Hello friends,

Wisconsin Public Television is your place to grow through learning.

This is so much more than just something we say to describe what we do. It is the core of the full array of essential entertaining and enriching educational programs, community engagement activities and events that we work to provide for the state of Wisconsin every day.

We are so proud that parents trust public television as a safe and nurturing place for their children to explore the world around them through long-beloved shows like Sesame Street and vibrant new favorites like Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Peg + Cat. But, that is just the stepping-off point of the growth through learning that WPT fosters across each of our lives — sparking our curiosity, dazzling our senses and bringing us closer to our neighbors as we explore the passions, issues and stories that tie us together.

In this annual report we will highlight just a few of the ways that WPT engaged you across the past year as we reached into communities across the state to tell the stories that matter to all of us, shined a light on the state’s young artists who inspire us each day and preserved the history of our people as we look toward the future. It is essential work that wouldn’t be possible without your generous support. As we continue to fulfill our mission to enrich, engage and inform the people of Wisconsin, we are always mindful of the responsibility that support brings. Thank you for helping us build your place to grow through learning into a welcoming place for each and every family in our state.

Graciously,

James Steinbach Director of Television Wisconsin Public Television

Favorite characters like Big Bird, Thomas the Tank Engine, Daniel Tiger and Arthur are often some of the first faces that our state’s children see on television. The important lessons these friends impart on a daily basis — from fostering a love of reading to the principles of cooperation, manners and simple life skills — help to provide a healthy on-ramp to a lifetime of learning. WPT’s long legacy of broadcasting the highest quality in children’s programs is more than just our biggest point of pride; it is an essential part of our children’s early development.

In September, as part of the Wisconsin Science Festival, WPT convened a panel of experts from Sesame Workshop, NOVA and child-development researchers and scientists from the University of Wisconsin to discuss the importance of teaching the principles of science and math to preschoolers. The result was a wide-ranging conversation about the important role parents, educators and public broadcasters can play in preparing our youngest friends for lives as engaged explorers of the world around them.

Child development — both on and off the television screen — is a responsibility WPT takes seriously. In the past year, we continued our long-running, in-person workshops for child development professionals and educators in communities across the state.

As our state’s children grow their minds and imaginations with the academic and social lessons learned from their favorite shows, they are also learning important lessons about healthy eating habits and the joy of being active. Those lessons bounded from the screen and into real-life interactions with PBS Kids personalities Mr. Steve and Miss Rosa at WPT’s annual Get Up and Go! events across the state. This year, families attending the events and watching at home received a special greeting from First Lady Michelle Obama, who applauded the statewide effort to improve all of our healthy habits.

Our Children’s Place

“WPT programs are

the only programs

that I have my

children watch. The

educational nature

of the children’s

programming is far

superior to any other

option on TV.”

As the state’s largest stage — with enough front row seats for everyone — Wisconsin Public Television shined a bright spotlight on Wisconsin’s talented young performers. This celebration of music, dance, drama and more, from venues across Wisconsin, reinforced the essential benefits of arts education for students while fostering an appreciation for a wide array of arts and culture experiences for viewers of all ages.

This year, WPT continued the annual tradition of Wisconsin Young Artists Compete: The Final Forte in partnership with Wisconsin Public Radio and the Madison Symphony Orchestra. Our Young Performers Initiative featured even more of Wisconsin’s finest young performers in a robust broadcast of the Wisconsin School Music Association’s State Honors Concerts. New this year, The Tommy Awards brought the best of Broadway to the airwaves through the creativity of the top high school theater performances from across Wisconsin. And, the Green Bay Holiday Pops! concert captured a community-wide tradition of singers and performers of all ages.

Alongside the arts, civic engagement is a key to the vitality of every community in Wisconsin, and WPT continued to provide coverage of the important news stories that affect every corner of the state each week on Here and Now — asking the important questions of elected officials and creating a civil discourse around the issues that are important to every generation. In partnership with WPR, WPT also brought every Wisconsin resident into the capitol for the annual State of the State and State of the Tribes addresses, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration and the biennial state budget address.

We all know that our growth through learning is a lifetime venture that doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Each evening on The Wisconsin Channel — and all of the time online — WPT featured some of the brightest minds in the world as we learned about their passions and explored new topics in the state’s largest virtual lecture hall on University Place.

“I love watching

young people engage

in music in whatever

form. Their clear

eyes, bright smiles

and look of pride in

themselves during

the Tommy Awards

program says it all.

Just keep on doing

what you’re doing!”

The best history lessons capture a student’s attention with familiar, relatable characters that deepen the understanding and appreciation of the past. Wisconsin Public Television does that every day in classrooms and living rooms across the state.

This year, the celebrated Jerry Apps: A Farm Story became more than a simple reflection of rural life in Wisconsin. Picked up for national distribution by PBS, the program’s recollection of the hardships and subsequent familial warmth proved to be a universal experience as memories poured in from viewers across the country.

In December, a follow-up program, A Farm Winter With Jerry Apps, found the celebrated author and historian sharing his experiences from the quiet season on his family farm in Wild Rose. Audiences again reveled in the state’s rich agricultural history and the close ties we all share.

As we continued to grow through learning, two new programs showed us some of the people behind this growth. In the fall, the brand new program, Around the Farm Table, invited us to explore life on a modern farm and introduced some of the people who are working the land in Wisconsin today to provide sustainable food for every generation. The new QUEST project – a national multi-station science journalism program - also turned its sights locally to agriculture, profiling an innovative urban farming project in Milwaukee, among other Wisconsin stories.

And, the year ended with WPT looking forward to an exciting new project that will help us all connect with the most interesting people and places in our state. Production on Wisconsin Life, our newest series in partnership with WPR, promises to connect us all as we learn about our shared pursuits and begin to understand our diverse cultures and heritage.

As we look toward 2014, Wisconsin Public Television will continue to be the place for everyone in Wisconsin to grow through learning. And we can’t wait to continue to learn more about you.

“I grew up on a farm,

so I identify well with

the stories Jerry

Apps tells. He is such

a good storyteller.

Thank you for

having him on.”

HONORING HISTORY

For Director’s Circle member Phil Hendrickson, supporting Wisconsin Public Television is about sharing Wisconsin history and bringing meaningful stories to life. Born in the house where his mother was also born, in a town named after his great-grandfather, Camp Douglas, Hendrickson’s life began with an appreciation for history, family and community. He fondly remembers playing in the bluffs of Juneau County and working in his grandfather’s store. From these early roots, Hendrickson went on to graduate from The University of Wisconsin and Harvard Business School, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and become a successful businessman, entrepreneur and philanthropist.

Hendrickson’s leadership support has been instrumental in creating WPT local history productions, including Wisconsin World War II Stories and Wisconsin Hometown Stories: Green Bay. Most recently, Hendrickson made a lead gift in support of WPT’s Wisconsin Hometown Stories: Juneau County — a gift aimed at helping WPT tell the story of a place that has meant so much to his family and countless generations of Wisconsinites. With his support we’re able to share, honor and sustain the stories that have shaped Wisconsin history for generations.

Thank You, Betsy Hendrickson

WPT also acknowledges the longtime support of the late Betsy Hendrickson (1923 — 2013). Her enthusiasm and dedication to education has inspired Wisconsin Public Television for more than 25 years.

A. PAUL JONES’ LEGACY SUPPORTS YOUNG PERFORMERS

A. Paul Jones lived a life of service and generosity. Born in Mineral Point, Paul served in the U.S Navy during World War II, held degrees from Carroll College and Harvard Business School and spent his career at The First Wisconsin National Bank of Milwaukee. Paul’s successful career was just a piece of his service-oriented life, which was marked by a deep commitment to giving back. He was active in supporting both Harvard and Carroll, including serving as acting president of the latter during a turbulent time. Paul was also a champion of the arts, serving as Director of the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, Director of the United Performing Arts Fund, Director and Trustee of Milwaukee Skylight Theatre and Advisor to the Milwaukee Ballet Company.

Jones ensured that his work and philanthropy would have lasting impact beyond his lifetime by establishing the A. Paul Jones Charitable Trust. Marlee Jones carries on her late husband’s legacy by serving as trustee. The A. Paul Jones Charitable Trust has made principal gifts of more than $120,000 in the past six years to support WPT’s Young Performers Initiative, ensuring that young people and their teachers are celebrated statewide for their achievements in the arts through local broadcast programs that include Wisconsin Young Artists Compete: The Final Forte, Wisconsin State Honors Concerts and The Tommy Awards.

Wisconsin Public Television staff and viewers were saddened by the January 2014 death of Shelley Ryan, longtime host and producer of The Wisconsin Gardener.

During her 21 years hosting the beloved gardening how-to show, Ryan inspired thousands of gardeners across the state to express their creativity in their own homes, gardens, lawns and landscapes.
