Beau Gamby, Trainee QS

What training have you completed with Galldris?

I joined Galldris as a Trainee QS, after a career change. As part of my training programme, I attend day release classes each week at the Anglia Ruskin University, and the other days I am based on site working on one of Galldris’s largest projects. This combination gives me the opportunity to apply the theory I acquire from University to my work on site.

What are the benefi ts?

I would highly recommend this route of studying because you gain fi rst-hand knowledge of how the industry works and you earn whilst you are studying. There is always someone on hand to support and show me how things are done. I have been allocated a mentor who is there to answer questions about techniques, terminology or anything related to the industry. The whole experience is rewarding for my long-term career and my future within the construction trade.

SUMMER OR YEAR OUT PLACEMENT/ ENGINEER

Ben Thompson, Trainee Civil Engineer (Undergraduate)

What are you currently studying?

I am currently studying Civil Engineering at the University of Exeter, and have just switched my course from the BEng to the MEng. My decision to change to the MEng was aided by members of the Galldris team, who were helpful and keen to talk about my future career.

What have you achieved since being at Galldris?

For the summer at Galldris I was exposed to a wide variety of tasks, not only those of an engineer but also those of a site manager. In the fi rst couple of weeks I was given time to understand the project, observe how the site functioned and the jobs that the site engineer and the site manager had to undertake day-to-day. During this time, I learnt how to use crucial tools for a site engineer such as an EDM and the uses these tools have on a construction site.

What are the benefi ts?

Increasingly employers are looking for people with practical experience as well as academic achievements. My time on site gave me a link between the theoretical knowledge I had learnt at university and the real world workings of construction and engineering. I was able to take my knowledge of geotechnics and structural analysis and see how it is applied in a real world scenario. The site experience has also given me an understanding into the reality of engineering with a realistic approach to a project, and has made me aware of designing with practicality in mind.

Heenaba Mahida, Graduate Assistant Surveyor

What responsibilities do you have within Galldris?

I am currently working between Galldris’s Pre-Construction and Surveying Departments. This has given me the chance to prepare tenders and contract documents, which has enabled me to develop a good knowledge of the pre-construction stage of the process. I also support the commercial side of the business preparing cost value reconciliations and I assist with pricing and agreeing project variations. I also accompany some of the more senior surveyors on site visits.

What skills do you think are essential for your role?

The skills that I believe are essential to my role are the ability to work under pressure and prioritise, due to strict deadlines in submitting tenders. You need to have a logical and innovative approach to problem solving, coupled with strong numeracy and fi nancial management skills. Being a good team player is also important.

Edward Smith, Trainee Civil Engineer (Undergraduate)

What are you currently studying?

I am currently studying Civil Engineering at Chelmsford College on a 2 year part

time level 3. Once I have completed this I would like to complete the HNCE.

What have you achieved since being at Galldris?

I started off as a labourer for the fi rst 2 months before I was then given an opportunity to work with one of the engineers on site and assist him with setting out and other tasks. Since this has happened I have become more confi dent in myself and I am not afraid to ask questions about things that I don’t understand. I am now not afraid to take on any task that is put in front of me.In the fi rst couple of weeks I was given time to understand the project, observe how the site functioned and the jobs that the site engineer and the site manager had to undertake day-to-day. During this time, I studied how to use crucial tools for a site engineer such as an EDM and the uses these tools have on a construction site.

What are the benefi ts?

Studying part time alongside working full time is giving me vital knowledge that you can learn on site and translate that into my assignments. It also allows me to use what I have gained inside the classroom into practice whilst I am working. Having a qualifi cation is vital for moving up the ladder but also gaining vital experience that I will be able to use in the future. I was able to take my knowledge of geotechnics and structural analysis and see how it is applied in a real world scenario.

APPRENTICESHIPS & TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES IN SUPPORT ROLES

We work in collaboration with local colleges to off er Apprenticeships in all the support roles we have within our construction offi ce environment.

If you are interested in working in our head offi ce, we can off er apprenticeships in IT, Business Administration, HR and Accounting.

The following is an account from Mahdi, one of our IT Apprentices, who joined us in 2014 and who is now working towards a degree.

Mahdi Hussain Chowdhury, IT Engineer

What qualifi cations are you aiming to achieve with Galldris?

I joined Galldris two years ago, as a Level 3 IT Apprentice. I now have progressed to a Level 4 Apprenticeship, and when I have completed this stage of my studies I will have a foundation degree in IT. My aim is to complete a BSc in IT, all of which is achievable via the Apprentice route I am currently on at Galldris.

What are the benefi ts of taking up an apprenticeship?

I work in a very busy IT department that serves both head offi ce and all our construction sites. The experience I have gained and the key skills learnt, have given me a head start in the fi eld of IT. My mentor has been so supportive, he has always treated me as a valued member of the team and I have never felt like I am just a trainee. I have been assigned challenging duties and allowed to progress within my current role. I was promoted to IT Assistant following my BTEC level 3 qualifi cation.I thoroughly enjoy my role with Galldris, and I would recommend starting your career with an apprenticeship, as you earn while you learn and you are trained in the skills an employer wants.
