WE’RE RIDING FOR KIDS LIKE ROUX

MEET ROUX, ONE BRAVE LITTLE GIRL3-year-old Roux was diagnosed with stage 4 hepatoblastoma (liver cancer) in January 2019.After 10 cycles of chemotherapy and a short time in remission, Roux’s cancer returned and she’s now back in treatment to beat the disease.

Roux’s cancer journey started in late 2018, when she started to experience high fevers, nausea and vomiting. Her parents, Gillian and Adam, took her to numerous doctors and the common verdict was ‘a nasty virus’.

But in January last year, Roux was rushed to hospital after another high fever and having trouble walking. This emergency room trip lead to a devastating diagnosis…

Roux had stage 4 hepatoblastoma with metastases in her lungs.

Three days later she began a 10-cycle chemotherapy treatment protocol, with surgery to resect her liver part-way through. Little Roux finished her 10th cycle of treatment on June 12, 2019 and life slowly started to return to normal.

However, a post-chemo scan in October 2019 revealed that Roux’s cancer had returned. Spots were found on her lungs, and this courageous little girl is now in treatment again.

At the end of February, Roux finished an intensive course of ICE chemotherapy – named for the specific combination of three drugs. She then had double lung surgery and is now

undergoing ‘clean up’ maintenance chemo which will go for another 6 months.

Cancer magnifies the little victories: a day without vomiting, a playful laugh after weeks of fatigue, a walk around the hospital ward hand-in-hand with mum or dad, a couple of hours playing with her beloved little brother Silvio. Nothing is taken for granted.

Through it all, Roux has been incredible. She’s cooperative, even with the most uncomfortable of pokes and pricks. She has a wisdom far beyond her 3 years.

And she recently told her mum that when she grows up, she wants to be a nurse.

The road ahead is uncertain, but as her mum Gillian told us, “our little girl is strong and has surprised us at so many turns so far”.

Roux is an inspiration to her family and everyone who knows her. And this August, she will inspire an entire country to ride in Great Cycle Challenge.

We’re riding for you this August! GO ROUX!

YOUR CHALLENGE. THEIR FIGHT. OUR IMPACT. Cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in Canada. Over 1,400 Canadian children are diagnosed with cancer every year.

6 GCC CHAMPIONS GUIDE

Great Cycle Challenge Canada has raised $12,412,026 for vital research to develop more effective treatments and find cures for childhood cancers.

Only a small portion of federal funding goes towards childhood cancer research, so your support is crucial to finding safer, more effective therapies for these brave kids.

Children’s cancers can’t be treated like adult cancers, as the types of cancer that occur for kids are different and typically more aggressive. Adult treatments are often far too toxic for little bodies.

We ride to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.

Great Cycle Challenge is a national initiative of SickKids Foundation, the largest charitable funder of child health research in Canada.

FUNDS RAISED THROUGH THE GREAT CYCLE CHALLENGE ARE:

A new clinical trial at SickKids has seen children with brain tumours surpassing their

survival expectancies by years. Successful clinical trials can change the trajectory of care for patients, but they demand

additional resources. GCC supported a Fellow in Radiology to provide highly detailed, continued assessment of patient scans.

The GCC funded a trial that combines two existing cancer drugs and administers them

at a slower, more consistent rate, making them more effective at destroying tumours

with less side effects than traditional chemotherapy. The trial is available for

children at cancer centres across Canada.

CAR-T-cell therapy is an immunotherapy where immune cells are removed and

engineered to seek and destroy leukemia cells. This is a far more targeted treatment than standard chemotherapy. GCC funds are helping engineer these cells in-house,

reducing the cost of such advanced therapies to patients.

In 2016, SickKids established the world-leading SickKids Cancer Sequencing

Program (KiCS), with GCC funds supporting its continuing operation.

It’s a national program designed to analyse the makeup of a child’s cancer and

implement personalized treatments.

CYCLING SAFETY & ROAD RULES

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP YOU HAVE A SAFE MONTH OF RIDING:

We want Great Cycle Challenge to be a fun, fit and enjoyable challenge for everyone, so it’s important for all participants to ride safely throughout the event and obey the rules when riding on the road.

• Cyclists must obey all road rules in their respective province at all times, including – but not limited to – stopping at traffic signals, stop signs and yielding at intersections when appropriate.

• Keep to the right and ride at least a metre clear of the curb and parked cars.

• Keep an eye out for car doors which might be opened in front of you.

• Wear bright clothing to ensure you’re visible to other road users.

• If riding at dawn/dusk or nighttime, ensure you use a white front light and red rear light placed in a visible location so other road users can see you.

• Never assume a driver has seen you and look closely for other vehicles at intersections.

• Avoid riding in an erratic manner – always follow a straight line.

• Use hand signals to show your intention to turn or change lanes.

• Ensure helmet laws in your province are always adhered to at a minimum, and we recommend all riders wear a helmet at all times.

• Do not – under any circumstance – hold on to another moving vehicle to be towed by it.

• Great Cycle Challenge is a personal challenge, not a race, so ensure you ride within your abilities – both physically and skill level

• Strictly follow the advice of provincial health authorities on group activity and appropriate social distancing measures.
