Dear Friends,

We are proud to present this year’s annual report as a celebration of the Pasadena Educational Foundation’s far reaching impact on our students, teachers and community.

The Foundation offers an array of dynamic and innovative programs that enhance the educational experiences of children and teachers throughout the Pasadena Unified School District, and provides fundraising and other assistance for many of the district’s key initiatives. The impact we are making in this community transcends the classroom.

The theme of this year’s annual report, Your Schools Your Community, conveys our belief that the work we are accomplishing – together with community supporters like you – not only strength-ens and supplements the classroom experiences of PUSD students, but also contributes positively to the development of our entire community.

Beyond the ClassroomImpact on STUDENTS, TEACHERS and Your COMMUNITY

The effects of Pasadena Education Foundation’s [PEF] programs on Pasadena Unified School District [PUSD] schools go far beyond the classroom. The communities of Altadena, Sierra Madre and Pasadena are enriched when our schools are enriched. Everyone, from teachers and students to every community member, benefits when our schools are rich resources of experience and information. For example:

The PEF’s Summer Enrichment Program benefits our community’s young people and it has an equally noteworthy impact on teachers. Consider Kathryn Loury, a long-time teacher at Madison Elementary, who teaches the popular course “Oceans Wet and Wild” that educates children in the preservation of California’s marine life through stories, games, arts and crafts and science experiments. Loury’s passion for ocean education stems from her extensive background in nature conservation. The Summer Enrichment Program provides Loury with the opportunity to share her deep knowledge of ocean conservation. Thus, our entire community benefits from the rich variety of inspiring and enhancing programming.

Students receive extra-curricular instruction and experiences that enrich their choices for their futures. One hundred PUSD teachers and more than 9,000 students participated in the My Masterpieces Arts Integration and the Common Core Institute. In collaboration with PEF, community cultural venues such as the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens collaborated with My Masterpieces and twenty other community arts partners to design a three-day institute for teachers to develop skills in project-based learning and arts integration. Through theater, dance, music and art, teachers discovered new ways of taking teaching and learning beyond the classroom. As one teacher concluded, “Next year I’ll bring objects and concepts to life in my classroom through movement, theater and visual art.” My Masterpieces Director Jennifer Olson stated that community experts were able to “see firsthand how brilliant our teachers are.”

College and Career Pathways are exposing students to previously unimagined college and career opportunities. Students feel better equipped to enter college and have a better understanding of their options and desires upon graduating from high school. They see the connections between their education and life, and have the skills and knowledge to succeed.

The Pasadena Education Foundation is proud of its ability to help students and teachers to reach Beyond the Classroom and further enrich the entire community.

FEATURED PROGRAMS

For more than 40 years, PEF Teacher Grants have provided resources for teachers throughout PUSD to take their creative projects from idea to reality.

The App Academy at Pasadena High School, one of PUSD’s College and Career Pathways, is an innovative four-year high school program where students learn computer science through mobile, web and game development.

The PEF Summer Enrichment Program provides K-12 students exceptional learning opportunities through hands-on exploration with more than 60 unique classes on seven campuses serving 1,300 students.

PUSD•3D is helping to create a new model for teaching innovation in PUSD schools by providing students the opportunity to utilize their creativity and collaboration skills with next-gen technology like 3D printers.

Pasadena’s world-class museums open their doors to every PUSD K-6 student through the integrated arts curriculum in the My Masterpieces: Discovering Art in My Community program that connects over 9,600 students and 350 teachers with the cultural resources of their community.

The PEF Middle School Robotics program engages hundreds of PUSD students each year in exciting hands-on 21st century learning opportunities where students practice and reinforce key concepts in engineering, computer programming, and mathematics, all while strengthening problem solving skills. The pro-gram culminates in an exciting Robotics Competition.

The College and Career Pathways program combines a rigorous college preparatory high school curriculum with strong technical programs of study centered around today’s most relevant industries. The eight hands-on, real-world focused academies bring learning to life, motivating and engaging 1,600 PUSD students by connecting learning in the classroom with real world experience.
