pieces and he let me have asample of his songs to use for the new single. Ipicked my favourite and rearranged it with myown style, which is J-Pop, tropical and quitefast-paced.It’s a nightmare for a guitarist to play!You’ve really embraced the digital side ofthings haven’t you?It is not the traditional route but as a solo artistyou have to adapt quickly. The music industry isever-changing and I wasn’t a fan of digital atfirst but I slowly started to see the benefits andI’ve warmed to it now. The main positive isexposure. You can send your music and videoout to as many people as possible and that sideof things has been helpful to me. The downsideis I don’t make money off it. A lot of peoplestream music on Spotify but I was paid £2.14 for four or five months of streaming – that’s not
even enough to pay for a Spotify subscription!What was it like to see your single,Compliment Your Soul, do so well?It was incredible. None of us had planned it to beas successful as it was when I was writing it butI knew it was good. It was slightly poppy but hada different feel to it as well. I was hoping it wouldbe played on Radio One and it was. It was alsoplayed on 6 Music and not only helped to launchme but also Joe Wills as a talented producer. Wetoured America in March and it was fantastic.There were some really good satellite radiostations that were really supportive and we got anincredible reaction. Tickets are selling well againso it’s been a great experience.How would you describe your music?I suppose it could be described as a mix-tapewith a lot of influences that are completelydifferent to my music. I listened to all sorts ofmusic like metal and punk and it all goes intothe mixing pot when I am writing a song. Themusic depends on what I am listening to at thetime and the people around me when I write it.I’m incredibly happy with Radio One (playingthe song) because as a station it’s very closeto my heart. I didn’t expect to hear myself onthere so it was a bizarre. But the amount ofTweets and people on Facebook telling me theywere listening to it in their car was great. How has your experience at LIPA (LiverpoolInstitute for Performing Arts) helped you?LIPA has helped me in a way because it gave methe tools to set up on my own. Upon leavingLIPA I was very much on my own but I had thelessons in music law and marketing. I am now
strong on my own and can stand on my own twofeet as a recording artist. The most importantthing about LIPA was the people who werethere. There were 28 of us collaborating witheach other and we’re all doing really well. It isnice to think we all influenced each other duringour time there.Did you meet Sir Paul McCartney?I met Sir Paul McCartney for around 45 minutesand I played him a couple of my songs – Homeand Marion. He loved them and we jammed for awhile. It was bizarre, a pinch yourself moment. Ihad a lot of jealous family and friends after that!Why did you choose to hold a song launchparty in Liverpool?I still live in Liverpool and it is very much myhome. It is where my friends are and it is a greatplace to be. It is not claustrophobic like Londonand there is a strong network here. It is a goodplace to release my single – it really is abeautiful city. I spend most of my weekends atCamp and Furnace and I’m just about to headto the bakery next door. It’s (the Baltic Triangle)a developing area and one where there is a lotgoing on at the moment.What’s next?An album is on the cards and I’m just gettingthe mixes back now. Hopefully it will be readyat the start of the new year. I’m hoping to releaseone more single before Christmas and I’ll betouring. I want to release the album and I wantit to be well received but I’m very content at themoment. Things are exactly how I would wantthem to be and I’m particularly looking forwardto travelling to the US again.

A celebration of all things vintagewill take place in the city, as theSouth Liverpool Vintage Fairmarks its first year of success.
Organiser Laura Kelly launchedthe regular event at All HallowsParish Church Hall in MossleyHill last September, having beeninspired by her antique dealingmother Sandy.
Arranging five fairs throughoutthe year whilst juggling her day today work, Laura says the currentcraze of vintage wares has helpedher event grow.
“Vintage is so popular now andit’s just gone crazy,” she says. “Theevent has gone from strength tostrength and I’m fully booked forthe next one.”
Since the South LiverpoolVintage Fair began, the numberof stalls is now reaching themaximum 30 and around 300to 400 people are said to walkthrough the door throughout eachtime, travelling from as far asBirmingham and Manchester.
The next fair, being held from10am-4.30pm on 21 September,will feature a performance by thesoul band Groove Lab to mark the special occasion, as well as the usual range of vintage fashion,accessories, homeware, collectablesand refreshments.

I would like to say that Ientered Free State Kitchen(FSK) with an unbiasedview of the place, however,this has been trickier thanyou’d imagine. For monthsnow, friends have beenraving to me about FSK andI have often found myselfprocrastinating at my deskreading one of their manymouth-watering reviews.
Free State Kitchen ishidden just off Hope Streeton Maryland Street(Maryland being known asthe Free State, hence thename). From outside itlooks rather unassuming,however, on entering therestaurant it is wonderfullylight with large windowsthat look out onto theirimpressive beer garden. Thegarden is also the venue fortheir soon-to-be legendarypie eating competitions.
The restaurant has a freshand simple décor, whichgives it a subtle and stylish,authentic American feel. Mydinner date and I wereseated at a great table nextto one of the large windows;this allowed us to admirethe fantastic outdoor gardenarea and the rustic vegetable
patch that’s situated withinit. FSK has a friendly andcasual ambience, as itattracts a wide variety ofdiners and children are verywelcome. The customerservice at FSK is excellent.The waiter advised mydinner date on the cocktails,which are a very reasonable£5, and myself on theunfamiliar American beers.
It was then time to order.The menu is made up ofclassic American dishes withan interesting,contemporary twist,however, FSK make surethat they source theirproduce a lot closer to homeand use local suppliers inthe Merseyside area toproduce the dishes.
The menu has vegetarianoptions and the restaurantpromises to cater for alldiners’ needs. My diningpartner and I shared twostarters. The Buffalo HotWings, marinated in a spicybuttermilk marinade andserved with a blue cheesedip (£4.50) were very tastyand the blue cheese wasgreat for cooling the spicedown. We then had theMaryland Crab Cakes
(£4.50), which were lightand fresh and allowed lotsof room for our mains.
For the main courseI opted for The Scooch(£8.50), ‘Baltimore’s No.1sammy’, which is sandwichto you and me. The Scoochconsists of tasty Italian delimeats, Prima DonnaCheese, hot sweet peppers,roasted red pepper, olive oiland balsamic on a griddleciabatta roll. The sandwichwas delicious and thefillings really complementedeach other. All meals areserved with fries and agenerous sized jar of pickles.My dinner date decided togo for FSK’s AmericanCheeseburger (£7). Theburger was cooked toperfection and the tendermeat seemed to melt in themouth. We managed toleave some room to sharea Peanut Butter Sundae(£5.50), which concludeda fantastic meal and a greatevening.
Whether you’re after arelaxed atmosphere to enjoygreat food with friends orlooking to enter a pie eatingcompetition, Free StateKitchen is the place to go.
Breakfast, known as the most important mealof the day, can be controversial. Some swearby it as the best way to start the day, whileothers grab a coffee and a quick bite on theway to work in place of the traditional morningmeal. Whichever camp you lie in, there's nodenying these three top picks will pique yourearly appetite.

Onion Deli is perfect for an outer-citybreakfast. Independent and fiercely dedicatedto homemade and organic produce, it’s one ofthe quirkier cafes. It epitomises shabby chicwith its wonderfully mismatched furniture andvintage fixtures, but you'll find the warmestwelcome and the best eggs in the vicinity, allwashed down with a fantastic cup of tea.

a feast of treats.Around 40,000 foodies of all ages headed to the two-
day event, where bars, restaurants, venues and cafesfrom across the city showcased their culinary offerings.
There were also guest appearances and cookerydemonstrations from the likes of Reggae Reggae Saucecreator Levi Roots, and TV chefs Gizzi Erskine andShelina Permaloos.
Meanwhile live music performances, the HeavenlyChocolate Garden, and a show by Stefan Gates
teaching the public more about eating insects,while also serving samples such assmokey bacon mealworms, were popularattractions at this year’s festival.
